In 1984, I helped tow a ship that was built in 1945 and laid up in 1946, to be sunk as a target off Puerto Rico. In the machine shop there was a large mint condition LeBlond lathe and a smaller Shelden Lathe which I actually disassembled and had for 30 years. The LeBlond went down with the ship, sad.

Good afternoon, could you advise me on the oils used by the lathe. We recently acquired a lathe which in the manual says that the following oils are used. Headstock Oil type mobil DTE Light or Iso 32 but we have Mobil Nuto H32 hydraulic oil, and for the gearbox and apron the manual says to use Mobil Vactra 2 or Iso 68 but we have Shell Tellus S2 M 68. Can they be used?

I don't think they are made in the USA anymore because of the Chinise markings at one of the lubrication selsctors shown in the video. They probably outsource everything except design to China. One of the few ways to stay competitive

Machine levelling is an oxymoron of a term. It's main use is to obtain a geometrically aligned machine tool. a lathe in this case. It does not matter if the machine is not perfectly aligned to the earths gravity, so long as the machine is geometrically aligned (so it turns straight and parallel, etc.). Levelling the machine to get the coolant to flow back is of very much secondary importance, and even if the machine were 1 degree out of parallel to gravity the coolant will still flow ok! The levelling operation can even influence whether the machine spindle points upwards or downwards relative to the longitudinal slideways.

Well the term itself isn't an oxymoron but the gentleman in the video explained that a slight tilt back is desirable for better coolant return to the pump.
