A separator of some kind would prevent that clogging. The downside is that it will reduce the airflow to a degree. Some separators do a better job than others, but they all reduce airflow. #YouCanMakeThisToo did some testing of two different kinds of separators, though much larger than you would need, but I think it demonstrates how a cyclone can be more efficient than some other designs. My guess is that you'd probably still get close to 400cfm out of this unit with a cyclone separator, which would still be suitable for your planer. The separator will keep most of the sawdust and particles out of the bag, letting it work more like an exhaust filter than a waste recepticle. The other upgrade would be replacing the bag with a 5 micron bag. A cannister filter would be better but that's double what you paid for the DC. The 5 micron bag will do a better job of keeping airborne dust at bay.

I removed that gate that was causing the clogs and also removed the tabs going into the bag. Not sure if it will do much damage but was tired of having to stop to clear clogs. Now Im even able to vaccum the leaves in my yard with this unit.
