one tip, as the feed gearbox has straight cut gears inside, DON'T change while it's running, thats how you grind the gears, it doesn't have synchromesh like your cars' gearbox!!; INSTEAD turn it by hand, or jog it only, that way things slide in easy, no damage done.

Good afternoon, could you advise me on the oils used by the lathe. We recently acquired a lathe which in the manual says that the following oils are used. Headstock Oil type mobil DTE Light or Iso 32 but we have Mobil Nuto H32 hydraulic oil, and for the gearbox and apron the manual says to use Mobil Vactra 2 or Iso 68 but we have Shell Tellus S2 M 68. Can they be used?

I have a 1970’s Victor 20X40 and it looks like they stole the headstock design from LeBlond. I really appreciate this video though, I’m in the middle of a full bearing replacement of the headstock and was worried about the inner tapered roller bearing seating on the spindle correctly. Thanks

In 1984, I helped tow a ship that was built in 1945 and laid up in 1946, to be sunk as a target off Puerto Rico. In the machine shop there was a large mint condition LeBlond lathe and a smaller Shelden Lathe which I actually disassembled and had for 30 years. The LeBlond went down with the ship, sad.

I don't think they are made in the USA anymore because of the Chinise markings at one of the lubrication selsctors shown in the video. They probably outsource everything except design to China. One of the few ways to stay competitive

Machine levelling is an oxymoron of a term. It's main use is to obtain a geometrically aligned machine tool. a lathe in this case. It does not matter if the machine is not perfectly aligned to the earths gravity, so long as the machine is geometrically aligned (so it turns straight and parallel, etc.). Levelling the machine to get the coolant to flow back is of very much secondary importance, and even if the machine were 1 degree out of parallel to gravity the coolant will still flow ok! The levelling operation can even influence whether the machine spindle points upwards or downwards relative to the longitudinal slideways.
@user-tw9io9nz2m
@user-tw9io9nz2m 3 жыл бұрын
Well the term itself isn't an oxymoron but the gentleman in the video explained that a slight tilt back is desirable for better coolant return to the pump.

@ 2:14 You can very well disengage as long as you use the thread-chasing dial to re-engage at the correct point. It doesn't matter what threads you're working on.
@samtheking14

I think he was just pointing it out for machinists who mainly cut standard threads. Aka me, but honestly I didn’t know that so thank you for that tip if I ever need to cut metric threads and I accidentally disengage my split nut.
@Sigrm
@Sigrm Ай бұрын
@@samtheking14 That may be the case, but there is still no need to make metric sound like something special. It's just another gearing, your lathe doesn't suddenly operate in a different way just because it's metric.

You can disengage half nuts on a metric thread. I did a 1.75mm pitch today and disengaged 2-3 times. I did a few 2.00mm the other day and disengaged about 6 times. Each time the gear train and the tool point married exactly the same as when the half nuts first engaged but the only difference was the mesh of individual teeth on individual gears. But given the fact that a gear is exactly the same on any radial degree, it didn't matter. It takes about 15-20 seconds to begin the pass again once you've mastered the skill.
