Ted is a Marvel comics character known as Man-Thing. He was a human scientist named Theodore “Ted” Sallis. He changed after he injected himself with an experimental serum (to keep it away from nefarious people chasing him), and his car crashed in a swamp, causing a change in his biology to something plantlike. He’s unable to speak normally, but is strongly empathic (a bit like Groot, but he can’t verbalize). Being so empathic, he releases a chemical reaction in response in negative emotions, mainly fear, which is what caused those hunters to literally burn and disintegrate in his hands. The comics often used the phrase “whatever knows fear burns at the Man Thing’s touch”. A similar character in DC Comics is called the Swamp Thing, although that character is verbal, and shown to be more intellectual, whereas “Ted” is more instinctive.

@maxnorton1209

@@oddish3022 Both are, to different degrees. Swamp Thing is also “Protector of the Green”, and is basically connected to all natural life (plants, earth, etc.) everywhere on Earth (and possibly on other planets and planes of existence). He can control them for offensive and defensive purposes as well.

I think that Man-Thing was also strategically put in this to be used in the future. The swamp he protects is also a Nexus to reality. There you can move threw different universes. A handy use to get to Kang.

My favorite thing about reactions to this is how everyone reacts the same way to the bomb shenanigans when it won't stick to the wall. I just want to make a supercut of different reactors yelling "PUT IT IN THE CRACK!" And this isn't just the first MCU Special Presentation you're seeing, it was the first one ever. There's still only two, the other one is the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which you should watch before you get to Guardians 3, even if it's not Christmastime.

I figure that had to be deliberate, with the writers knowing exactly what people would shout out in that instance.

Marvel has many versions of all the classic Universal monsters: vampires, werewolves, mummies, swamp creatures, Frankenstein. They’re often on teams together in the comics like the Midnight Sons or the “Howling” Commandos. A lot of people are looking forward to Jack and Ted crossing over with Moon Knight and the upcoming MCU version of Blade. It’s not known if there’s an MCU Frankenstein or other reanimated corpse character in the future. Sometimes, in the comics, Punisher dies and is turned into Frankencastle for the team.

While this is a Standalone TV Movie, it is still tied to the MCU since Man-Thing (Ted) had a super brief cameo way back in Ragnarok. He was one of the heads on the Tower in Sakaar (where we found Hulk). In Clockwise from the top the characters are: Hulk, Ares, Bi-Beast, Man-Thing (Ted), Dark Crawler, and Beta-Ray Bill. Ares is of course the Greek God of War, in the Comics he was an enemy of Thor and the Avengers but became an Anti-Hero, hasn't appeared in the MCU outside of Ragnarok, same with the others outside of Hulk and Ted. Bi-Beast is a Robot made by "Bird People" but the Bird People all died out and left Bi-Beast to his own devices. Dark Crawler is an enemy of Hulk in the sense that these ancient beings called "Undying Ones" sent Hulk to Dark Crawler's dimension hoping he would kill Crawler. Crawler's weapon was destroyed, they got sent to the Undying Ones, Crawler killed and became their leader while Hulk escaped with Dr. Strange. Beta-Ray Bill is a Korbinite who's home was destroyed by Surtur, and had to flee in his ship with his remaining people in their ships. Bill's ship was overun by Surtur's forces which Bill opened the airlock and nearly died but was saved by a passing Nova Centurion. As their fleet approached the Milky Way, Nick Fury detected it and had Thor go to the ship to see what's going on. The ship saw Thor as a threat so Bill and Thor fought. Thor was separated from his hammer causing him to revert to "Don Blake", Bill then knocked him out. Bill was curious about the Hammer and picked it up gaining the power of Thor. Bill's ship landed on Earth but Odin transported him and Thor to Asgard. They had a battle to the death, Bill won but refused to kill Thor. Proving Odin right by deeming Bill worthy.

This was the directorial debut of Michael Giachino, one of the best score composers in Hollywood, responsible for some of the very best main themes ever, he's written multiple for Pixar, (The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and Up) he wrote the score for Rogue One, (In only a few weeks, which is an accomplishment on its own) The Doctor Strange theme, he's even written the music that plays during the Marvel intro. As an aspiring filmmaker and score composer myself, his story is really amazing and now I want him to direct every MCU project

Werewolf By Night is a creation of Roy Thomas and Mike Ploog although the title was pure Stan Lee. The character made his first appearance in Marvel Spotlight vol. 1 #2 in February of 1972. Marvel was going through a monster phase at the time with titles like Tomb of Dracula which spawned the Blade franchise as a vampire hunter, Ghost Rider (Johnny Blaze), Son of Satan featuring Damien Hellstrom. So having a werewolf was no big jump. Moon Knight was created as a foe of Werewolf By Night and had his first appearance in Werewolf By Night vol. 1 #32. Ghost Rider made his first appearance in Marvel Spotlight vol. 1 #5. 😅

Werewolf By Night used to be a monthly Marvel comic in their horror line, which also included Tomb Of Dracula. Those series introduced us to 2 now-iconic Marvel characters: Moon Knight (in WbN), and Blade (in ToD). Both were antagonists to the title characters. Dracula went on to become a major X-Men villain, Moon Knight eventually got his own series & recurring appearances, and Blade… well, we all know that one. But poor Werewolf By Night got left behind. I was really glad to see him brought back for this show, and I hope we’ll see him again. Elsa Bloodstone was supposedly going to be in the new Blade movie, but who knows with the strike & such how that will turn out.

@@emme Thought I'd answer why you thought the werewolf looked different than what people today think of what a werewolf looks like, the simple truth is that werewolves used to look like that before they changed them which you can see for example in black and white movies in the past and this character was created in this era when werewolves looked like he does here.

The whole movie was done kind of tongue-in -cheek! A jack russell, as you know is a small breed of dog, a sub breed of terrier. Jack is a nickname for John. John was the name of the wolfman from the movie "The Wolf Man" (1941). I also see what you did a few times (intentionally or not...) "She's going to use his "hand" weapon" referring to the mini-crossbow still attached to Liorn's hand, and "We love Aunt Francis for that... thinking "ahead" just after her head was literally removed by Elsa! I wish I could see Laura Donnelly (Elsa) in more things! She is a wonderful actress and has had some pretty good action roles as well.... She played Amalia True in HBO's The Nevers, where she played the incarnation of a soldier. I thought that was a pretty good show, but her character was a highlight!

Hey, Emme! ULYSSES BLOODSTONE was a prehistoric man who came into possession of a fragment of the Bloodstone which embedded itself in his chest. The gem is an alien artifact from another dimension that protectively encased an evil intelligence called the Hellfire Helix capable of creating monstrous guardians. One such guardian destroyed Ulysses' entire tribe. For 10,000 years, he hunted the Bloodstone's guardians to avenge his tribe and psionically vanquished the Helix within the stone in the 20th-century. Having fulfilled his goal, he removed the fragment from his chest and aged instantly to dust. The uninhabited stone still has the power to amplify energy, heal, emit energy and repel monsters. It is now possessed by Ulysses' daughter, ELSA BLOODSTONE. JACK RUSSELL is the WEREWOLF BY NIGHT, the Wolfman of the Marvel Universe. He fought the vampiric-looking man-bat trophy mounted in the chamber because werewolves and vampires are mortal enemies. MOON KNIGHT started off in the comics as a werewolf hunter and traded blows with Jack more than once! TED SALLIS is the MAN-THING, a former biochemist who has lost his intelligence after merging with a mystical swamp while injected with a sulfur-based regenerative serum with which he was experimenting. He responds to anger, hate and fear by secreting sulfuric acid that severely burns those he touches. He is gentle with those who have no ill intent and who are not afraid of him. The portion of the Everglades he protects is known as THE NEXUS OF ALL REALITIES and Man-Thing can create portals to alternate realities as well as teleport to locations he has seen. Man-Thing has been a member of the THUNDERBOLTS and all three characters have been members of the MIDNIGHT SONS along with BLADE, MORBIUS, FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER, GHOST RIDER, HELLSTROM, JENNIFER KALE and BROTHER VOODOO! The special was emulating the black-and-white Universal horror cycle of the 1930s and 1940s starring the likes of Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, Jr., Claude Rains and John Carradine even though it was set in 2025. GAEL GARCIA BERNAL is part of the 1990s Mexican Renaissance that includes DIEGO LUNA, DEMIAN BICHIR, SALMA HAYEK, ALFONSO CUARON, ALEJANDRO GONZALEZ INARRITU and GUILLERMO DEL TORO. LAURA DONNELLY is from "The Nevers" and "Outlander". The first color film to use three-strip Technicolor for the length of the feature was "Becky Sharp" in 1935!

Maybe a Doctor Strange movie, or the Agatha series. I hope so. I loved all 3 characters in this special. Man-Thing (Ted), Jack, and Elsa. They got potential here.

Man-Thing was created about the same time as Swamp Thing. One of the creators of Man-Thing was room mates with the creator of Swamp Thing (Len Wein). Len also wrote the second story for Man-Thing. Swamp Thing is better known mainly because of the run written by Alan Moore. Bobbi Moore (better known as Mockingbird) was created in the Man-Thing comic although released earlier

Both Jack Russel and “Ted” are Marvel comic characters. From what I’ve been told in the past this is from Marvel’s horror era before they started doing Superhero’s?( I think). But the filming style and the werewolf design and all of that is based on classic horror films, specifically “The Wolfman” ( 1947 I want to say) and other werewolf films over time. It’s part of the reason that fans love this and it was such a big hit for Marvel because not only is it different than expected Marvel content but it pays homage to old horror favorites. There’s also a version of this in color now, nothing else different, but you can watch that on your own time. There’s probably comparison compilations on KZfaq by now.

Ted is a Marvel character known as The Man-Thing, and his tag line is, "Those who know fear burn at the touch of The Man-Thing". He has a long history in Marvel Comics, I don't know for sure, but I think he might have come the 50s when a lot of comics companies started cutting down on superhero themed comics and putting out horror stories, right between the Golden Age and the Silver Age of comics, Marvel might have been Atlas Comics at that time, they were called Timely Comics in the 40s.

Yeah, I did go and get this information because I was only speculating, he indeed premiered in Savage Tales #1 in 1971. Swamp Thing in DC Comics was introduced in 1972, but isn't considered a rip-off because both were inspired by a character from Eclipse Comics from the 1940s called The Heap.

Marvel Studios' badass special was also excellent, brutal, and creepy. I enjoyed King Kong (1933), The Wolf Man (1941), Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), Poltergeist (1982), and Werewolf By Night's Twilight Zone influences. I admired Jack Russell and Ted" Sallis' friendship as well. Michael Giacchino directed and composed this special brilliantly. Jack and Elsa have a great chemistry. Werewolf By Night, Elsa Bloodstone, and Man-Thing are all distinct individuals. This special's deaths were fantastic. The transformation from black and white to color was stunning. Since 1993, I have been a fan of Werewolf By Night. I've been a Man-Thing fan since 1991. Werewolf By Night was a unique and refreshing take on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was dark, atmospheric, and genuinely scary at times. The performances were all excellent, and the special effects were top-notch. I especially loved the black-and-white aesthetic, which gave the film a classic monster movie vibe. I'm excited to see what Marvel Studios does next with the monster side of the MCU. Werewolf By Night is a great start, and I can't wait to see more.

We are slowly getting Marvel's team the Midnight Suns. It is a supernatural team. We got Man-Thing, Jack the Werewolf by Night, Dr. Strange, Morbious, Blade, Elsa Bloodston. I feel we need Brother Voodoo instead of Dr. Strange though. We kinda got one version of Brother Voodoo/Daniel Drumm in the first DR. Strange picture (he was the guy garding the sanctum that was killed by Kaecilius.) But in the comics his little brother also becomes a hogun (sorcerer) and continues the on with the name Doctor Voodoo.

I have mixed feelings towards this movie. It's properly good and enjoyable, but the Elsa Bloodstone in this movie really doesn't feel a whole lot like the one from the comics. Over there she's a bombastic gunslinging action hero who's far enough apart from the atmosphere of this movie that she got to be in colour throughout the recent black-and-white Werewolf by Night one-shot. Like her whole throughline in that book was to present a counterpoint to the melancholy and melodramatic tone of that old school flavour of story (and Jack's internal monologue). Not for a second saying it's bad or that there's anything wrong with it, but as a fan of the character from the comics it's a bit jarring, you know?

13:10 "Ted" is actually Theodore Sallis, also known as Man-Thing. He was a scientist involved in the Project Rebirth/Weapon Plus, responsible for creating Captain America and the entire American super-soldier project. He was part of Weapon IV in the creation of an enhanced Captain America serum, which he successfully developed. However, his wife turned out to be a Russian spy who attempted to kill him and steal the serum. Ted then destroyed his research, samples, and laboratory. His wife and Russian spies pursued him, leaving him mortally wounded. It was at this point that he still possessed a sample of the serum, which he mixed with the mystical swamp into which he fell, mutating into a being that connects all the threads of the multiverse with a strength similar to that of Hulk and cosmic powers. He also has the ability to melt anyone who is hostile or fearful of him. He is a great friend of characters like Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Moon Knight, Morlun, and the Howling Commandos.
