The Rockhound is made to look like some of the actual earth moving equipment and steam shovels that were used to scrape the top off the Appalachian mountains and dump all the slag into the valleys where most towns exist today. The large majority of mining in West Virginia and surrounding states was mountain top removal rather than deep shaft, and when possible the shafts would just follow the coal seam through a mountain, not down deeper underground. Most towns in WV get thier water from abandoned shafts because without pumps running 24/7 the shafts quickly flood since all the rivers and valleys were filled up with slag and it rains in WV 300+ days out of the year. O.o

@@Nathan-mf2yz From what I understand the Ashheap is the way it is because one of the Mining Corporations developed these machines that would drill down and basically vaporize all of the minerals and ore into a sort of smoke or gas that would be pumped to the surface, then other machines would suck in and condense the "mineral fog" stuff back into usable materials. I think one of the missions is to reactivate these Condensers. Anyway 25+ years of these machines pumping coal, rock, and uranium ore dust up into the atmosphere that then settled onto the ground is what has given the Ash Heap its blighted appearance and nasty air.

@@rogersparker5875 Most of Southern West Virginia has already been mined through Mountaintop Removal to the point there are no Mountains, only hills because all the valleys have been filled with the slag. I suspect the majority of West Virginia that isn't rich tourist destination like Pocahontas county will be stripped the same way eventually :(

The use of nukes for mining was actually tested by the department of the interior as part of Operation Plowshare during the late 50s, early 60s. They also tried using nukes to create artificial lakes and other land formations. Unfortunately the gamma bursts irradiated everything to unacceptable levels o.o

I was actually considering making a 'REVIVE THE ASH HEAP' movement to help get more players to settle in the Ash Heap, and show it's still very usable land. There's a crossroads just outside of Welch where I put my first camp, and made a small settlement for people to stop by, rest, and buy supplies. I hope more people note the significance, and importance of the area, although nowadays I see most people living in the Savage Divide :/

When i was in Junior high school in Fayette County West Virginia we were required to read the book Storming Heaven, a Harlequin style romance novel based on the WV coal wars. O.o

@@CreatorCade Its full title is Storming Heaven: A Novel by Denise Giardina. I dont remember it being great but I hope you enjoy it. I Imagine you can find it pretty cheap.

From the Battle of Matewan to the Blair Mountain Massacre these men who worked in the mines and wanted better conditions to work in, and they were killed. Tyranny of the mine owners led to the deaths of hundreds of innocent miners.

For anyone that would like to hear a little more about the real life story, a podcast called Behind the Bastards did a two part episode "The Second American Civil War You Never Learned About" that tells the story of Blair mountain. Worth a listen.

I feel like both mining companies in this situation were bad but garahan were better than hot right because they at least tried to help people keep their jobs with the excavator power armor and it wasn’t for sabotage by hornwright it would have allowed people to keep their jobs

Well apperently on ps4 there are estimates of over 400k player's and thats just one platform. The game is at least better than watching people hate on it, even though they put out a new video on it every week about how trash it is with even more footage from the game than the week before.

The Bethesda writing staff clearly did their research to set up a well-written and believable story about competing mining companies in the Fallout universe. It’s a shame their work is overshadowed by the technical failings and greedy monetization of the game.
