Unbelievably, when first introduced, the Terrier tank locos were mainline passenger locos, hauling commuter trains in and out of London. Latterly, after replacement by bigger locos, they moved onto branchline services, such as the Hayling Island branch. Do not worry about the future of the hobby - as with everything when one door closes, another opens. One big retailer calling it a day - very sensible when you look at the timing (from their business perspective) and the loss of one big exhibition is not a sign of doomsday looming. As the Warley club has said, their members are getting older and putting on a massive show is getting beyond what they are comfortable with. Again, very sensible. What we probably havent heard about is the number of clubs that have disappeared. But then, not everyone has a need to be a part of a club - I did for a few years, but now prefer to do my own thing, on my own. I've still got mates who are modellers and most of those friendships have been made over the internet and then at exhibitions. This hobby has such a diverse band of followers - most of whom, do model, and get enjoyment from, a very diverse range of subjects. One of the great things about your channel is that you go to shows and point out superb modelling of great detail, but then produce great content around what you like to buy and collect - quite different things. Media savvy youngsters seem to love Francis and now he is doing a bit more with model trains, that might rub off. (Personally, I think its all a load of tosh, but you cant please all the people, all the time). Hornby caught a bit of a cold when they tried to diversify with SteamPunk models, so Im not sure we will see anyone try that type of link up again, but who knows.

Support your local shop! I love a 47. I have many Lima ones - 37 is Railfreight Distibution sector livery - love the Lima 37s - such good value.... love the Ruston 48DS too - I have the Army one and the Whisky Distillers one. Argh the pocket rockets... but the chassis can be useful for 3d printed industrial loco building. I dont know why but Im not keen on the A1/A1X's. Each to their own I spoze. Not a LNER fan but I have got the TTX sound 'Gadwall' in garter blue. Well you have to have one... Some of them books encourage one to fall down rivet counting rabbit holes... Great fun video, thanks both!

I've kept a lot of locos, rolling stock and buildings since I was a teenager. I have done a few sell and swaps over the years too, but I only got stuff that was right for the size of layout that I had. I think what you said about the zombie train is right, a lot of young people are in to horror or sci-fi related stuff and a train that ticks those boxes is sure to get them interested. I've always taken to steam as I grew up with Thomas and The Railway Series books and also living nearby to the Severn Valley Railway. I do like modern image stuff too like Class 37s in rail freight grey but there aren't many kicking around at an affordable price, even at second hand. I love going to model shops as you can ask for advice on anything about the hobby, a model shop near me repaired the tender for my Flying Scotsman loco so now it runs smoothly. I have bought online too as I've found items I want much cheaper than in shops or even Hornby's own website. All the best, Alex.

Hi Alex, I wish I had kept mine. I collect cars as well especially ones from the Bond films. I think the manufactures missed a trick in not making a model of the Soviet Missile train from Goldeneye. The one used in the film was a modded class 20. Thanks for watching Rick

@@wellchuffedrailways Hello Rick, yes you are indeed correct about the train from the Goldeneye movie. It was very unique in how they designed it to dress up the Class 20. I really like 20s as well as 73s and Warships, which is why I am willing to collect them, regardless of how old they are. I really liked how you got an American caboose as it is good to see you branch out to trying trains from around the world. I'm thinking of doing the same in collecting European HO. I've got some wagons and now I just need a continental loco to pull them. I'm not planning on doing a sole European HO layout but just something to run on my current layout every now and then.

When I was a kid, my dad was into model trains and I thought he was daft. I liked to build model planes and model cars. When I got a bit older I was heavy into slot car racing building my own brass chassis and rewinding motors to make them go faster. Then I got into music and girls like all teens do.🤣 Now I'm into the trains again. Maybe my dad wasn't as daft as I thought.

Hi Rick & Pauline, great video again, so much sad and seen, interesting topics. Perhaps start with my thought on the doomsday thinking on the hobby. A big retailer has stopped, a big show cancelled, and Hornby announced only one new tooling this year and the hobby seemed to be doomed, give us a break. You never had so many producers and gauges as we have today, and If you would buy all the new tooling for this year, you must have a very big purse. There are shifts in the hobby, like pre order, on line buying, more detail - higher prices, and an extensive choice from Era1 to si-fi and that is all normal. And lets be honest all over Europe, and the UK is no exception in this, we're in a recession and I predict that we've not seen the end of it, resulting that normal day life has become really expensive and the first thing that has to give in are hobbies. That's why the secondhand market is booming, an average new model £200, you have 4 models for that on the secondhand market, and there is nothing wrong with that. I think the second hand market at the moment is the lifeline for the hobby, that keeps the less well of modeler going, and keeps the community together. As for the big shows like Warley, I think I heard someone say £40 income, that screams stay away, and all you see there are the manufacturers, not the small secondhand business, so you don't go there to do a bargain as a small collector. You go to a small local show spend £5 income and buy 7 secondhand wagons for that price. As a Belgian British train collector, it's obvious I buy most things online as there is not much British for sale here in the shops. But when I come over to the UK, I wouldn't have been in the UK if I didn't visit my local smal retailer there, it's the place where same thinking minds come together, and if you have a good retailer, everything is discussed over a hot brew. And a smart retailer would always have a secondhand section, so long live the smal retailer and please support them. Anyway, I think we'll stop here, otherwise I will have written a book in the end🤣😜 Cheers, Danny

I'm sure the hobby is relatively healthy considering the state of everyone's finances, however it still leaves the question of are there enough modellers out there to carry it on in the future?
@dannyvanstraelen3273
@dannyvanstraelen3273 5 ай бұрын
@@wellchuffedrailways I don't see any reason why not, look how many people alone attend shows, and there is almost every weekend one somewhere in the UK… I waited for more then two years on the GWR steam railmotor from Kernow, they arrive begin Januari from china, and with a full team the still are shipping off. I think this doomsday thinking is a bit far fetched. There will be slight changes like Pre order etc., but there is still enough people buying. It won't be for tomorrow that the hobby wil die…

I've got the Hornby Doublo version (City of London) of the Wrenn you showed, of 1959 vintage. My dad and I ran it almost continuously in the 1970s, but it was then stored until last year, and was by then a non-runner. OOBill was kind enough to repair/refurbish it and now it's doing what it did in the 1970s: running as smoothly as a swiss watch and bringing back some lovely childhood memories.

nice old brake van or caboose of the Katy, that is Missouri Kansas Texas railroad. Wikipedia says about the caboose, that now is gone in the us ; Cabooses were used on every freight train in the United States and Canada until the 1980s,[1] when safety laws requiring the presence of cabooses and full crews were relaxed. A major purpose of the caboose was for observing problems at the rear of the train before they caused trouble. By the way ,The Katy Railroad formally was merged into the Union Pacific Railroad system on August 12, 1988. The other blue brake vans look very nice too. Great video !

Thank you for another great video to cheer up the weekend. Totally agree with you about the options available from Manufacturers and would love to sell the trains that we remember from our own era, rather than a "Rocket" or a "Lion" (I don't recall seeing them running myself). It's lovely to see more detailed versions of well known engines, but time after time? Would love to see a Class 303 "Blue Train" which were the predominate trains on my local line from Gourock to Glasgow in the 70s/80s, but only available in kit form (if you can find one) or a £700 ready built kit...slightly outside of my price zone and didn't love them that much ☺ We need to get you up to Scotland for a couple of shows...Perth is a great show.
@dannyvanstraelen3273
@dannyvanstraelen3273 5 ай бұрын
I think it just the rockets and the Lion's we need I'm glad that someone is finely producing era 1, as I'm a big fan of it. But I agree that we need is les 18th generation version Flying Scotsman, A4's etc. I think it's just because for a long while only main stream interests where made, that we now say not again The choice of an era or a fantasy like the Beatles range, or movie props, this must also be possible, for the fans of that. There are so many models that never have been produced being it modern or old, this is what I want to see more… I think this was the reason in the first place that people turned to kit's at the time because non of these models where available.

I think that models in 00 scale has been "done to death" by all the manufacturers. There are only so many versions you can make. You are right how many versions of flying scotsman do you need? The same with class 66s, 37s & 47s. The 00 market has been saturated. Hornby have probably made a good decision to launch TT120 as it opens a new market.
@dannyvanstraelen3273

I think the 00 scale isn't doomed at all, but I agree with you on the overdose of Flying Scotsman's and A4. But we still have great new tooling, and the choice has never been as big as it is now. TT120 is a good solution for people with less space and N gauge just to small for what reason so ever. And that's why it was such a big hype at the start and it will in the end flatten out as every other gauge. But it's a good thing it exist and no doubt it's a solution that to the demand.
