Arguably no other shapeshifter in mythology is as famous or terrifying as the werewolf. But the concept of cursed individuals transforming into animals or animal-like monsters is not limited to the wolf. In places where wolves aren't found, other werebeasts have crawled forth from scary stories. Werejaguars from South America, werehyenas from Africa, weretigers from Asia, and more! This program will discuss some of the most fearsome werebeasts of mythology!

Honestly out of all the were-species the weretiger is the most powerful and terrifying to me. @Brandon Springfield I know how big bears, especially Kodiak bears, can get. However, it's also a fact that all cats reliably hunt animals that are not only bigger than themselves by a decent amount but are also heavier. One of the tigers' main food sources is water Buffalo, which can weigh on average in the wild from 1,500 up to 2,200 pounds, which is much heavier than the Kodiak bear on average in the wild

Here in the Philippines, we have creatures that we call as 'Tikbalang' they were like centaurs of Greek myth but in reverse. They have head of a horse and a body of a man. They were also depicted as a horse/human hybrid, depending on the source. They were thought of misguiding travelers at night and eventually eating them.

I am from Northeast India and we have folklore of such creature old people use to believe that there is this weretiger like creature. A man went to sleep but his spirit roam around he transforms into a humanoid tiger or weretiger, he will hunt and eat everything he sees. He cannot be killed because he is just a spirit but if someone manage to find the body of the sleeping and kill him. Both the spirit and the man dies. The man has no aware of what his spirit has done when he is sleeping he feels tired and pain when he woke up.

Speaking of werefolk, one of my favorite series is the old MTV series Teen Wolf. Has everything from werewolves to Japanese oni in it. And I always thought that Kira was a better match to Scott than Allison. As Kira, being a kitsune could legitimately fight alongside Scott at the same level. Plus her accelerated healing factor allows her to survive wounds that would kill any normal human. Also when the oni were introduced, the "translation" of the kanji is actually incorrect. 己 Romanji onore means myself, not self. Self in Japanese is 自己 Romanji jiko.

I'm an old lady now, but when I was studying zoology in Kenya about 50 years ago, I met a middle aged German woman who became a friend of mine. She told me, that during a night ceremony with some bush peoples, she saw a man turn into a hyena. When I laughed at her, she became very angry and emphatically said "I have zeen it! I have zeen it!" This woman was quite sane and there weren't drugs involved. I don't know what my friend saw, but I never questioned her after that. I've also seen a film called "Hisssss"" about a woman-snake deity in India. Note 5 S's rather than 7 S's which is another movie all together. The one with 7 S's is an older, but frightening film about a evil doctor who turns people into snakes. Check them out.

The other day, I was hearing a podcast and they were questioning the possibility of the Egyptian pantheon of gods being real, to some extent, and then they kind off crossed to the werebeasts and most of the cryptids that we seem to hunt to this day. Were Ravens, Were Sharks, Were Sheep and Were Seals are some of the unique types among the common ones mentioned in this video. There's also Jackalweres, a jackal who shape changes into a human or hybrid. There's even a were dragon in D&D as well. DC comics even has King Shark, a creature similar to a were shark, but permanently in hybrid form. Lycanthropes are very mysterious and interesting creatures. I wish film makers could stop creating reboots of most already made films and start introducing some were creatures, OTHER THAN WEREWOLVES, into the movies!!!

Werebeasts or Therianthropes, are amongst the oldest and most powerful paranormal beings/people within the world. For several thousand years, these weres or therians they have been the stuff of legends as there are few beings they can barely even match their power and spirit, being kin to the great beasts they're mystically/spiritual bonded to. Some legends say these beings like vampires are gifted eternal youth/life and become even more powerful with the passage of time. And these legends possibly date back to when people drew/painted/told stories in caves as depicts people turning into animals. With the werewolf likely being the oldest and most powerful of all the weres and therians.

@@johnnymason2460 I don't know if a werelion would neccesarily be sexually aggressive. On one hand, actual African lions live in a patriarchal society, which might make them less aggressive. On the other hand, Asiatic lionesses (which are way less patriarchal) are insanely horny when in heat and can initiate intercoarse dozens of times in a single day (not sure if African lions are as bad.) So which kind of lion is involved would likely have some effect. As for hyenas, I'd say aggressive streak would be putting it mildly considering their social structures - especially if you were dealing with one of the higher ranking females. Then anatomically there's also the whole pseudopenis situation - at least with spotted hyenes - striped hyenas have more conventional reproductive anatomy... WEREBEASTS!!!! YAS! So, so glad to see this uploaded. Needed something to help me wind down, after a long and stressful work day. To read the little note on the video, concerning weretigers, I never heard of the idea that (in some traditions) a weretiger forms when a tiger eats too many people. That's a new one to me for sure! The wereowl is new to me. I'm used to hearing about magic users shape shifting into an owl as example. And it's undead too? Oh my! I can use this video for reference with my writings, and of course always will I give credit.

Therianthropes, or 'Werebeasts', also includes Lycanthropes(Werewolves/Wargs), not just shapeshifters outside the canid variety. Not a criticism btw, just adding to the info. Great video 👍

The werejaguar content strongly reminded me of Kate Argent in teen wolf season 4. She was great, i love her so much. Peter killed her at the end of season 1, but excidently turned her because his claws dug to deep into her flesh. But it is still assumed that she is a malformed werewolve. Since the transformation often reflects the persons character. And Kate is aggressive and merciless, just like a jaguar.

If it's an animal there is probably a Werecreature about it. Their is said to even be Weredinosaurs but they are rare.

In modern popular culture (and especially in Internet fandoms), literally ANYTHING can be the basis for a were-creature. Dinosaurs? Dragons? _Pokemon?_ Yes, it exists. Just ... be careful what you type into search engines....

I just thought of something; To be a Were-Beast, one must be a human who turns into an animal (or vise versa) either by there own will or by a curse If that is the case, then doesn't that make Selkies Were-Seals?
