Күн бұрын

With a camera mounted on the front of one of the powerful ex South African NGG16 Garratt locomotives No. 87 our train eases out of Porthmadog station onto the Britannia Road Bridge and level crossing. Number 87 negotiates its way through the town before crossing the Cambrian Coast railway via Britain’s only mixed gauge flat crossing. For a short distance we run next to the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway (WHHR) to Pen y Mount junction, passing under the new Porthmadog bypass into open countryside. Shortly after Pont Croesor station is an interesting bridge carrying both road and rail over the Afon Glaslyn (River Glaslyn). With the distant hills looming on the horizon we steam through pleasant farmland punctuated by the odd river bridge to Nantmor halt after which the character of the line changes as we enter the Aberglaslyn Pass via No.4 tunnel. Bursting from the tunnel onto a ledge high above the pretty river below, with glorious mountain scenery all around we are now traversing one of the most photographed locations in the country. We leave the Aberglaslyn Pass via Goat tunnel to enter Beddgelert station where a Porthmadog bound train is waiting for us to clear the single line. The noise from our engine increases as it lifts its train through the wooded slopes to the summit marker board a mile or so short of Rhyd Ddu station.
This video was first posted 15th August 2017. I replaced it on 17th June 2020 when a spelling mistake in the opening title was pointed out, a bit embarrassing, especially as it had gone unnoticed for so long. Original Video - • OLD VERSION - Welsh Hi...
Track gauge - 1 ft 11 1⁄2 in (597 mm)
One question that has come up many times in the comments for both the Welsh Highland and Ffestiniog Railways is "Why doesn't the train leave the tracks when it passes through a switch set for the opposite track" - it is not east to explain, but I'll try -
The switches at either end on the passing loop are set to allow trains to pass without the need for railway personnel to set them, in this case the train will always take the right hand track in the direction of travel, when the train reaches the end of the loop the switch appears to be set incorrectly. The switch blades are held in place by a spring mechanism that allows them to be pushed over by the weight of a train passing through them. Once the train is clear they are automatically set to allow a train in the opposite direction to take the right hand track, thus making the passing loop automatic. The system works well so long as a train never reverses before clearing the switch as that will de-rail the train. The first time this system is seen in operation it looks wrong, but it is common practice on many lines where speed is low and costs need to be kept to a minimum.

We walked a lot of this track before the build, my friend mike and myself spent many days and weeks viewing and dreaming about it being finished, unfortunatley Mike only ever got to see it as far as Beddgellert, he passed two years before completion, This is a wonderful railway that is a credit to the hard work by some fantastic workers and volunteers.

Hello, I did the same as you and your friend Mike. As long ago as the mid 60's I used to walk the trackbed with my father and grandfather wondering what it must have been like to see a train running through the Aberglaslyn Pass. I'm sorry to hear that your friend Mike didn't get to see the line completed. The people who brought this wonderful line back to life certainly deserve a well earned "thank you".

This is an absolutely great video, I now live in Australia but if I ever get back to the UK this will be No 1 on my list, I often travelled around these parts when British Rail were running back in the early 1960s and once travelled from Pwllheli to Carmarthen but alas these routes don't exist anymore, this is why this little railway is so important to not only visitors but to the local communities, long may it continue.

Hi, I'm looking forward to returning to Australia for more railway adventures, hopefully the Savannahlander and the railways of Tasmania. You were lucky to have ridden the Pwllheli to Caernarfon line, something I'd love to have done. If you able to get back to the UK some day, I'm sure you'll love the Welsh Highland Railway, it's a gem with a character similar to that of Australia's Puffing Billy.

Hi, this is a railway that holds a special place in my heart, when my grandfather used to tell me the footpath we were walking on was once a narrow gauge railway, I thought he was pulling my leg, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I'd one day ride a train where I had once walked. I'm really pleased you enjoyed the ride.

We went on this journey in June 2019. It was the most lovely scenic route. There are stops on the journey that you can alight. One is Pont Croesor where you can visit the Glaslyn Osprey Centre. We had a lovely time in Caernarfon before returning to Porthmadog. Well worth it..

Hi, from your channel name, I guess you visited Portmeirion whilst you were in the area. As you point out the line doesn't just go from one place to another, it serves places that are worth visiting in their own right, such the Glaslyn Osprey Centre, Beddgelert Village, Beddgelert Forest and Snowdon Ranger for an alternative walk to the the summit of Mount Snowdon. It is a beautiful part of the world.

There is something very special about Welsh scenery, the mountains are not the highest and it rains a lot. I love the dry stone walls, pretty villages and glorious coastline, there are few places in the world to beat walking across Barmouth bridge on a warm sunny evening, the views are stunning. I've been fortunate to see a bit of the world, there are many awesome places, but few come close to matching North Wales, with its wonderful scenery, intriguing folk lore, unpronounceable place names and fascinating industrial heritage of which the narrow gauge railways are an integral part.

I remember seeing the originals of these trips but it's nice to watch them again. Your explanation of how spring-loaded "trailing" points work was good. I can remember standing on the overhead foot-bridge near the train station in my town and watching shunting operations going on, with a couple of sets of points being weight-loaded rather than spring-loaded but giving the same effect. The points would be held in one position unless someone pulled the lever or unless a wagon came through from the trailing end of the "unselected" track, and I would watch the lever jump as the rolling wagon pushed the points temporarily to the position to allow the wagon go through.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed it a second time. The spring points alarmed so many viewers, I thought I'd try to explain how they worked, usually I can find something on the internet I can post a link to, but I didn't find an explanation for sprung or weighted points. Like yourself, I can remember the days when wagons were individually shunted, it was common practice to allow wagons to push the point blades over in the manner you describe.

@@josephkarl2061 I my memory serves me correctly Märklin could be either three rail or stud contact, making it easier to have trains running in opposite directions on the same track, today it it is simple with modern computer controllers, when I built my model railway, Hornby had just introduced their Zero 1 controllers, the cost of converting all my locomotives was beyond my pocket, so I used conventional systems with automatic train control activated by read switches to reverse the polarity and change the points, the system was made by AMR. My single track circuits still use this system today, it would have been much easier to use the system you saw.

I guess the locomotive is travelling forward when the boiler is in front of the cab, but is that a tender carrying water in front of the boiler? it's a bit of a conundrum, it could be argued that the engine is facing forward whichever way it is facing, the one thing that wasn't in doubt was that the engine was at the front of the train 😉.

Hi, this railway is operated using a combination of volunteers and full time staff, helped with additional funding from sources such as members donations and subscriptions, Welsh development agency funding and National Lottery grants for specific projects. The railway probably doesn't cover its operating costs from ticket sales alone, but it attracts tourists to the area who spend money in hotels, cafes and other tourist attractions. Take in the wider context the Welsh narrow gauge railways make a useful contribution the the economy of the country. The WHR operates throughout the Spring, Summer and Autumn, with limited Santa special trains in Winter. Please click on this link for some of the history behind this remarkable railway - www.festrail.co.uk/welsh-highland-railway-history/ I am familiar with the Rimutaka incline having walked some of the route and visited the Fell Locomotive museum at Featherston, I'd love to have seen that line before it closed. You live in a nice part of the world. Cheers. Tim

The train runs parallel to the tracks of the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, a separate organisation also formed with the intention of rebuilding some or all of the original Welsh Highland Railway. Please click on this link to learn more about the society - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welsh_Highland_Heritage_Railway To take a ride along the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway tracks please click on this link - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i7Vgf6Sbsp-pc6s.html

Hi, according to Google 'Rhyd Ddu' is pronounced 'rheed-thee' and Wikipedia gives the meaning as 'Black Ford'.

@@jamestoyn9755 Hi, it is unlikely that a locomotive from Talyllyn Railway has or will ever run on the Welsh Highland railway as they are different gauges - Talyllyn Railway 2 ft 3 in, Welsh Highland 1 ft 11 1⁄2 in. Tim.

Hi again Someone with loads of knowledge on the Walxh Narrow gauge railway sent me an amazing detail of information on the history of the glorious railway and they mentioned that the loaded trains went un pulled from the Slate quarries to Portnadog by gravity and that the train was back empty by Horses pulling it and that there were carriages to carry the Horses on the gravity journey.. This was absolutely fascinating information and I saved it somewhere on my Laptop BUT now I cant find it and I am desperately disappointed that I cant find it.. Is there any chance that someone could send the information back to me again Pleeeeease. Thank you in anticipation. Sean

The Welsh Highland Railway was still a footpath back then and the Ffestiniog Railway was only half re-opened, it's incredible what the determination of the volunteers has achieved.

Sure sounds like a crank-pin bushing, or associated part, has worn enormous clearance, with resulting latin rhythm-section. Time to inject some super-stiff grease?
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, I think the noise you can hear is the mechanical lubricator located on the front of the locomotive next to the camera.
@jacquesblaque7728
@jacquesblaque7728 4 жыл бұрын
@@Timsvideochannel1 Not making certified diagnosis of course, but the sound is extremely "heavy" compared to some little lubricator piston(s). Betting line here is definitely extensive "motion" clearances, from wear. Big clue: reciprocating engine applies force alternating in direction, at twice rate of wheel rotation. IOW, serious stuff.

Перевозки прошлый век, пути узкие из за этого теряется скорость и увеличивается аварийность, и сам тепловоз тоже прошлый век.
