Haha, I remember how I learned how to weld. At my old job, my boss was an old man...nice guy but he sucked ass at welding...looked like a line of chewing gum stuck in the joint. I never took any classes or anything, I just started messing with the machine after work and just practicing. The bosses son was the foreman there and he told me just do what it takes so the ol man won't ruin welds that we gotta look at. After a few weeks, I got pretty good then told the ol man let me have a crack at it. He about shit himself when I made a nearly perfect stack of dimes for a weld and just handed the stinger to me and said...this is your job now. And honestly, I suck at welding but for the purposes of what we were doing, it was fine. Now against this guy I'd look like a total choad. But that's ok, I never claimed to be great, I just like watching metal melt in a hot electric arc.

Amir Patel keep practicing, and burning rods. Everybody has that problem. You will eventually find the technique so scratching the rod against the plate that gets the arc started for you. This guy, and a handful of others on KZfaq are good welding instructors, and you can learn a lot from them. But you will learn the most doing exactly what they are telling you and just keep burning rod until it comes naturally.

I like how you sweet talk your rod to get her going. I'm pretty much the exact opposite. I find if I insult it, the sumbitch runs perfect every time. On the dangers of chipping hot slag...just the other day, I was welding in a tight inside corner, got to the end, WITH MY HOOD DOWN...I whacked the end of the bead to see if I filled the crater at the end enough....last weld of the day...dadgum chunk of slag made its way inside my hood and stuck to my top eye lid...it felt awesome. A little pain never hurt anyone.

Thank you for creating this video!! I’m in my second month of my first year of welding at school. This has been my biggest challenge so far- just running straight beads without using another plate to guide me! I have to admit it was encouraging to see even you, a professional, stick a rod haha.

I was taught how to weld by a fab shop foreman. I ran into a problem once and asked him for help diagnosing my issue. His response was, "walk me through your troubleshooting process". At that moment, i realized all welders experience problems and they learn how to work through them.

I have an antique Marquette Redi Arc 180 amp AC welder that was made in the 50s or 60s and it runs great I must say I only normally run 6013 and 7018ac sticks and after watching this video you make me want to go by every kind of Rod and start practicing with the ones that are not so good at I like 6013 and 7018 because they are easy to weld with when I'm welding Rifle and Pistol bullet traps together and general farm equipment maintenance I haven't really ever had a need to use the other electrodes at least I don't think I have I'm not a pro I just do it for a hobby and I used to work on a farm and I maintenance the tractors and the Box blades and all the attachments that the old farmer I worked for had and my first year there I spent probably a quarter that time welding and repairing a lot of the old pieces of equipment that he had that had a lot of Broken welds on them and a lot of cracked welds as well I'll never forget him he thanked me so many times for that because he was taking all this stuff to a Pro welder that was charging him insane prices or at least that's what I thought for even really simple welds like I said I'm not a pro I've just been doing it for a hobby for almost 15 years and overtime I've acquired an antique Eutectic 225 AC stick welder, and then I went and picked up a flux core welder just a cheapo from Harbor Freight what's actually turns out to be a decent welder in the right hands, I just pick that up to weld the exhaust pipe on my pickup, recently I just picked up an antique Marquette Redi Arc 180 amp AC welder and for being made between the fifties and sixties 60s that thing runs remarkably well, I had to make my own leads for it, but only paid $65 for the welder and it lays down some damn good beads and I'm sure a lot of the pro welders that do it professionally would probably laugh at the dinosaur machines that I got but they both run extremely well and I paid 65 for 1 and Eutectic I picked up for 25 bucks at a garage sale and that one has definitely paid for itself probably a thousand times by now lol

I've been watching these videos here from Sweden with a delight! Thank you for making the content public. I'd like to see more "garagewelding" for us diy. Stickwelding that is :) Also more welding with smaller more portable models and some words on how this affects the approach. One application for instance is thinn wall round tubing (construction steel) lying flat on a hardox 400 steel plate. Sort of like a diy hinge mechanism type of situation. How to controll slagg and how to make sure you mix well with the host materials when one is thinnwalled and the other very thick. Also tip regarding hardfacing on the edge on 8 mm steel plates and on the face of similar steel steel. What to think about and how it affects the steel you're welding. Fast, slow and moderate cooling and the effects on the host and electrode materials. Also I'd like you to talk some about how vibrations and different types of bending affects the weld. End-craters, convex and concave form of a weld on 90 degree angles for instance. Very basic information but stuff that highly affect (at i guess so) how a skilled welder approaches a problem compared to me (a novice). As you can see im a happy novice with almost no knowledge but if these videos could close some gaps between licens welder audience and novice i think you'll find a bigger target area of viewers :)

Here is a tip, that is more important than any other: always wear a respirator when welding, and have good extraction. Make this your top priority......welding can seriously damage your lungs, if you don,t protect them. Also, when using a hand grinder, always protect your lungs as well. Even if it did not kill you: it could give you chest infections, bronchitis, and new pneumonia. Make this tip: your number one priority: If you intend to weld long term.
