This is by far "the Bowie" I love, the whole album is brilliant and easily sits w/ his greatest works and there are so many. There is imagery all through that is his history, and to those who followed him for decades it was a jolt. I knew something was gravely wrong, but didn't at the same time. It took me 2 years to fully listen to Blackstar, I didn't want to say goodbye, but what a goodbye.

I hate that comment, I have heard it so many times. Such a COLD reaction. For such a passionate album about the approach of death. I listen to it (too often) and cry. I loved David since I was a kid, but this came out just when my husband lost all kidney function, and I became his caregiver. Nothing has been the same ever since. Forty years of marriage ...

15:37 Bowie's impending death was VERY "beknownst" to him. It's what the album is about. A "black star" is a type of cancer lesion.

They called him the "Chameleon" of rock for a reason. Always evolving. No this song is NOT typical of Bowie. It's great but his music changes through the decades and that's a GOOD thing!

Before people get here to recommend the basic songs like Fame and Let's Dance you'd probably recognize immediately, I want to slip in tracks that have a lot more substance and show off his variety better: All the Madmen My Death (Jacques Brel cover) - live Hammersmith 1973 Lady Grinning Soul Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (Reprise) Win Sons of the Silent Age Teenage Wildlife As the World Falls Down Seven Years in Tibet Slip Away These will absolutely impress. They're all from different years. Definitely check them out if you want to hear amazing deep cuts. He mostly wrote singles so record labels would put his albums out, and stopped playing a lot of them once he made it big. Great video, guys!

Damn- of all the songs in his catalogue, you happened to list many of my very favorites - Sweet Thing, Lady Grinning Soul, Win, ... and on... I thought for a fraction of a second that it was a list that I’d compiled😘 I’m really big into not rating music hierarchically - but it warms me soul that another human chooses some of their favorites (and some are to be fair, “deep cuts,” ie “Slip Away”) and they are also mine:)

@@edwardmeradith2419 They're very good, and uncommon for people to experience, even some of the fans. I think they'd make outstanding reactions and revitalize the songs for a lot of people who don't remember them or know them. Showcase the versatility. Give the channel a unique signature. The biggest plus on my end would be watching someone hear them for the first time. It's always satisfying. 😌

Regarding "down votes" I'm guessing your right. People might watch this and say "What the heck is this? It makes no sense. Has nothing to say to me. It's garbage". And then they dismiss it because it requires some thought and reflection. Our society seems to discourage and disparage anything that doesn't fit into neat little categories. This song and video are a challenge. Most people don't like to be challenged. They get defensive and angry. Oh well. Their loss.

David Bowie created the alter-ego of Ziggy Stardust because prior to that he had been booed of stage and he felt that if that happened it would be his alter ego that was being booed not him. David Bowie has the sort of talent that was ahead of his time - it was controversial until 10 years afterwards and then everybody would say OK I get it now. It is not about the lyrics, it is not about the vocal, it is not about the visual - it is about how it makes you feel

What I like about the whole Blackstar album is that Bowie uniquely infuses many of his past sounds into this masterpiece. "Is it me?" is a line he used before. There are a lot of Aladdin Sane overtones, some Station to Station overtones and jazz fusion going on too. Then there is the Major Tom tie back and the overtones of his first few albums. The album is brilliant. One could say it is a fitting wrap up of the character.

Good for you guys taking on this reaction. The video for me is Bowie trying to comes to terms with his impending death. Video aside, the song for me is absolute genius. For him to come up with this level of creativity at 70 odd years of age is amazing.

Par for the course, Bowie never aimed for par. He took chances, gambled, won the world, lost it all, clawed it back and reached an artistic level that allowed him to explore what he wanted. He had a band that he used, cared for, collaborated with and created transcendent art. He is not a Rockstar he leapt over that hurdle and became an immortal. He is with the likes of Mozart,Picasso Rembrandt. You guys missed out.

Major Tom is a character in his first major song hit. Major Tom is the character that has popped up again in imagery and lyrics. In this Black Star video he is here again. So just a fun fact. For the Black Star album Bowie played with a jazz band, so there is a lot of jazz influence on this album.

You will find it very difficult to pigeonhole Bowie. Don't always go for the well known songs. Deeper cuts are often far more interesting. You will have a vast catalogue to cover. You may hate some, you may love it all, but don't let one album or even one song make a decision for you. He's basically covered more genres of music than most while putting his own spin on things. Enjoy the ride!

You should check out Bowie and his bass player and vocalist version.. Gayle Anne Dorsy ,it's simply brilliant.

Mention of Major Tom in the comments. In 1980, he did "Ashes to Ashes" here's some lyrics. M.T. was a reoccurring character in multiple songs over decades. I'm stuck with a valuable friend "I'm happy, hope you're happy too" One flash of light but no smoking pistol I never done good things I never done bad things I never did anything out of the blue, woh-o-oh Want an axe to break the ice Wanna come down right now Ashes to ashes, funk to funky We know Major Tom's a junkie Strung out in heaven's high Hitting an all-time low

What I take away from this is a full-circle sequel to Space Oddity. Major Tom was lost to the greatness of space and died on some distant planet. Give me a break! They are also the same ones that have to stop the song every 20 seconds to give you their opinion or what they think the artist was trying to say in the lyrics.
