Our power went out on the 24th.. yes it was FREEZING.. we do a lot of outdoor cooking and when the power is out we just cook outside and light the lamps and the fireplace.. the heaters were perfect for this

I can imagine.. I had generators but got rid of them.. noisy at night and did want someone stealing them.. and couldn’t get gas because the power would be out at the stations as well .. thanks for sharing your experience.. stay safe and have a great week

I have heard that mentioned a lot… luckily I haven’t seen soot issues from the heater.. the fireplace is another story!! Out of curiosity, have you tried lowering your wick or replacing your wick. Thanks for watching and for the kind comment.

@@wemcal most of my heaters are KeroSun. IMO, best heaters made..my favorites are the Kerosun Moonlighter, sips fuel, and my Kerosun Radiant 8.. I have an Omni 105, and a Toyostove DC100, for the coldest of nights.. We live on our very large boat, so I switch up the heaters, depending on outside temps..

@@wemcal tried straight diesel once. Ruined the wick pretty fast. I stay away from diesel. Only use K-1, with additive. Friend of mine owns a diesel truck stop, they sell bulk kero at the pump. I store just over 100 gal, on my boats aft deck, in 5 gal containers..I start stocking up, end of summer.

The fireplace is great however that kerosene heats the house quicker and no heat is lost.. with the fireplace burning I also have to wait until the wood is burned out, with the kerosene heater I just hit the cutoff switch. I also have a kerosene heater in the sleeping area of the house that kept that side warm… don’t get me wrong that fireplace was PLENTY helpful (I can cook in it) … thanks for that comment and check out some of my other videos… have a wonderful week

You’re getting the same weather here… super cold 5 degrees.. if you get one of these heaters you can open a window 1 - 1 1/2 inches.. it is to bring that air in from oxygen depletion, make sure you have a carbon detector in the room… with the electrical cords, check the bottom of your doors to see if there’s a gap. If there is a small gap, you can run that electrical cord through that gap similar to what I do with my Christmas lights. I run the cord under the door through a small gap that’s in the door. If not, you can save just a little enough to make sure that the cord won’t turn when you close the door. There are some electrical cords that are flat as well. Check your hardware stores to see if you can find a flat electrical cord that will help out a lot. The only problems you may have with a generator is having the generator running at night or when you may need to leave the house you don’t want anyone to steal your generator? @@wemcal I’m using Snow Peak, which is a high grade camping brand. It’s designed for outdoor use with high durability but I’m using it indoor. I bought it for my friend with affordable price as second hand in very good condition. It cannot ship overseas in used condition so I keep it and using it.

@@wemcal actually in Japan, people use Corona, Toyotomi, Dainichi or sometimes Aladin for indoor use. The price is half or even 1/3 compared to the one with same output power for camping. The heater for indoor which requires ac plug usually equipped with stink eliminator, timer, and fuel efficiency controller. And the one without ac plug will be much simpler.

@@moses1202 stink eliminator??? That is something that needs more explaining.. I have heard of a few of the brands you mentioned and know they are about 10500 btu, but never heard of a stink controller… if you and explain how it works please do, it may be helpful and I would like to find one… thanks for sharing your knowledge with us…

@@wemcal maybe it’s called deodorization, it uses catalyzer and specialized combustion system to eliminate the smell.

Yes the box style is called ‘radiant style’. The round ones are called ‘Omni style’.

Good day.. changing the wick depends on the model you have, isn’t that hard once you get to it and they kinds slip on, how often you change it depends on how much you use it.. it won’t lit quickly, the flame will be low and it won’t produce a lot of heat.. that’s when you need to change it.. the soot could be the wick is not installed properly and needs to be reset or replaced… if you purchase one of these you will have to put the cage on and wait a hour or two after you put your kerosene in to let the wick soak.. make sure you have some kind of venting.. thanks for the comment and I hope everything works well for you.. please checkout some of my other videos and please consider subscribing if you haven’t already.. thanks for watching and enjoy your weekend

@@wemcal Thanks bud! Ironically we didn't lose power, but my Monitor kerosene heater died. Argh! I It was wonky earlier on in the season but to die during this crippling storm, while I'm recovering from a hip replacement was stress level 10. It's been a rough month for us here in Maine as 2 major storms knocked out power to the majority of the state both times and it's the 4 major storm or the winter. Disaster declaration level. . I was able to nurse the heater back on later in the day and it sporadically worked the last 2 weeks, until I found company that refurbished this discontinued heater. My nightmare is over. Be well.

@@wemcal Most older houses have oil. Mine was built with electric heat in the late 70's and i believe a lot of use went to kerosene Monitors because electricity was so expensive after the oil embargo and these Monitors are so efficient too. It still is. The thing is a workhorse. I hadn't had it serviced in like 10 years because my service guy I had said they stopped making parts so i decided to run it till it quit. My new service person was surprised it ran so long. One reason she said that Hitachi stopped making them in 2014 was that they were so dependable, nobody bought new ones lol. Her and her father's business found an aftermarket parts company and they have a bunch of Monitors they refurbish and sell or use for parts. I'll link you a couple of stories. Now new houses here are mostly heat pumps, but there is still a Japanese company selling a oil/kerosene style Monitor heater. I was thinking about a heat pump for the cooling, but to refurbish this old workhorse for under a thousand dollars, I now have time to think about it. If I can remember correctly.. I would light two heaters every 2 or 3 hours for about an hour and a half with 4 oil lamps burning while I was up… the following morning I did the same with the fireplace burning.. and start cooking outside.. the power came on the evening of the 24th.. from that experience I realize that keeping the house at 70 is based on the outside weather and having power.. at 45-30 degrees it doesn’t take long to heat the house and the heat last longer, more like knock the chill out.. those 30-22 degree usually last about 3 days and if the power goes out it’s for about 4-6 hour.. the house is comfortable most of the time.. this time was totally different.. 3-6 degrees when the power went out and I thought it would be on before 11 that night, so I just light the heaters every 2-3 hour.. those oil lamps also put out heat.. the money spent on kerosene that whole season was about $55 dollars, I burned about 7 gallons of kerosene from November to February.. thanks for watching and commenting.. let’s pray we all will not have go through this again

@@wemcal exchanged tanks are never 20 lbs, they fill 15 lbs for safety.as a matter of fact it is stating on the tank 15 lbs...when you filled they fill 20 lbs..just for you to make apple to apple comparison..there is 5 lbs differance

No thanks… this was cold enough for us.. we’re not custom to low single digit weather.. most of our cold days are 2-4 days in the mid 20s, probably 1 day in the high teens… we started getting these weeks of single digit temperatures 3 years ago… my question is… do your power go out and how in the heck do you keep warm?? I live in Texas. This summer was high humidity, 45°C for 3+ months. Our infrastructure isn’t built for low temperatures like in Canada. We actually had a lot of people that died from exposure in the winter of ‘21 because of power grid shutdowns. So don’t pat yourself on the back putting us down for preparing for dangerous cold weather.

I’m in Tennessee.. we were shut for 3 weeks from that 2021 winter freeze/ice storm but the temperature didn’t get in the single digits.. 2022 winter freeze was ice and snow with temperatures 2-4 degrees for 3 days with no power…er go out and how in the heck do you keep warm?? I'm sure you are thinking that he's talking about 4 Celsius and it's actually 4 degrees F (which is 15 c) If you aren't used to those temps and your power goes out, then it can be a major problem. Frozen pipes, no "plug ins" for cars like northern Canada has... Homes aren't as insulated and power grids sometimes can't handle the below freezing temps or storms that come up. This video is great info for those who live in less severe climates like you do.

@@ggmcsassy Exactly! Texas infrastructure designed for the normal weather we have here. Severe winters are very uncommon here. In ‘21, we had 4-5 days that reached about 0°F-1°F, and may have rose to 14°F during the day. We were without power and running water for 5-6 days. A lot of people rallied about Ercott not being prepared for the power outages, but it hadn’t been a major issue in the past, so I get why the power providers weren’t prepared. If they hiked prices to pay for infrastructure upgrades, those same people would be b*tching about their prices being raised. There is no winning. I’ve harped about it on other videos about doing the minimum to take care of yourself in an environmental emergency. Like keeping and rotating a large stock of drinking water and non-perishable food, getting a small inverter generator with 15-20 gallons of ethanol-free gas, to keep the fridge and lights running, and a kero heater with 10-15 gallons of kerosene. Maintaining both and understand how to operate. People should make it a priority to prepare themselves for winter emergencies, or at VERY least discuss emergency plans with family/trusted neighbors so a group can go to an agreed house and bring said supplies. It doesn’t take much effort to share contact info with your immediate neighbors so yall can look out for each other.
