Welfare is supposed to be for poor people -- but BILLIONS go to rich people (bailouts, subsidies, taxpayer-funded special grants).

----
Rich people got lots of extra money recently from government "relief" efforts. In the "Heroes Act", Congress sent $350 million to the 50 RICHEST zip codes in America.
"They didn't have to prove anything," Lisa Conyers, author of "Welfare for the Rich," tells me. Researching her book, she "ended up traveling around the country for four years ... looking at state budgets and federal budgets."
She highlights how taxpayers help billionaires build fancy stadiums.
Taxpayers funded one for billionaire Zygi Wilf, owner of the Minnesota Vikings.
"Here's this person who has all this money, that could perfectly well build his own stadium, asking the taxpayers ... to build a stadium."
Anyone who's stayed in a Nevada hotel also paid an extra $1.50/night to raise almost a billion dollars for a stadium for Raiders' owner Mark Davis.
Davis demanded fancy features, like a movable field and a giant torch.
He says "I’m not a billionaire", but he and his mom own 47% of the team, which worth $3.1 billion.
Did he really need taxpayer help?
That's the just beginning of how taxpayers help the rich.
The video above shows we also, outrageously, pay wealthy communities, rich farmers, energy executives, and big corporations.

@Seth it's too late the government has already brainwashed the majority of the country. Every time I read about things like all of the money that goes to help the homeless but how 60% of the billions get eaten up with consultants and lawyers I just want to scream or how when the student loan issue gets brought up it's rarely talked about how a lot of these colleges are sitting on billions of dollars of endowments and how the government is enabling the high price of college. Most people are just conditioned to see the title of these "feel good programs" but don't go beyond the title to see that most of the government programs are just money sucks for wealthy donors and government cronies.

It has zero effect on gas prices. Know what does affect gas prices? a winter freeze in a huge gas producing state like Texas because they were not prepared for a once in a lifetime storm (which happed before ten years ago, and nothing was done). I also now understand where all the millions and billions that the Bill and Melinda gates and Berkshire Hathaway give to PHILANTHROPY for the needy communities is never seen at those communities or any improvement in any of them... the money is really not going to poor communities.... is going back to their pockets and the pockets of their rich friends in some disgusting form....just like with those huge nonprofit organizations all over the world... i saw a documentary.... It is a lucrative business so they never really help them be completely independent because if the did and the poor advanced and made $$$$ then the NGO’s would lose the clients in those countries and would lose funding that is mostly used for the salaries and bonuses of their executives.... it was disgusting watching that documentary... after that nothing surprises me when it comes up about how corrupt the government and corporations and Nonprofit Org truly are..... there is so much corruption EVERYWHERE!!! Even at churches all across the nation... using God to get richer and richer out of the money of their poor parishioners.... who genuinely are in need.... and deserve $$$$ help but instead they give in faith... and wait and wait and wait for their big reward while the pastor or church leader or the pope and bishops spend it all on unspeakable things.... end of rant....

I was born and raised in Indianapolis, I believe building our football stadium is what built our downtown to what it is now. We built the 1st stadium before we even had a team. So the stadium brought the team. Before the colts we only had the Pacers and that wasnt a big enough anchor to build a downtown around. The stadium help build the convention center and over the last 30 years downtown Indianapolis has become a convention destination of the midwest. This city has benefited greatly from building that first stadium. The second stadium is another story.

@@rachray83 permanent teams are just as bad. They get billion dollar stadiums built to play 8 games a year. The jobs they do bring in are seasonal so the employees collect unemployment in the off season. They permanently raise taxes to build them. If they did bring money into a city overall, they could sell bonds to pay for the stadium, then pay off the bonds with the additional tax revenue. That never happens. Even small cities are still paying higher taxes for stadiums that have been torn down and replaced only to have the taxes raise again for the new stadium.

My dad's family is in farming, and growing up as a kid hearing about their experiences with the government really opened my eyes to just how corrupt and ineffective it is. I cant speak to any tax breaks they may or may not have gotten/be getting (just outside of what was talked about with me), but they really seem to only get massively screwed by the state. Decades ago, a large amount of land was taken from them via eminent domain and they were nowhere near properly compensated. Like I dont have the actual number on me, but it was a disgustingly pitiful amount per acre. And this was so serious that a large divide in the family was actually formed over whether to sue the government over it or not, but they didnt in the end. And more recently, an overreach I got to witness happen myself was when the government redid this canal, but in doing so, they cut off the water supply for months and months to a large area of my uncle's land, killing entire fields of crops. These crops had been a nearly decade-long investment that had only started producing product for the last couple of years, but now they were all dead. And the government couldnt have cared less. Just disgusting. It's very possible that my father's generation will be the last actual farmers and that the land will just all be sold soon, since they're getting older, and of my cousins and I, only 1 of us is regularly involved with the farming/ranching. It's sad, but what can you do? Just seriously not an easy business. Edit: This is California for reference. Edit 2: Also, I am still against subsidies/tax breaks for random industries, but I also think that governents need to be more easily held accountable when they screw people over in matters involving land. Maybe even abolish eminent domain altogether (altho that'd take an Amendment). I think it's an important part of the conversation in this case.

Yeah farming is a rough job, I don't think stossel completely understands that situation.

@@Zach-ju5vi I was thinking the same. Saying "Farmers are richer than average americans" is deeply misleading. Family farms are not rich, and don't receive government wellfare in this way. Only the very large corporate farms are getting these government benefits.

So true that once the government starts giving subsidies, they never stop. That’s why every new Bill that hands out money should be deeply considered by every individual taxpayer

This is why we need to look at what is in these spending bills. Question the $2 trillion spending bill.

I remember last year when they gave emergency financial aid to colleges to hand out to students at their discretion. My college just gave money to anyone with a Pell Grant. Little did they know I had started a high paying job that semester that wasn't cut because of covid. They never checked if my financial situation was the same as the previous year. Even the Pell Grant itself is based on income from two years prior. My parents could have been making six figures my last 3 semesters and we still would have gotten it.

@@professorcranium4792 that's to avoid property taxes though, I'm not even sure I'm not okay with that. I think that if everybody else has to pay property taxes, then so should the churches and "churches", but I also don't really think anybody should have to pay property taxes. Schools, PDs, FDs, etc. could be paid for with income tax instead of forcing people to basically pay rent to their city. Very torn on that one..

Glad Stossel finally tackled this topic. In a capitalistic society wouldn’t the taxpayers (investor) get a ROI? Cheaper tickets? Free games? None of that. So what would that be called?
