+Robert Mackrell well, here's what I know, and I think many other people know as well: the main infantry weapons of World War 2 were bolt action or semi-automatic rifles and submachine guns. Something like an assault rifle was unheard of (aside from earlier weapons being tried out, like the Russian-made Fedorov Avtomat back in 1915, but there's a debate over whether it should be classified as a light machine gun or a predecessor to the assault rifle, or even a true assault rifle in its own right). So, think of what an assault rifle would do for logistics and warfare on the German side. With such a weapon, you had range and automatic fire, in short, the scaled-down power of the bulky machine gun wrapped up into the size of a typical rifle. A soldier could switch to semi-auto to fire at more distant enemies or switch to fully-auto to clear out buildings or fight at mid-range. It's a logistical dream, one that many nations have adapted to today by producing their own assault rifles. Such a thing means the soldier would no longer need to carry two guns for separate purposes, but would have the same power in one weapon. To clarify on what that power is, a submachine gun fires pistol ammunition, giving it great power up close but less and less the further the target is, as the rounds simply can't reach the same ranges as a rifle can. Bolt-action rifles fire much larger rounds that can go further, but lack the quick rate of fire of a submachine gun, making it unsuitable to use in close quarters. Semi-automatic rifles somewhat remedied this problem, but mainly upped the amount of rounds a soldier could put downrange, and were still highly unsuitable for CQB operations. With an assault rifle, you get both in one gun, with the cost of a slightly downsized cartridge to make automatic fire easier to handle. If you don't think the STG in greater numbers among the German Army would help at a time where most nation's main battle rifle was the same bolt-action rifle they'd used in the previous world war (semi-automatics were around since before the Great War, but were generally viewed as being unstable, and it was thought that soldiers would simply fire off all their ammunition instead of complying with the protocol of volley fire. This is why the British army had concerns with adopting the Lee-Metford over the breech-loading Martini-Henry, they were worried that the men would panic and fire all their rounds, and they'd lose control over the army), then you sir have no place telling me that it wouldn't do anything to lead to the dreaded German victory. It took over half of the world to stop them as it is, just one tiny nation in Europe, with his Italian meat shield and his Japanese friends in the east. And if you think I'm advocating for the Nazis, know that I'm not. It's simply a speculative situation. There usually exists all kinds of speculative situations in which the loser of a war could have won had he done something different. As for the illegality of the cartridge, Hitler himself banned them from use, stating personal distaste with the use of Kurz ammunition. And I'm the only one who's listed a source so far, I have yet to see you list one yourself.

+Robert Mackrell I'd think the fact that the early German assault rifle platforms (basically the STG with a different name, and with a few changes in design) were mainly used for the Eastern Front would mean some would have fallen in Russian hands, being captured from dead Germans. Plus, just because the initial designs began in 1941 doesn't mean the intermediate cartridge couldn't be introduced later. Also, earlier designs, like the Fedorov Avtomat, didn't use intermediate cartridges. The Russian Fedorov used 7.62x54mmR, the same ammunition used by the Mosin Nagant. The American BAR used the same 30.06 as the Garand and Springfield. The French Chauchat used 8mm Lebel. In each of these, the recoil was far greater than that of a true assault rifle, despite being of a similar size to be used as one. The STG was the first true assault rifle, rather than an LMG that was more rifle-shaped and could be carried and operated by a single soldier. That intermediate cartridge makes all the difference, with recoil lessened so it could be fired much like an SMG, but with more power and range. The lessened recoil provides more accuracy. And that cartridge was, at the time, the Kurz round. There wasn't really anything else to use other than that, and I think the number of captured STGs used by the Red Army would certainly allow at least a few of the cartridges to be studied and a new intermediate cartridge be produced from the research.

Most blasters couldn’t penetrate their armor. The armor would help to absorb the energy, making the laser non lethal, but it would still knock them out. That’s why Ewoks and Chirrut are so effective against them, because sticks and stones would cause their fragile organic bodies to slosh around inside the armor, breaking bones and rupturing organs. Fun stuff!

Stormtrooper armor as actually rather powerful: the Majority of blasters would simply have the heat from the shot spread out via the armor. As a result, Stormtroopers would usually only be knocked out- slightly wounded at most- by the majority of blasters. So while they may be more likely to be incapacitated, as their armor doesn't totally block the shot, they were much more likely to surrvive.

If you ask me, I think America is a bit more lenient in most places in the country compared to the Empire, as even in many highly urban areas here in the United States you can get a gun as easily as a more rural area. However, they are very similar as in poorer and more rural regions of the galaxy tend to have more lenient regulations, just like poorer and more rural states in the U.S tend to have more lenient gun laws. And the richer and more urbanized you go, the stricter the laws are. Which makes sense for a galaxy as vast as Star Wars, less so here in the United States.

No matter what you do, people will still get their hands on weapons because a government on a galactic scale simply doesn't have the power to exert its laws onto literally every part of the Galaxy, hell there's large swaths of the galaxy which are unexplored. That's different than our own world.

Not true. Key word here is lethally, most stormtroopers shot by sidearms were downed but not killed, they are seen still moving, actual military weapons like the AC80 rifle which can kill stormtroopers even with their armor. Whereas slug throwers are ineffective.
