In this episode, we are heading to a secret, invite-only meet up that is literally straight out of Tokyo Drift. In fact, this underground scene that is directly and heavily inspired by the movie and more generally, reverse influenced by American JDM car culture. Its a fascinating case study of where life literally immitated art.
This is a meet called, fittingly, Back to the Furious. It harkens back to the street culture of the early 00s where gaudy bodykits underglow and nos ruled the day.
In special gatherings like this around Tokyo, you’ll see an incredible variety of rides, from fully tuned liberty walk R35 GTRs to Lamborghini Aventadors to the real stars of the show, the most ricer rides you’ll ever see.
To have the chance to be here in Japan, filming these cars which look like they came straight out of Need For Speed Underground, it feels like Ive come full circle in a way. My 14 year old self would lose his mind if he knew that one day, 32 year old me would be in Japan, chasing these real life hot wheels cars in my own childhood dream car - my own Subaru Impreza wrx sti.
I feel truly blessed to be able to document this glimpse into this aspect of Japanese car culture and its fun to connect the dots and see that this is a sub-culture that is as much about showing respect for the original scene as it is about self expression and the search for one’s identity in the very rigid Japanese society. Its this merging of east and west, and the back and forth feedback loop thats one of the most fascinating aspects of this sub culture, which itself, is a unique lens into Japanese culture as a whole.
I hope you enjoyed this video. Let me know what you thought in the comments below!

people calling this rice are stupid. Look at the civic in 1:13, this is a quality build, lots of work was put into this, rice is more like the dude painting the wheels green, the car blue, then gets a bodykit from ebay, realises its not the same color as his car so he has grey bumpers on a blue car with green wheels. This however is art, anyone who ever had a car and modded it knows that.

Agree with you completely, except I wouldn't call the poorly modified car you described (bodykit from ebay, mismatched colors, etc) a ricer, its just a lazy, half-assed "build" with no creativity, no taste and no vision in mind, also known as a shitbox. I just discovered what RICE actually stands for, Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements, so half the things people call "ricer" aren't even RICE they're just poor quality or tastelessly modified vehicles. These cars in the video on the other hand stay true to the definition of RICE, well crafted quality builds that are inspired by true race vehicles with the builders' own unique creative and personalised twist.

Alot of people dont realize that this back and forth between japan and american culture has been going for a long time, when everyone stateside was doing Type R integra swaps to the front end or doing S13 swaps to their USDM 240sx the culture in japan was doing the opposite. In japan it eas extremely rare to see a Silvia with Flip-up lights, same as an interga with the 4 halo/projector headlamps. They preferred USDM culture while we adopted the JDM way of life.
@chickeyy1792
@chickeyy1792 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've heard this once before somewhere. I'm from Europe and we get these "EUDM" specs with Japanese brands, that are usually better than USDM but also not quite as good as JDM. And this phenomenon is odd because, objectively speaking, JDM usually get and keep the coolest specs to their own while the US doesn't, so I guess the only reason why they exchange parts is because, it's simply cool getting a taste of something different, something remote, that you aren't used to, and it's what the car scenes around the world should be like in my opinion
@alayna4144
@alayna4144 4 жыл бұрын
@@chickeyy1792 Generally in tuning culture regardless of where your from the point is to stand out from the "normal" so changing a car to USDM or EUDM in Japan would be extremely rare and unique, much like when we modify VW and Audi with EUDM parts. The only real limit to this generally is you dont put EUDM or JDM parts on a non EU or Japanese car model. Not that it doesnt happen, for example the Ford Focus USDM is a prime candidate for EUDM Focus RS and ST styling. This all goes back to a need to stand out and be unique. Plus its just cool to have something that 99% of the people around you dont have.

I absolutely love the way Japan takes different aspects of car culture and makes it and turns it into its own thing, and everyone respects everyone’s rides and their ambitions for their cars and the overall scene. It’s starting to turn back towards that here in the States but it’s gonna be a while before it comes around full circle. That being said, I was always a fan of the SpoCom style cars that I saw growing up in Import Tuner and Sport Compact Tuner magazines, as well as from the very first Need For Speed Underground, and I hope that one day that style comes back

KrzyDrftr yeah but there were so many abominations on the road it was comical. There was a lot more friction between the muscle and import scene too which I don’t really miss. The V8 guys as a collective (Mustangs, Corvettes, Trans Am, GTO, and Camaro) were very dismissive of the tuner culture and the term “ricer” was derogatory. Granted 99% of the import cars that were getting the F&F treatment focused purely on aesthetics and couldn’t compete at all with the domestics on speed so they were dismissed as junk. The Skyline was some mythical god from Japan that was supposed to slay all those American muscle cars, but alas it never landed on our shores so it just stayed mythical. Really back in those days on the street scene the only car that intimidated the V8 guys was the Supra since it was known that they could be 1000hp+ potentially. Still it’s worth mentioning that a lot of extremely powerful V8 cars emerged it it was a really interesting for them as well. Now there’s lots of super powerful factory cars coming from Chevy, Ford, and Dodge so it seems like the domestic tuning scene has become less diverse. For a period of a few years everywhere you went there was a background soundtrack of thumping bass, buzzing imports and snarling V8s. It’s definitely a much more friendly and open minded car culture now. We’ve kind of buried the hatchet and pretty much everything is appreciated now unless it really is a piece of junk so I think that’s really cool. 👍

when Rims and Lowering springs became "the normal" they needed a way to bash cars that had thousands in custom body work, paint, interiors and electronics. the term RICER was used as an insult for anyone that spent time and money on their cars, but it stems from deep seeded jealousy, and an ignorance for the people that came before them and built the culture to waht it once was. Where the tuning scene in the 90's was in omage to street racing and hot rod scene of the 70's the tuning culture in the late 2000's changed along with the depression in the states. Money was limited and gas prices are high so it became more of what you could do with less. Its all an evolution, but even in todays car show scene a fully built Liberty Walk or Rocket Bunny car will get a lot more attention than someone who stanced their car on camber plates, static coils and rims that are too small for the car. In fact if these cars come out of retirement in the show scene, they are still top prize winning cars based on the amount of custom work done compared to alot of todays cars.

I live in Melbourne, Australia and I have a 1998 AE101R Toyota Corolla Csi sedan. He's my small green toy :) Front & rear struts, shocks and new rims and wheels; it's still a work in progress! To so many guys here they look at my ride and think what a shit box, but this little green machine gives me so much fun I love driving it. I want to go to car meets but I know the car scene here just isn't right for it hopefully one day it will

Older video, but so awesome to watch this. I'm not much of a fan anymore of this styling, it definitely reminds me of the good old days. Days when the car scene in the United States was still fun and free living. Now, it full of OEM + builds... Not that that's bad either.

Japan is the best place to start a big group or create a large community as they respect each other. They don't really care what you drive as long as you drive your car with love and passion.

Fuck, I was just a little kid during the golden rice era. Always played need for speed underground and watched fast and the furious, dreaming of once owning a riced out japanese car. Brings back memories. Just wished I was old enough to drive and really live that golden era

Fantastic video mate! I wish the car culture here in Australia was this forgiving and respectful about other car cultures. Here, everyone has to fit into what’s new or what’s “JDM”. We had the “ricer” phase back in the 2000’s which is now looked down upon yet everyone who i know who grew up with that, miss those times.

I wish the spirit of the Japenese Tuning scene were in germany too. I hate the German Tuning scene, because everyone is mocking you up about the car you drive what they don't like, they haven't much respect for your car. That makes me sad. But this video shows me how much i want to experience the Japanese Tuning scene for myself. I love it, keep it up Albo.

Car culture in general is amazing, and passion runs through every form of it, but seeing the late 90s-2000s Tuner culture still thriving is amazing, and moat definitely NFS Underground, Midnight Club and The Fast and Furious played a massive roll in definitely exposed a lot of people, including myself to a side of car culture most of us didn't know existed, love seeing these videos of Japanese car culture, and street racing/drifting scene, and learning more about it

I got into imports in high school (circa 09-10) right when the last breaths of this scene were being had. Man I miss seeing these so much from when I was kid growing up in Raleigh, I've really started missing them. Now that I can feasibly spend money on my own car (90 CRX Si) I really wanna do something 90's/00's-esque. I've already got a Mugen/WingsWest whale tail spoiler for it, some altezza lights (still on the fence about those) and have access to some late 90's Drag brand wheels....Though I also wanna itasha it....
