How do you prevent undercut on a 6g pipe welding with 7018. Im having a super hard time with on my last cover pass on the top side of the weld. Especially from like 3 to 9 oclock

Make sure it's cooled off, or slow down a little.

When I was in school it was a speed issue with me. Make sure you are paying attention to the top of the puddle and remember how much heat you are putting in the higher you get on the pipe.

A very important issue when welding and you addressed it well. I don't want to be Debbie downer, but when it comes to showing the actual arc in motion, Bob Moffitt had the best videos. They focused in on the actual puddle without a lot of flash and flare.

Need an answer asap I just bought “Tweco electrode holder 500 amp”, and this thing is kinda more huge than I expected. I stick weld at delmar college and my other electrode holder is 250 amp but bought a new one because jt sucks at holding rods. Anyways I just need your word if it’s meant for different amperage’s and not low ones like 200-300 amp. Because it was atleast $80 and feel like I kind of wasted money. It looks like it would be perfect for 1/8th rods and even bigger but if you can tell me that it can be used just like my 200amp electrode holder as well I’ll greatly appreciate it.

Bryan, Typically a downhand weld is less prone to undercut as the mechanics of the weld are changed physically. Traveling with gravity vs against it defiantly helps reduce undercut. There are a few take-aways that I think need to be considered when attempting to repair undercut with a downward weld. First and foremost, is the code you're welding to allow a downhanded procedure? Has it been qualified? Most procedures and qualifications specify the position and the direction of travel. I think this should be in the forefront of your thought process. If its allowed it can be a quick fix. Unfortunately, more often than not, its not allowed. I would hate for a guy to get in trouble because a good weld wasn't repaired correctly! I would direct this question to your QCM or shop Forman for an answer according to what your specific application is.

Downhill welding isn't recommended unless you are laying in a root pass with 6010 on pipe or fabricating some thin material. Welding procedures call for uphill travel

What advice can you give with spray arc? Multipass tee joints. You can't do manipulations. I think in sine situations gun angles go out the door its really about watching the puddle because gun angle will have to be adjusted. I think overheating can also cause a lot of the undercut. The last bead on top is always the hardest weld because its always the riskiest pass if the conditions aren't correct.

In my experience with spray transfer, letting the metal cool after a couple passes really helps with undercut. And a little manipulation can be done with spray transfer, just have to be quick with it. Can't rush spray cause of the intense heat transfer. Cooling is the main thing in spray transfer to prevent undercut.

Where I work, we weld a lot of 1"- 4" plate and use spray transfer (typically 28.5-29.5V 300-325A with 98/2 gas and .045 wire) I'm getting undercut, but I don't want to dial my heat down too much. Am I going to have to dial down or is there a technique I could try to prevent this? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Also if you are curious about the metal thickness, it is because we do testing on high pressure steam systems 2000+ psig with piping and valves up to 28" sch 160 GR-C. No I don't weld the pipe, we have real nuclear certified welders for that. I just build the stands and fixtures. I would like to get Nuke certs one day though but right now my skills are not up to par for that.

Does it make any difference whether you are pushing the weld puddle instead of trailing it? I push most of my welds to pre-heat the parent metal.
@AlexA121890
@AlexA121890 2 жыл бұрын
With mig the difference of push vs pull is negligible. I prefer to push so i can see the puddle and travel direction better. Only time i push with smaw is uphill in the 3rd position.

A beginner welder should not learn to weld with any manipulation or weaving techniques with mcaw aka mig specially in fillet welds. You should only weave or use any manipulation if filling gaps or welding vertically. Otherwise it's like buttering bread and you will lack penetration into the wild joint. To many of these welders on KZfaq teach this practice but it's improper and is why so many fail tests. It is also a safety hazard depending on what you're welding. If it's structural and that weld breaks people can get injured. The moment I see videos teaching this process outside of filling gaps or vertical welds I stop the video instantly.

Great advice bud, me working a shipyard....Not one single bit advice here is going to help or save me....sigh. Sorry for the half jokes I have to tell others in classes that the prep and material even the booths don't exist out here. You're going to get rust paint piss and shit where you have to weld and that's if you will either see it without a tiny flash light and a mirror in spot that you might only get your hand in.
