🥾 I realised it's only about 7 weeks until I hike the West Highland Way and it's probably time to do some more focused training!
In today's hiking vlog I chat about how I (think!) I might get started - but I definitely recommend swapping out some of your regular 'motorised journeys' to walking. In this one, I'm walking over to a friend's instead of getting the train - a nice easy start.

00:00 - 00:53 - I realised my West Highland Way hike is sooner than I thought so I best think about some training!
00:53 - 01:49 - short walk today, and possibly writing a schedule
01:49 - 03:25 - incorporating your usual journey's into your training plan (eg walk, don't drive)
03:25 - 05:11 - the weather and lovely hedgerows!
05:11 - 06:19 - walk fast to raise your heart rate
06:19 - 06:58 - why I don't run far anymore
06:58 - 10:44 - back to the plan!

When In Scotland vote SNP. Good luck on your hike, it's quite a tough one, especially if you get changeable weather conditions. Im sure you will really enjoy it. All the best.

I'm not a hiker as you know, and this is a hiking channel so sorry for not being on topic, but I don't go in for all the high tech for measuring fitness either. I imagine a lot of hikers, just as with many cyclists, do though, and look at all sorts of metrics and training plans to see how they're doing. Some folk need a rigid training plan to get them going, but that's no fun if you ask me, in fact I'd find it stressful. A loose plan is the way I'd go too - no measuring data (apart from miles done), just getting out there and doing it regularly is what I do to maintain fitness, but I haven't got a specific challenge ahead of me as you have, but I'm sure regular hikes with varying terrain as you mentioned, will see you in good form for the big hike! You love the outdoors Mick! Cycling, running, walking, backpacking... it's all about the same thing, which is just getting out there and having fun 😊I know if I put on a rucksack right now and head onto the WHW I'd be fine and could hike it no problem, but I just want to feel as best I can I suppose. I'm not likely to have the opportunity to go that far north again for some time so it seems like a good idea to be as fit as I can in the next 6 weeks to make sure I enjoy it!

@@stephie_10milehike Yes, you've got me sussed - I do love the outdoors! 😀 Yep, that all makes sense - being the best you can be fitness wise, come the big adventure! Don't over do it mind - you don't want to go copping any injuries just before the off! I'm just back from Perranporth, St Agnes (via Blue Hills 😲), the Saints Trail to Chivvy, then Tregavethan and through the lanes back to sunny St Erme. My word the hill out of Blue Hills is an ugly affair! 🧐 🤣 So I've had a good old ride around (I left at 5 am, hence being back already!) and hope you've had some good walking over the weekend as well. Well i use to just do a lot of walking, i use to live at the bottom of a valley and when i could walk up the hill to get out without stopping and being out of breath i knew i was fitter 😂 one ghing i have noticed with age is the very fast depletion of muscles, i use to be quite naturally strong i miss thst

Always add in hills where you can! I've definitely noticed the muscle loss in my arms as I age. it feels like it's time to get out some weights but I find it hard to do at home (I get all enthusiastic for about a month and then lose motivation). I know I'd be much better going to a gym but I can't afford it 🫤 Do you do any weight-type exercise?

@stephie_10milehike no I'm slack when it comes to routines, try planks, put a sign somewhere, have you done a plank today? 😂 unfortunately they dont seem to offer cardiac rehab in the SW, but i do need to work on my hips, think ive a bit of arthritis happening there

I know right - it just goes to show what making 4 videos of a trail you hate does to you by the end 🤣🤣🤣 Lesson learnt - if I ever do another trail I hate (this has been the only one so far), I won't waste more than one video on it. It's such a relief not to have to think about it ever again haha! Farage? Who the feck's that 🤣🤣
