My Weatie is 10 years. I was happy to hear about your dog being 17 years. He is so loveable but a little crazy.He will not let me out of his light. He knows so much of english and seems to be able to read my thoughts.His name is Butch.

@@gessed He sounds so cute. Sadly our dear old girl passed away last week- 17 years 8 months old. She was dearly loved and brought so much joy to our family and so many friends over the years. We have been pulling out all the photos and videos of her we can find and sharing them around. Make sure you take heaps along the way, give daily exercise and maintain their teeth.

I am sorry and understand. Had 2 Westies...first one lived til age 10, 2nd lived til age 17! Best companions ever. I miss them both, especially my 2nd who was in my life for 14yrs. When/if you are ready, get another Westie. Both of mine were great companions.

@@zealheals She. I mention it because people often mistake her for a male. One of the things I enjoy about my Westie is she doesn't bark much at all. Unless you're a squirrel-then it's game on!

So agree with you, William. My Sparky just passed away last month, and I am just so lost without him. He was the most loving, sweetest and gentle little dog who offered immense levels of comfort. I'd go to sleep, and he would be at the far end of the bed. If I got up in the middle of the night, he was snuggled up in the small of my back. I too, live alone, and I have no doubt that when the time is right that I will get another Westie boy.....and maybe a girl, too.

This is so saddening. I'm sorry for your loss! I can only imagine how you feel. I love my Westie more than most of my own family! My boy means everything to me and I cry like a wuss at the mere thought of ever losing him. He's 7, with lots of allergy issues. I spare no expense at the vet's office to give him quality of life. He's a super happy, strong, brave, and loyal companion!

@@victoriat9084 How did you lose him so soon? My husband and I are purchasing one after much research, we have always had dauchsunds so this is new territory for us. I'm buying from a reputable breeder, but am worried about health since I've read that cancer is somewhat prevalent in this breed. We hike alot and want a pup that can go off leash occasionally we were always able to train our dauchsunds to stay close we have a aussie that helps with that in the beginning, but she is getting old. It's a big decision and just want to get feedback from folks that are familiar with this breed.

@lisa j I’ve never have pets before, even I was scared to be near around dogs, but something happened to me and I decided to get a dog and I got a westie, I bought from a proper breeder as well, my Westie Name is Weeler, when Weeler was 6months we found out that he got locking jaws, he got excess grown jaws, it looks so horrible when I saw the x-ray, the vet said it cant be cure but just to let it stop by itself when he is 1yo and the vet only gave pain killer medicine, it broke my heart to see my pup like that thinking about his pain, when Weeler was 9months I decided to get another Westie for his compagnion and at that time I didnt think at all that the other Westie will get the same issue, I just wanna hv another. So We got this girl and named her Weenona. Before Weeler reach age 2years we spent at least almost AUD10k for vets, not only for his Jaws issue but he has skin issue as well but thank God it wasnt that bad, also in 1 yr he got 2x surgery from grass seed which stuck on his paw, every single days I always check both of them closely, their ears, paws, when I saw him lick one of his paw excessively then I will be suspicious and brought him to vet and whatever that is even only small things I always worry and travel to vets a lots. Different again with Weenona, amazingly she is very healthy girl, I took her to vet only for vaccination and couple of time ear infections and it wasnt that bad, the rest she is fine. Now both of them 5yo and Im so glad both of them are healthy. Compare to some other Westies Weeler it wasnt that bad apart issue with his jaw but its fine now, some other Westie has skin issues but to me all those disease could happen to any other breeds and lots of other Westies are perfectly fine like my pups besties Sandy, Robbie and Jamie the other westies, but to be honest to train them is one big Good Luck as they are very stubborn 😅 they trained me 🙈

lisa j I have a westie her names Misty. She’s never had anything wrong with her except worms and that’s fixed easily, she’s 3 years old at the moment. I don’t know how easy they are to train to stay close as we don’t really hike. Misty knows how to sit and stay there. Though these dogs love their owners and are not very scared of things. When I got misty I took her on her first walk and accidentally dropped the lead I ran after her and when she got to the road she just stopped. And sat there so I think that they have some common sense.

That describes our male Westie perfectly. He makes sure he is not only in the bed with us, but under the covers right up against my back at night. He's determined and won't take no for an answer LOL.

My darling Hannah was given to us as a small puppy. She grew up in an abundance of children, and her name name became Nana. I loved her for more than 16 years, and she passed in 2005. Was thinking of getting another, but there are no more children, and I am so old...

Ali Colorado She sounds like an Angel. My Sassafras lived 12 years and died in 2017. I was just crying thinking of all the dear memories she left us with. I hope I live long enough to get another Westie. But, God only knows that.

So sorry for your loss. I hope things are getting easier. We used to take our Westie (now 17 and somewhat wobbly) to the annual West Highland picnic day at a property in Dural, Sydney. One year she won a race (she knew there'd be a treatie at the other end!) and one year she won the fancy dress- she wore a hooded cape (little Red Riding Hood style) with two holes for her ears to stick out, woof-like. She looked very cute and had a small basket with hidden treaties to keep her focussed. What fun we had in those days.

I still can't even visit him because it still makes me heartbroken.. My little Toby dog...I wanted a female at first and when I watched the puppies, I wanted this adorable male because he was carrying a child's tea cup around and I knew I had to have him. Best decision ever. Westies are very cuddley and loving. I miss my toby every day.💔
