What do you think of DE as an internal parasite control/proticol. Some chicken owners swear by it but others say its not enough. I add some to my feed but I worry it won't be enough. What's your experience?

I give my chickens a little boost every few months. I mix honey, garlic, apple cider vinegar, ginger, turmeric mixed with water and add to their feed. Also pumpkin seeds. This helps keep them healthy and parasite free. I actually did my deep clean yesterday and also extended their run as we’ve started to get a fox visiting on a regular basis so now I can’t let them free range like I used to unless I’m in the garden with them. We don’t get many predators here in Belgium, but foxes are the worst!

I do sprouted grains - a home made blend of between 6 to 14 different kinds - that I let grow for about 8 days. At that stage the sprouts are about 4 -5 inches tall. The first thing my chickens would do when I let them out of the coop in the morning is run out and gobble up all the grass they could get their little beaks on. So with the sprouted grains they have much more variety, it keeps them from eating every blade of grass in the run, and the nutrition is more bioavailable (from what I've read). They love it! I only have 6 chickens - 1 light brahma, 2 black australorps, 2 easter eggers, and 1 prairie blue bell egger. About 5 oz of the grain blend yields about 2lbs of sprouts, which is equal to 2% of my flocks full grown weight (they are only 11 weeks right now, so it's a little more than I actually need). They eat a good bit of it. Since not all the seeds germinate in those few days, they get some grains as well. I'm hoping some of the ungerminated seeds will eventually sprout and grow in the run. Of course, as eager as my girls are for fresh greens, I don't hold out a ton of hope! With respect to herbal solutions, I had completely forgotten about oregano. I used it every day for myself! Parsley is good too. Oh! And apple cider vinegar. I need to be giving these to my chickens!

This is my first year with chickens. I got the chicks in March. I can say when I got out to gather eggs and and check on them I dread it only because I’m afraid I will find a sick chicken and not know how to help them properly. I’m terrified of the Winter and having them. We live in VT where the winters can be rough. I just want them to be safe and happy and I see so many chicken owners on FB, Instagram, KZfaq going through so crazy things with their chickens and it makes me second guess if it was a good idea to get them. But I also can’t imagine not having them now. They are so cute and funny. I think I just need the confidence to know I can handle something if it happens I suppose!

Winter time. Feed your chickens more corn. It will fatten them up, and it will give them calories to survive the cold. If you make your own mix double your corn for winter. And by the way you should not wait an entire year to clean you coop. Once a month. Same as egg laying box. That in itself will be better than half of the parasite battle.

But I know it's coming and I have been studying up so I can do what's best for my feathered friends! I'm up for the challenge (I hope). One part of preparing- I've been drying nutritious weeds and wild greens all summer to add to their winter food.

Thank you for the information. Unfortunately we do not have a single vet willing to work with chickens here where I live. (west coast us) I find that ridiculous. There are farm vets here, and they wont either. In June I had a major baby chick emergency. I called frantically to find help...finding none. I saved her little life myself. Hindsight.. keeping a Chicken First aid kit is ideal. I do realize there are some things a first aid kit wont help. But its a start. next week dry weather is coming so the cleanup will begin. Happy Fall Tidings!

I’m in SC and we rarely get any snow. Maybe a dusting every 2-3 years. We have had some serious (for us) snow but it’s mostly serious because we aren’t used to it, no snow tires or chains and very few salt trucks or anything to deal with more than a few inches. When we do manage to get snow, our kiddos have to roll up the entire yard to make one dirty pitiful snowman. 😆

@WelcometoChickenlandia

Yes, that’s definitely part of the reason people do deep litter. But it does need to be cleaned out at least once a year so if someone hasn’t done their yearly clean out by fall, they should do it now and start the process over for the winter months. :)

I plan on doing a very good cleaning here within the next couple of weeks or so. Thankfully my nesting boxes are turf so all I have to do is rinse them and dry them and that’s it. Last year I did straw bales all around the run but this year I may just wrap in tarps because it’s easier. We have dust bath set up but they rarely use it so I’m thinking of doing a base of dust in the whole run next year. I don’t think I’m going to do deep liter this winter.

I would use them crushed instead. It will be easier for them to eat and it should be in a separate bowl from their feed. :)

I did soil, sand and DE in the dust bath. I did everything I was supposed to do and had a hen die from northern fowl mites. Never had that problem in TN. Do you have that problem there?
@WelcometoChickenlandia
@WelcometoChickenlandia Жыл бұрын
Ugh I’m so sorry. We do have those up here but they aren’t as common as lice. The dust baths help to control infestations but they are not a guarantee. If she died it’s very likely she actually had an underlying issue going on. I’m so sorry!

They are Juniper! But they were stupid expensive haha (I didn’t realize how much they were until I was at the checkout lol). They were grafted onto the trunks so they don’t actually grow like that naturally.

do you have a video on tips for integrating flocks? I went crazy getting different breeds over this summer. I have 10 Delaware I got in March, 3 barred rock I got in May and 4 lavender Orpington I got in July. in the summer I housed them separately, but only one coop is ok for the rainy season but the barred rocks are kinda aggressive. the Delaware can stand up for themselves, but the orps are still pretty young. ideas? suggestions? ps. I love your channel and think you are absolutely wonderful. I also agree that winter is not our best season. I also have no idea how anyone lives with snow. can you imagine shoveling a car out before work?!!? or driving on ice?!!? yea, no!

I have three hens and I had to go away for work trip to San Diego my brother watched them they were fine everything was fine when I came back and this was in the middle of September when I came back I haven’t got the most consistent eggs from one of my chickens and now I haven’t had an egg from her I think in about nine days there doesn’t seem to be any issue my other hens are laying fine I’ve looked her over she’s eating acting normal I’ve heard in Florida that chickens don’t slow down or stop laying eggs because of the shorter days but could that be what’s causing it? Do different breeds actually have more effect from the shorter days over other breeds? I will add that she is my most inconsistent layer to begin with I usually get less production from her than the other hens.

I'm in suburbia FAR from any woods, and things keep killing all my chickens. All of them. 20 so far, and they're ALWAYS enclosed in coops and pens. I've had raccoons use their furry hands and let themselves right in, rip them apart. I do not understand wtf is happening, I'm keeping mine inside this winter until I can fix this issue.

HI sweet kindred chicken lady....I see you use netting across the top of your coop. What kind of netting is this please? Do wild birds get caught in the netting? This is my worst fear from closing in our coop. Blessings...

I can’t find the netting I have but I found another brand that seems pretty much the same. There’s a link to it in the description! I haven’t had any birds get caught in this type of netting, but that doesn’t mean it won’t ever happen. I’m afraid of that as well! Mine is 1” and pulled very taught, which helps a ton. :)

i need advice. the vet quoted $45. to see her. i cant see that its a chicken. i got a group (5) of chickens added to my flock and seemed to go well but today i saw one curdled up in the corner of the yard. when i got it i found it was pecked so badly that there is a maybe 1 by 2 inch opening on the head.i mean i can see the bone of the skull (nasty). i sprayed w antiseptic but i cant even stitch it back its to large. idk w to do and i dont want it to suffer. is it better to make some soup or can it recover? i got her in a cage right now so no more damage from the bullies.

What kind of toys are you using? Have you tried hanging a cabbage up for them? How about some dust baths? Maybe they already have enough enrichment in their natural environment and so they are uninterested in the toys!
