This inspired me for a poem, read it if you want. Be wary of the hunters land Folks who went there now are damned Ugly creatures, creepy plants All is deadly even ants Their fearsome king as dark as night No single soul ran from his bite Fresh human flesh he desires Tears your guts with nails like wires Sixty fangs hard as stone Eats worse than beasts wont leave a bone He was just a bandit filled with hate When he realized it was too late His hunger for flesh quickly grew By morning he ate all his crew Afraid of sun to the forest he fled Forever there without an end (Dont forget to leave a rating if u read tho, would appreciate it)

a lot of people depict the creature as a slightly altered humanoid that has acquired a need for human flesh as a source of sustenance, but honestly a bipedal deer corpse or humanoid with deer features is way more terrifying than something that is basically just a zombie. Edit: ok so the wendigo is apparently the hunched-back human-like cannibal creature, the deer corpse and deer/man thing are actually different creatures entirely.

The Wechuge would be the one that looks like a deer and has a more bestial appearance. It is a completely different species but is mistaken for a Wendigo a lot in modern day horror culture. The thing in Until Dawn is a good example of what an actual Wendigo looks like.

I am spreading the word of this. I talked to an Ojibwe tribesmen regarding the Wen, and what he said changed my perspective entirely. And this is what he said to me. Regarding the more skinnier version we are familiar with via Until Dawn: “No, that's what modern people made it to be. The actual spirit is the embodiment of winter. It is literally made of ice. I’m Ojibwe, which is one of the tribes that the story comes from. To us, that spirit is the bringer of winter, the great hunter and the northern spirit. It is the one who brings the snow but is also the consumer of life, known to take on the form of a human made of ice and hunt humans.” In regards to the media Wen “There is a reason for that actually. We used to put up deer skulls at places that had some form of bad medicine (black magic) being practice there, and when a medicine man was found practicing bad medicine they were kicked from the village and the villagers would hang deer skulls around the medicine man to warn other tribes of this person's crimes.” Regarding the cannibalistic tendencies "We didn't create cannibalistic tendencies, the people who journeyed west from Europe did. Our stories are not for horror, it's real life lessons. Don't go traveling during winter and get caught in a snowstorm, or you end up trapped and being eaten by your friends. Basically these stories are more like the boogeyman stories, be good or the boogeyman will get you. Native Americans taught the British a life lesson but they took it as a warning and that's why we have today's version.” Regarding its true form "It is WINTER, and more than just winter, it's the raging blizzards that comes with it, the fasting you have to do to conserve food, the starving that comes with the end of winter when you dont have enough food, its also the lost of people who cant survive the cold." Regarding how to kill it: "Nothing except a warm house and warmer fire." The Wen has no true actual form, and no true weakness. It is less a cryptid and more a force of nature, something you just need to let pass and pray to the Gods it is merciful on you and your warmth that it can easily snuff out. Everything and anything Winter can do, a Wen can do effortlessly for it IS Winter. Oh, and one last fun fact: do try and refrain from speaking the full name often, it is considered disrespectful by the indigenous people to say its name aloud. It has that much of an impact on them.

You awaken in the middle of the night in your uncle's old wooden cabin located deep in the forest. What caused you to wake was an eerie feeling that something was off, something that is unnatural, but you can't put your finger to it. Then suddenly you start to hear the sound of instruments far off in the distance. The cabins' location is far off from any hint of civilization other than a dirt trail that leads to the front. As you lie awake in your bed you start to think that the sounds of the instruments are getting louder, but that's impossible, right? The sounds of horns and drums just keep getting louder and as you finally get up to inspect what could possibly be making those noises you hear a monstrous screech which shakes you to your core. After standing in shock, you convince yourself to step forward and bravely (but stupidly) open the door to the cabin and go outside. You look in the direction of where the music is coming from and see a very distant and small flicker of light which looks to be from a fire. So, you pick up the fire axe that was near the door and start to slowly head in that direction in which you saw the flames. The music just keeps revving up and getting more intense as time goes on. As your walking towards the fire, it suddenly dissipates but the music keeps going. The music is at its most intense and you feel your head bursting from the sounds, and you suddenly get a feeling of uneasiness and despair as well as a foul-smelling odor. Then you hear the same monstrous sound as before, it's as if beyond the trees ahead of you the music and the roar was just a short distance in front of you. You freeze in fear as you realize that you should not have come this far from the cabin and that something is in front of you. You can't call for help. You can't run to safety. You can't even move. And as you're watching the tree right in front of you, you can swear you just saw something move. You start to see some antlers peak around the corner and you're thinking it's just a deer. The antlers start to move up the side of the tree from 4 feet off the ground to 8 then 15. Whatever that is it sure isn't a deer. Then as you start to think about running the rest of the creature comes around the corner starting at its long slender legs, followed by human like arms and abnormally large hands that look more accustomed to claws. Then finally its head, its eyes are glowing through the dark the same way as if they were burning similar to that of a fire. It lets out another roar as it has found its prey. Without hesitation and adrenaline pumping through your body, you throw the axe at the creature nailing it in the head knowing it wouldn't do anything other than to buy you time. As the creature is stunned you book it back to the cabin and you can hear the music and rustling from the creature behind you. But alas, there's nothing you can do, it specifically baited you here for one purpose, to devour you. So how do you plan on making it out of this alive? You continue running from the creature but it's not striking at you (yet). Reader, I swear I saw that same rock a few minutes ago. You recognize this as well and you fall into despair and full of terror you know you've been running in circles. Then it finally pounces on you and with one swift strike! You feel nothing. You can't feel anything. The end

You looked down from the hill at your tribe. You were a werewolf, the son of the local chief. Now you commanded a large force of a mishmash of creatures. Most of them were werewolves, alongside some elves, dwarves, humans, golems, liches, vampires, greenskin and even a few rogue wendigos. The reason you were United? The Wendigo horde. Recently the king of the wendigos, alongside any other suitable heir to the throne, was murdered and usurped by his son, who was dying of a disease of the lung. The Prince, desperate not to be forgotten by time before he breathed his last, decided to launch a selfish campaign to kill every living being he could. While he doubted his success, he Knew he could leave enough damage that could never heal. Wendigos we’re a naturally bloodthirsty race, so many of them offered to join. However, he still met resistance from other, more reasonable members of his kind. He killed all he could and the rest escaped to warn the other races. Within a short time the wendigos advanced considerably. They learned how to brew potions, smelt iron and then steel, and even enchant their weapons. They also would learn from other races and steal their technology as their own. Within months, they had wrecked and pillaged most of the other races, terrifying the kinder races and disgusting the more evil ones. And that brings you here. Your father was murdered by the Prince himself. Struck down when he ran back to rescue your sister and his infant daughter… and saw the Prince devouring her from her crib. This sent your father into a rage but the Prince just brandished a blade and stabbed him over and over, and left him to bleed out. He even made him stare at his deceased wife, and whispered over and over in his ear that “You couldn’t save them. You couldn’t save them.” At least that’s what the house gnome, who had been hiding under the bed and who was your father’s friend for years, told you. He recently redeemed himself for his cowardice, by saving some school children By offering himself to the horde. The Wendigos fought with cowardice, striking in the dark of the night, and fleeing from danger when it came. However these tactics worked, and they inflicted heavy casualties while receiving relatively few losses. As a result you and your shrinking army stayed bunkered down at a large abandoned fortress that had been made refuge by some bandits, who easily joined your army. Reinforcements came on occasion and there was a nearby village but you still felt uneasy. You had to watch as your home was burnt to a crisp and slaughtered by the horde. Night strike as your force had reinforced the walls best they could, but the cries and swears of the horde still kept you up. You decided to make four campfires for every man to make your army appear larger and to keep the wendigos at bay but according to your sole remaining scout, the wendigos still had 8 times more fires. You ate well that night, like it was your last meal, and felt utter silence. When a injured troll, who had been scratched badly went around screaming “WENDIGO ATTACK!” You looked out and saw them swarming, and felt a rock hit you in the head… ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You were a wendigo, a young one, who had been drafted into the army to help the war effort. You knew it was a doomed cause but you had no choice. Your family spoke out against it, and they were killed for their pains. It happened quite a bit. Your troop had recently finished destroying a village. You took the plunder and weapons and massacred every living thing. The men, women, even the children and elderly. Not even the pets made it. The Prince went to the troop, looking at them sinisterly. He went to your leader, a ruthless one but who had a soft spot for animals. He asked if everything was dead, and the leader nodded. “Even the pets?” He asked. The leader froze as the Prince lifted his shirt and revealed he was hiding a kitten. The Prince grabbed the kitten and it mewed, pawing at his face, with zero malice and hoping to just make a friend. The Prince smashed it in its hands and strangled the leader right then and there in front of you. He then croaked his orders. “There is a abandoned fortress nearby, made refuge by some resistance. Kill every last one.” That’s about the only order you ever received, to kill every last one. One Wendigo next to you, too sadistic for his own good, began roaring with excitement. Within seconds the Prince threw a knife at him and you were covered with blood. On the March, you stared blankly ahead. You knew sooner than later you would be killed in battle, in service of a madman, rather than find a wife, grow old, and have children. You didn’t want to die in a needless war, but you would die regardless. You made it to the fortress, but a cloud of arrows appeared and they were heading right for you…

With this I could image an animation about this Sargent being sent to North America almost Canada, to figure out the random disappearances, and then coming across the cabin he was sent to live at, after a few days at the cabin that’s when the Wendigo strikes for them to be its next victim of over 100+ people. (This story was so bad!, but I could imagine a chase scene)
@Film0Graphic9 ай бұрын
I actually kinda like that idea, could be interesting to see how a Sergeant would last a night with the cannibalistic creature outside, fighting it off with nothing but the resources he has at hand. Like at first he's using his weapons and slowly reports to more primal means to fend it off when he runs out of ammo. Eventually leading to a standoff/chase in the woods

This piece feels directly ((and quite deftly!)) inspired from the OST/score for the horror film *_'Ravenous'_* ((c. 1999)) by Damon Albarn and Michael Nyman. The film is an alternate -- and 'damn chilling! -- take upon the Wendigo myth... Personally, [ the film ] is one of my all-time favorites... I cannot recommend it highly enough for anyone even casually into horror films. This piece feels like it could've been a 'lost'/discarded track from the film's OST. *_WELL DONE!!_*

You let out a small whistle, like a coin to the beggar. Sure, you’ve heard the legends, but you were never superstitious. Until you heard it. It was a simple whistle back, continuing your tune. You hear a branch snap off in the distance. Grabbing your shotgun, you point it at the direction the sound came from. Must just be some stupid kids, you tell yourself. Until you hear more. You hear whistles coming from all around you, everywhere around your small clearing, like a cacophony of nightmarish horror. Then you see it. Standing just enough in the light that you can see it’s silhouette, but just far enough to lack detail. It was tall, you got that much, taller than you. The worst part? The thing had antlers, enormous ones. From the thing’s maw came a simple tune. A simple whistle, the ending of the song you began. Then it went silent

Idk if it’s not a monster that represents the horrific nature of cannibalism and the idea that cannibalism will convert you into a monster (figuratively and literally), then it’s not a Wendigo. Just make it about the Hide Behind or the Hodag or some other monster from American folklore like the Snallygaster.

I think the perfect creature to be a stand-in for this deer version of the wendigo is the Not Deer, a cryptid that is supposed to look like a deer that is carnivous and can stand up. It actually comes from deer with Chronic Wasting Disease.

Had an idea when listening to this, for the game I'm currently making, I'll add my own depiction of wendios, they will appear as animals that are prey at first, squirrels, bunnies, mice, for some smaller ones, then they shapeshift and distort every feature, growing nightmarish teeth and tongue. And will play this after each time they reveal themselves to attack.

Fun Fact: the Wendigo’s is rooted in Native American folk lore although I don’t know which Native American group it belonged to it is said that a Wendigo happens when a human eats human flesh where they will then transform into a Wendigo
@Zo19816 ай бұрын
Ive heard the story! Apparently during winters, when famine was high, they would be so starved that they would resort to cannibalism. Once they eat a human, they can longer eat normal food and they gain a high metabolism so they always look starved. They hunt humans and actually hide in caves or abandoned mines, they store humans there so they can feast when they want. Some stories say they hibernate so they collect people in advance so they don't starve while hibernating!

A creature not unlike that which is depicted exists within a book I'm writing. A failure of greed and the culmination of abusing ancient arts, stuck forever between states of being, forever starving and lost. This song has allowed me to explore another inspiration however, the specialists who hunt such beasts and bury them for all time. Summoned by horn, trekking cross forest desert and snow, saying nothing and dancing with the dirt. They breathe flame as the ancient scaled beasts once did, and have mastered the magical arts of numerous species in the name of protecting others from these unnatural abominations.

[A story about a D&D party] In the heart of a dense forest, where the trees whispered ancient secrets and the shadows danced with eerie delight, a daring trio ventured forth on a quest that would test their courage like never before. The group consisted of Thalia, the cunning thief with nimble fingers and a quick wit; Roland, the fearless fighter whose strength was matched only by his loyalty; and Aria, the mage whose arcane powers crackled with untamed energy. Their journey began like any other, with promises of treasure and glory spurring them forward. But their path took a sinister turn when they stumbled upon the lair of a wendigo, a creature of darkness and despair, its hunger for flesh insatiable and its rage unyielding. As the wendigo emerged from the shadows, its monstrous form towering over them, the party knew they were facing a foe unlike any they had encountered before. With Thalia's deft hands, they managed to evade the creature's initial onslaught, darting through the trees with the wendigo's furious roars echoing behind them. But the wendigo was relentless, its wrath fueled by centuries of loneliness and pain. Each time they thought they had lost it, it would find them again, its icy breath chilling them to the bone and its claws tearing through the underbrush. In moments of respite, Roland would stand his ground, his sword gleaming in the moonlight as he faced the creature head-on, buying precious seconds for Thalia and Aria to plan their next move. Aria, her voice trembling with power, unleashed torrents of flame and frost upon their adversary, each spell pushing the wendigo back but never quite defeating it. As the night wore on and exhaustion threatened to consume them, the party refused to surrender to despair. With grit and determination, they fought on, drawing strength from each other's bravery and refusing to let fear dictate their fate. And so, against all odds, the thief, the fighter, and the mage pressed onward, their bond forged in the crucible of battle and their spirits unbroken by the horrors that lurked in the shadows. Though the wendigo may have been relentless, they were determined to prove that even the darkest of nights could not extinguish the light of courage and friendship.

I just thought of a scenario for this song. It starts with two wendigos circling each other and doing little slashes at each other. And natives are in the woods around them, playing the song
