Journey to the Chateau

Journey to the Chateau

Жыл бұрын

In this week's episode, Patrick and Stuart welcome Vincent from the Little Greene Paint and Paper Company. Vincent is the color trainer/consultant for Little Greene Company in Paris, and he offers some advice to Patrick and Stuart on things that they should consider when selecting paint colors and wallpapers for the chateau.
This is not a paid collaboration. Patrick and Stuart have been using Little Greene products since first arriving at the chateau because of the exceptional quality. They reached out to the Little Greene Company for a consultation because of the company's knowledge and experience with historical paints and National Trust wallpapers.
/ littlegreene.fr
Earlier this year, Vincent had also made a trip to visit Stephen and Sara at the Château de Saint Germain des Prés on their KZfaq channel ‪@ManorandMaker‬.
Join Patrick and Stuart on their journey to find a neglected, forgotten, or crumbling château or castle in France, and then continue to follow them as they work on its restoration, rénovation, decoration, and furnishing. Along the way, they will also create and share videos on their preparation for having gîtes for guests, and an event venue in their chateau (wedding, birthday, anniversary, organization or club meetings, retreats, etc.).

Vincent is an amazing representative of a paint company. He was very tactful but did show how colours papers furnishings and decorations can change through the centuries but that one is actually living in this century with a personal lifestyle that has to be comfortable in the environment that one creates. It can reflect the age of the chateau but not absolutely copy it. I am glad Patrick and Stuart have found such a perceptive and knowledgeable person to guide them in making a gorgeous room which they can share with very many friends and fill it with laughter.

I immediately watched this a second time. I think the advice is this: 1. Decide the function of the room. 2. Decide the style of the furnishings. 3. Then choose a wall treatment that harmonizes with the furniture. Very useful guidance!

Aloha, thank you for sharing Vincent’s brilliance. I’m almost at a loss of words. I adore interior decorating and creating. It’s been my passion since childhood whether it’s my bedroom or my dollhouse. In my life’s travels, I never travel light even when on the road as an entertainer, or just temporarily staying somewhere, I always HAD to decorate my hotel or motel or whatever room I was given, to make me feel comfortable and at home. I have to make it mine, a statement of me, who I am, even if no one else sees it - I see it. I would even pack different colored light bulbs and nite lites for a more pleasant decor.Vincent said and tactfully explained it all. At least now I don’t feel like I’m the only one who feels this way. Everything has a place and a place for everything and there’s a theme and congrunuity to it all. Does that make sense? I will watch this video again and again and try to soak in as much in as possible. Once again, your fantastic video made me feel like I was back in France. I adore Vincent’s vocabulary and accent, he says and expresses it all tres magnifique!

What a great visit with Vincent!!! He was really good at describing the various things that go into picking colors for walls and ceilings, including elements I hadn’t thought of. Thanks so much for sharing the conversation. ♥️ I look forward to seeing the progress on the other rooms when you’re ready to share them. I’m sure you’re taking a few before and during photos for yourselves, and maybe can include a few in the progress videos. Oh dear, an aubergine ceiling in your mid century modern home!!! One cries out, “Whyyyyyyy?!!!!” We recently had an opportunity to see photos of an 1860’s Victorian our family had lovingly restored when I was in high school. I wish I’d never looked to see what they did to our beautiful house, with wood hand-picked by the sawyer who built it (he picked out the individual trees as they came through the mill for elements of the house). Why in the 1990’s would you rip out some to install a hideous 1970’s fireplace. 🤦‍♀️😭 Lesson learned - don’t look back!!!

Vincent has such a great personality and knows color, and style, but he seems to also be great with people to guide you in a direction you’re happy with. Love your wallpaper design Stuart. When I was in college, a wallpaper company hired me as a freelance wallpaper designer. I learned a lot and it was fun to see my designs become rolls of wallpaper. All of your projects sound wonderful but take time. You don’t have a crew of people working with you so filming and working is just too time consuming I imagine. Hard to do both. So, when you are ready and able to show us a glimpse we’ll be watching. Man hugs. xx

Thank you both for allowing me to live vicariously through you! This was/is my dream to restore historic homes. I love the investigation into the original use and decoration of rooms and integrating those factors into current use. I have the utmost admiration for owners who decorate with respect for the past. Owners certainly have the right to do with their spaces as they like, but the “journey” to the historic decoration and design is much more fun. I appreciate that you have taken me on this journey. I’m sad that viewers feel entitled to dictate your content. This is already an overwhelming undertaking before the full time job of content creating. Then let’s think about the cost of such renovations, multiplied by the number of rooms in each building. BTW, I’m still available to volunteer to work/labor for the experience of participating in said renovation/decorating of said rooms😂😂😂.💗💗💗

Oh yes! This man is a pro! I always thought a mural should go on the ceiling. Even just a simple “sky/clouds” mural would be so pretty. No “chateau restoration” channel I follow is doing this. Back in the day, the ceiling was always decorated and we really have moved away from that. Although, I heard a designer recently say “consider the ceiling the 5th wall in any room”. I look so forward to see this room come together. The two of you have such good taste, I’m sure it will be stunning.

Hello darling Stuart and Patrick . Vincent definite has a wealth of knowledge about decor and furnishings. It was very interesting the way he talks about the different periods and explained about how the style of chairs changed from Louis 15th to the 16th due to the fashion of the ladies crinoline dresses. At the end of the day it is your home and it’s about suiting your needs and the purpose of each room. I also think you have achieved so many projects in the short time you have been there and have the right balance of priorities what projects need to be done first. I think Stuart’s wallpaper that he has designed is just beautiful and very fitting for a bedroom . Thank you both again for a very interesting vlog. Xx🇨🇮

Bonjour Patrick and Stuart, my house, ONLY turned 100 this year. The paint is not 100, but I have been here thirteen years, I loved the color in some rooms and changed the ones I didn't. I am so ready to paint, and Vincent has great ideas, and they make perfect sense. Looking beyond just a color you like, but the purpose of the color to the rooms function is amazing. I didn't care for wallpaper, but watching the Chateau channels, you all have opened my eyes to the beauty of it, (in my defense do the 70's ring a bell) Vincent has great ideas, I can't wait to see how you use them and the "finished" room, (lol) I have no doubt, it will be fantastic when you're finished. P.S. no white. Thanks guys loved the video. Love from N.Y.

Oh what a great vlog!!! Vincent explained the process of decorating so well: decide on the function and mood you want a room to convey, then furniture elements and the room colour and decor complements. Even though you both are artists and designers in your own right, your willingness to be open to his suggestions and guidance is going to make your collaboration with Vincent amazing!!! Can't wait.❤

What Vincent is saying is essential to decorating any period house. He explains it very well. And it's true what he explains about white, there was a period in Scandinavia in the beginning of the 1900s when most historic furniture was painted white, windows, mouldings, walls even. It was of course a reaction, a swing of the pendulum after the dark velvet brown and dark greens, flocked wallpaper of the mid to late 1800s. The pendulum swings, the philosophy and ideals of aesthetics change, but in previous eras, one often kept all the inherited furniture and repainted, reupholstered. The ambition of a look or impression of a room is key. If it's really important to give the interior architecture a feel of "it was always this way" or if one prefers to be somewhat in tune with the overall style of a given period, there's a huge difference between these two. Add the contemporary functions of the room, plus whatever is already in the room one wants to keep there, and you have three aspects to meld together. The old classic "House & Garden" traditional approach is to start with the carpet. Why? Bc finding the right dimensioned carpet you like is the hardest and one of the biggest investments (usually, at least if you use oriental handknotted ones, whether at auction, inherited or brand new). And if you use more than one the carpets signify zones in the space, for instance, one under a grand piano at one end of a room, another large enough to fit your sitting arrangement in front of a fireplace etc. So traditionally you'd start with the carpet(s) which in itself then limits the color palette. You want colors that will match or instead compliment those of your carpet (preferably both within a room) and any color present on the floor considered as well. Colors are always available in thousands of shades, carpets that are right for your space are not. This is a traditional English approach, and then just like Vincent says, you start to collect fabric swatches of different colors and different scaled prints, being careful not to match them too much (or it will all look like a coordinated "set" not the natural layers over time that makes a room dynamic, interesting and inviting). I'd say it's this "art of layering" that really gives warmth to an interior, more than the actual dominant colors. Even a very modern interior with cool shades can have a warm and soulful feel if there's a conversation going on between prints, hues, textures and it doesn't look too planned or matchy matchy. Or it can feel like you walked into a public space or hotel that just opened, a finshed literal concept and ice cold, no matter if its all in warm reds and browns or all from the correct date. You don't have to start with a carpet imo, you may be happy with a very neutral one you can find later, or a bohemian mix of smaller ones or none at all. So starting with a piece of art you really love and want to play a role in the room is just as fine, or if you bought a sofa with fabric you absolutely love, the point is starting with that one piece that provides a palette, then collecting accents, coordinates and compliments (opposite side of the color wheel) to create a whole. That bit about not understanding when you enter a room is true. That can quite easily be remedied sometimes with a print or color that ties things together, worse to me, is when you immediately understand what they were going for, but they messed it up with overdoing it, over matching, too many statements, too many dominant colors competing or an overall lack of guts to make choices of any substance (being too careful with too subtle colors everywhere can look more chaotic and "brocanty" with no anchor). Anyway, if you like the idea of a sky ceiling, there's alot of ceiling papers available these days. And I don't mean literal reproductions of 18th century frescos which tend to look super - kitch, but well balanced papers for ceilings that provide a little dimension and hue of color. If not for the grand salon, perhaps for a bedroom where one spends time looking up. If you set your VPN to different countries googling will show quite different results. Also, just chosing a light blue could give that effect without being too literal. One thing Vincent didn't talk about was lighting. To me, the type of interior lighting you will use in a space when activated, and the directions from which the room recieves natural light has a HUGE impact on color choices for walls, wainscotting and ceiling. In our hemisphere northfacing windows provide light that brings out the blue tones in any color. So a pink will look more magenta, a yellow lean more towards green, a white will have a blue or violet tint, a blue will be quite brilliant with more depth, and a celadon might look turquoise. A southern facing room with have warm spectrum light, bringing out the yellows and reds of any color. East is morning light, west is evening light, and the color of a breakfast room would look very different if it was west facing instead of east facing. Ceiling colors jobs are to reflect light. It bounces off it, and that hue is reflected around the room. Un ciel bleu is lovely, but you'd want to consider the walls and furnishings under that blue tinge of light. Ie lovely for a yellow ochre and gold room (opposite side of the wheel) but if you chose green walls you need to take into account the color will lean cooler, just like in the nothern light, and you might want to go earthier green or yellower green to balance it out. The same with any color thats not a direct complimentary one on the opposite side of the wheel. Greys are tricky bc they can lean in all different directions. Getting a grey right is probably the hardest, at least in my experience. Similar to whites you get either greenish, violet or bluish shades in the shadows. And the direction the light comes from has the most influence on these. To me, the hue of any color is therefore more important than the color itself. Because Aqua greens, eau de nils, turquoises can be beautiful, but make a bright room feel like it's under water, and make guests skin look quite sickly if illuminated. An apricot tone can be super pretty on the wall but also make people in it look dreadfully pale, it's too close to "flesh tint" only brighter. When it comes to social spaces, I always think it's a splendid idea to consider what makes your guests look their best. For a dining room specifically, I like a color that makes the ladies skin look healthy, the food appetizing, and jewels glimmer in the candle light. It's appreciated even though people may not know it's the color boosting this. So that's also something to consider in a room for vibrant social settings. The colors will frame not only your interiors but your guests, much like the background of a portrait or the passe partout of a watercolor. For a grand salon I'd avoid beiges, greens that lean too minty or towards lime, darker greys, browns, dark earth tones and inky hues that absorb too much light instead of sending it back to bounce around in merriment. They tend to be too cloying and depressive for candle light to be festive and make people look old and pale. But can be great for small spaces to relax in silence especially complimented with gold, copper, and pops of bright color. One last thought: When it comes to colors, personal concepts can be just as great as chosing a dominant. Such a concept might be "jewel tones". Meaning a family of hues in different colors, that still feel cohesive and put together, without being repetetive. Jewel tones would mean exactly what it sounds like, amber with deep violet works, if paired with fuchsia, saffire and emerald green. Nice with a dark neutral trim or cooler metallic. Another concept could be "spingtime in Provence". Warm earthy yellows, lavenders, bright sap and dark greens, cobalt blues and soft rose hues all work beautifully together like in so many paintings made in the region by all the masters. A third might be "Imari porcelain". A style of Japanese porcelaine that took it's colorway from Persian influence, and pairs fantastically (of course) with Persian carpets. Deep china blue with light corals and rusty iron reds, very light greys, floral patterns and gold accents. Nice combined with a stripe somewhere to give some definition. Quite handsome and never too girly. I like to think in terms of concepts if starting out without a definate dominant feature of a room. There are as many as you can envision, the question might be what do you love collecting, or looking at, or what specific memory of a place makes you happy? I'm not big on "feature rooms" that too literally present a concept (like a faux moroccan or Japanese rooms) but find concepts great to use for coordinating different colors and patterns. My two cents in way too many words lol 😂 I'm exited to see your progress! ❤

WOW, I love your comment. Indeed, I agree with what you said. I think you will like our choices. It is not a themed room. It is 18th century paper, elegant and some strong colours to set it off. But not too many. Our furniture is 18th century. Great start. My guess is that when we are finished, you’d have done some things differently for you but you will like what we did. @@patrickjourneytothechateau9452 I'm sorry I'm so wordy 😂. I've very confident in your choices, but it is really cool you took Vincent in to consult with, he seems like a very pleasant guy with lots of knowledge up his sleeve and a sound approach. Like he said, what's more important than anything is YOU love your space and feel it affects your senses the way you want it too. Also, a nice room is always a sortof ongoing process, evolving over time, and that only adds to the dynamics and feeling of a home. With all your great auction and brocante finds the room will be fabulous with some fresh paper on the walls and some coordinating fabrics, a few plants, books and pieces for guests to investigate. Also, seasonal decor brings alot to any social setting and you guys do that beautifully. The running dog moulding in gold turned out so nice with the chandelier. Trims and borders are really quite effective ways to make a big impact, and often overlooked these days in favour of more obvious statements. You both do details beautifully. You have both the keen eye and the crafty skills, which is so inspiring to see! Such fantastic things to share with a partner! 💝

So many decisions to make! Vincent was so right when he said it is your chateau and you have to make the decisions that suit your life and not have ones imposed on you that you are uncomfortable with. Don't try to please everyone as in attempting to do that you please noone, especially Stuart and Patrick! Everything is also expensive from paints to wallpapers to fabrics for upholstering furniture and making curtains! Slowly is a very good idea as to make the wrong decisions for you will make you unsettled and unhappy. Best always, David

I really love Vincent. I saw him with Steve and Sarah. He really knows and more importantly is very passionate about colour! I love love the Little Green Products, I wish they were available in Australia. I've been drooling over them for years in the The Country Living Magazine (UK edition) that I buy. It's funny when I first used to buy it was $5.95 which compared to the $2 and under for most of the other magazines available at the time, very expensive. But I used to pore (and still do) over every page, every ad. And I keep them. I have boxes and boxes of them. They are now $12.95AUD and the only magazine I still buy in hard copy. 3 of the magazine I started buying when I was 12 (Cleo, Cosmopolitan and Dolly) they no longer exist in hard copy. So sad, as sign of the digital times. Although, I am on my 4th kindle, I still buy my favourite books in book format and I really prefer a magazine rather than its digital form, but I guess I am in the minority there. I get a bit distressed on your behalf when I hear you justifying yourselves and your process. Bugger them. This is your home, your vlog and you do you. Which you are both doing very well I might add. Personally, I find endless vlogs on sanding floors and replastering walls boring. I would rather see a 2 second bit on that bit. Can't wait to see the end result of all your hard work behind the scenes. Keep it up xx

I am fascinated by people with an eye for design. I, unfortunately, am not one of those lucky ones but I respect their views. I liked how he always made sure that you knew it was your home and your choices on what you would like. I think some designers just want every home to look the same or how they envision it and don't think about the people who live there.

What caught my attention was Vincent pointing out that we always paint our ceilings white, but I remember as a child, many decades ago, our ceilings were light colours. We always had wallpaper and it reflected my mother. The wallpaper in my bedroom now, makes me think of my mother, my tastes are not my mother's. It was already here when we bought the house 11 or 12 yrs ago. Having the ceiling reflecting the over all colours chosen for the room almost makes me want to tell my husband, the bathroom, lets use that darker blue on the ceiling, which we painted white of course. I love listening to your deliberations, the why of your choices of this item or that colour. It does make me rethink about our choice of decorations.

Hi Patrick & Stuart, I really enjoyed seeing Vincent from Little Greene Paint and Paper Company at the Chateau explaining the process of selecting paint, wallpaper, fabric, and decor for the Grand Salon and the Petit Salon. I hung on to every word and will share this vlog with my partner/husband when he returns from an out-of-town event this week. I agree with his explanation of the selections but in our case, we have furniture that dates from 1810 through 1920. It's a collection of a bit of this and a bit of that. While the house is a mid-century modern ranch, only a few accessories, so far, are actually from the period of the house. The mix of styles is a bit of Asian, French Louis XIV and Louis XVI, well-designed Philadelphia Chippendale DR chairs (18), and a 16" Victorian Renaissance DR table. The room will eventually be rebuilt due to structural changes that need to be done to a flat roof in New England. I present it all as I am the custodian of furnishings passed down through the family from various relatives over the years. The truth is, the oak and walnut Victorian Furnishings from my Queen Ann Victorian are really fighting it out with the 1950 Mid century modern ranch, hence the need to enlarge and update. I hope I can go on with this as much as I am now when we premier our vlog about the restoration and modernization starting sooner than later I hope. I can't wait to see the continued progress you both make on your Chateau in future vlogs. I'll be sure to be there watching and noting every detail. Mark & Scott

Greetings Mark and Scott. Your house sounds a little bit like our Woodstock, IL home. Mid century and we couldn’t commit to that period furniture….. I’m not a huge fan. So we lived with the mix and we found many examples of wealthy people who mixed styles in the 1950s too……. I think I needed that excuse. 😂😂😂 Can’t wait to see watch your journey on KZfaq. That will be fun. It is always great to see other people work had. 🤣👍🏻🤣. Vincent’s input was fantastic. It can be applied to any period. He is a gem. Heartfelt thanks to you both. Hugs from Colombe ❤

I am so glad that you will use at least one of Stuart's toile designs. Magnifique! Also, I really like that yellow or gold with the white scrolls. I hope you stay with blue for the dining room or one of the other main downstairs rooms such as the grand salon or the entry. I remember that you spoke of French grey and I am not sure if that shade is like a Dior grey, but a dove grey at the Chateau de Colombe of course fits perfectly! With regard to the ceiling of the grand salon, it will be good to have a contrast with the white and gold ceiling medallion but I can see why Patrick was saying white because my painter/paper-hanger said to always make the ceiling white. Otherwise, he sniffed, it look tacky. (He was Spanish). Although he worked on historic 19th century homes, mine was not one of them, nor was it an 18th century chateau! In my virtual reality decorating games, I still make the ceilings white because of what he said! Please do put gold lines on the paneling, doors, etc.

Good to have some guidance. It can become overwhelming sometimes. I guess the color I see in one of your main rooms is that famous seafoam green with pale beige with white and gold trim. With many mirrors of course. But then there are so many colors to choose from. Bedrooms look good with dramatic wallpaper. Crowns above the bed or four poster beds. Extravagant trims on some drapes, and lots of fringe trims everywhere.

Love this topic - right up my alley. Definitely colour selection needs to be a long term love, that brings you comfort. I love 18th century warm colors in a deep buttery gold, raspberry/burgundy with a dark undertone and forest greens, all which can be supported with white or off white trims, ceilings edged in gold. Earthy colours can be combined with this pallet as well. That pallet can be used in every room, on their own, or mixed for a fun and joyful feel. When using the pallet in each room in a different manner brings a cohesiveness to your environment. It sets a tone of class and elegance in my opinion. These colours can be used in lighter or darker hues, depending on the use of the room and how you want it to feel. The hue should be paired with the colour of furniture, so they enhance one another. If the furniture is light in colour you may want the hue of the walls also to be light to keep the room bright - or make them opposites. If you have dark furniture you may want a brighter hue to lighten the room or a darker hue to set a calm tone of the room. Anyway - LOL I could go on forever. I can't wait to see what you do!

Congratulations on your great choice to consult on colors and combinations. I come from a family of interior designers and will admit I've been jarred by choices I've seen by inexperienced people - though I must admit I often play it too safe. I own a beautiful, large impressionist painting and sought help with a wallpaper choice that wouldn't compete. It was an utter failure that has completely killed my enthusiasm for decorating for two decades. Perhaps your successes will reinspire me.

Beautiful wallpapers. My favourite is the green on yellow, fifth from the left. Reminds me of an antique tub chair I had as a child. It was a Louis 15th tub chair with gold brocade striped fabric, to which someone in the 19th century had added casters, to aid an invalid relative. The rear/outside panel had been replaced with Victorian Jacquard fabric that looked exactly like that wall paper. I loved that chair. @@patrickjourneytothechateau9452 I liked those as well. The only one I wasn't really keen on was the one directly to the right of the bust as we the viewers were looking.

I love that yellow wallpaper sample on your mantle! With cream trim...it would be beautiful. I also really like taupe (not gray or tan) walls with white, off white or cream trim. Those are the predominant colors of my walls. I painted them those colors over 15 yrs ago and still love them. You can bring in many different fabrics (drapes, upholstery and rugs) and they look very compatible. I've painted walls the latest "IN" color before and tired of it quickly.

Oooooo, sky ceiling sounds nice. Stuart, your wallpaper design is beautiful. You two are so talented! As for nothing to show, you guys have done more in a year than many and accomplished lots! Never doubt the amount of work you have done.

I can’t imagine deciding colors ,choosing wallpaper & fabric for a chateau . I have trouble deciding the color for my kitchen. You guys will do a great job deciding the style & choosing colors. Go with your heart 😊.

It is a monumental task….. especially since we will do all the prep work, paining and wallpapering. 😮😂😮. It will take a bit of time. But we are determined to advance and improve this chateau. We will listen to the heart. Thank you so much. Hugs from Colombe. ❤❤❤

Wow! It's a good thing you guys got some guidance on planning ahead for walls and ceiling color. It's so overwhelming all of the things that need to be taken into consideration. There are tons of things you two can do and do very well, bringing Vincent into the equation was a very very wise decision. It sounds like he has broaden you vision as to what you can accomplish with "your" chateau. How exiting. Sorry I was a bit distracted by that beautiful face outside the window. Stay well, hugs to all.
