In this video I visited a lovely little castle in the Gower Peninsula - Weobley Castle. It is a castle with a beautiful view over Carmarthen Bay, you can see for miles! I was the only one visiting at this particular time of day, so I took the time to explore its alcoves, halls, and rooms.
The castle was built ~700 years ago by the De La Bere family, to entertain and schmooze with important people; there is a lot to suggest the castle had all the modern conveniences of its time, it would have been ostentatious and full of splendour in its prime.
There is also a watchtower, with battlement, which suggests although this place would have been extravagant, it would also have needed defending.
However, during the Glyndŵr rebellion, led by Owain Glyndŵr against the Kingdom of England in the 15th century, Owain managed to capture most of the main castles in Wales, and Weobley Castle was seriously damaged. Now it is a ruin, and curated as a reminder of the rich history of this area.
