The wera Koloss is a ratchet and hammer combined into one tool, whilst this may be useful on some jobs it is not ideal on lots of jobs. The written review with pictures can be seen here- www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/for...

Actually, this would come in very handy for my job. I set up and operate Cincinnati press brakes where I work, and one thing I often have to do is set up a front support for a side gauge to help correctly position the part I'm going to form. These supports run in a dovetail groove in the front of the bed below the bridge, and I've often had to tap them into position (they often have to be positioned precisely) before the final torque-down. We're talking about a 30 to 40-pound (around 15 kg) chunk of metal here. Admittedly, I impatiently got into the habit of using the 15/16" GearWrench which was already in my hand to do this, in order to save time by not switching tools (there is a rate on the setups). My first GearWrench did not hold up from this and the ratchet part became unusable, so I traded it for a new one (thankfully Sears honored the lifetime warranty). This tool would be able to take the blows without destroying the ratcheting system, and I wouldn't have to constantly keep switching tools whenever I want to fine-tune the position of the supports.

This is a really good idea, it won't replaceiany tools in a mechanics toolbox, but if the strike places reduce impact damage, then the tool will have a longer life. All ratchets this size end up being used as a hammer.

I bought this back in 2010 or 11 to use while working at a lineman's helper - It's a cool idea but I found myself using a normal 1/2" drive Craftsman Professional instead - because I needed to carry a real hammer on me 90% of the time anyway. The issue I had with using it as a hammer was that the weight of the socket made it unbalanced when striking and it would rotate and glance-off of whatever you were trying to hit. This could be minimized by taking off the socket, but it would just be quicker and easier to grab the hammer from your belt loop instead. Still, it's a really high-quality wrench - it now lives in my pickup truck toolbox and I mostly use it for lug nuts or other random jobs.

I would love to try it on a rusted rounded off turbo bolt on exhaust manifold on 5.9 cummins diesel truck
@mrmike63637 жыл бұрын
it would be better if the hammer part was at the back of the drive, that way you could hit the ratchet inline with the bolt. its a good way of removing stuburn bolts, so the ratchet becomes an impact ratchet when needed

Steel erectors normally have specific tools such as ratchet spanners with a podger on the end, but I guess it would be useful for some people! Thanks for the comment

It is wary handy if you are installing fence with bolts, many do use there ratchet as a hammer if the bolt doesn't go lightly in.

Not sure of the purpose of this tool when i first came across it , thought maybe if a rounded nut or bolt needed a socket hammered on to so it can be removed.
@mikenormandy92502 жыл бұрын
Plenty of uses, esp if you're building any securing structures or racking....Like for example, in this video, he uses it to set a lag bolt into a concrete anchor, prob a double expansion anchor, then use the socket drive to send the bolt home and tighten up the double expansion anchor....This would also be PERFECT for setting electrical piping racks, or mounting any panels or switch gears....Anything where you are setting drop-in or expansion anchors to mount items, this is PERFECT. Iron/steel workers would LOVE this as well for building Jersey barriers on the roads....or any steel structure where you have to line up eyes for bolts....
@Professional_Youtube_Commenter5 жыл бұрын
i guess this is useful for 1 or two specfic jobs and it's an absolute godsend in that field, somewhere where you need to hammer and ratchet a nut in where it's not possible to have access to or carry loads of tools. Think of perhaps up a telephone pole, where carring a long ratchet and hammer might be a chore and one tool that does both is perfect.

When I was building (safway systems back in 08) most of the guys just had the snap on scaffold ratchet. Its has a rubber hammer on the back and a fixed 7/8 socket. I was lucky to get one with a replaceable hammer so I not only had the rubber but I also had a bronze. Another popular ratchet for scaffold builders is the tubelox tho I think its junk but if you worked on any government site (in the us) you would get them for free.

its not a bad idea though, but indeed its too big for a rachet. The only thing it could be good for is being a breaker bar. But you would need to use deep sockets because of the larger width of the head.

Can't count how many ratchets I've destroyed by using it as a hammer. I've mostly learned my lesson tho and started to carry a hammer in my toolbox.. Still, sometimes I'm in a real hurry and won't spend the minute to go get it, and then the ratchet is the next best thing.

I think this tool is made for assembling scaffolds. for some parts you need the ratchet but for the most parts you use the hammer to secure the parts on modern steel scaffolds.
@ultimatehandyman10 жыл бұрын
Most scaffolder's I have seen use a special scaffolding spanner, some even use small impact wrenches now.. One problem is fixing the tool to the harness via a lanyard then it can't fall and kill someone if it is dropped. Not sure who this ratchet is aimed at, perhaps people who install road barriers all day long? Thanks for the comment
@YouloveTj10 жыл бұрын
Not really very useful if your both tightening and loosening - having to take the socket off to reverse seems like a bit of a design flaw there
@pubbiehive8 жыл бұрын
+tom h that's a feature, lot's of ratchets do this, it's so that you won't mistakenly switch directions while you're driving a bolt in/out.
