West Virginia's World Famous Rail Trout

West Virginia is Almost Heaven when it comes to trout fishing. The Mountain State stands tall and provides excellent trout options for anglers. Meanwhile, crowds can amass in the Mountain State. Fortunately, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources turns to their friend the railroad to spread out stocked trout and endless social distancing for fishermen who want to avoid crowds in Mountaineer Country. In this episode of Pautzke Outdoors we show off West Virginia's famous rail trout and explain how to catch them now.

I got all excited because I'm from Buckhannon and Alexander and was excited because I know that spot, just havent fished it.. but the fact that you called it out is pretty insane hahaha

Hey guys I live and fish in wv. Great video. And that's just 1 of the many great streams we have here in wv. Thanks for the good video and by the way. I've been using your fire red eggs for a couple years in the streams here and they work great. Theirs always a couple jars in my vest. Thank u guys

Love trout fishing in WV. I have my life time fishing and buy the stamp separate. I like going to other states too but it's just amazing.

My dad ran the train on those tracks for a long time. I can remember riding on the front of the pick-up while he pulled the DNR up the river to stock.

Woof. If you’re going to release.. here’s some tips: use stronger line to shorten fights if possible, and try to unhook them in the net while wet, and release. After an extended fight you’re already depleting a fish, dragging them out and holding them up for the content ain’t helping. At that point, just eat them because you’re likely increasing overall mortality.

I have fished their you can find Brook native trout and yes brown trout some get fairly large.

if you want *remote* trout fishing try Otter Creek Wilderness east of Elkins.

I will say he is a little far but throwing them in on STOCKING is pretty good for the fish gives em a shock to get adjusted quicker

Trout are tough so they have no problem being dropped, them dropping them allows them to stock more in a day.

First time I’ve actually seen a KZfaqr in the Northern Part of the state. I recommend Cass Scenic, It has many nice trout spots.

If you really want to access this place the easiest way to get there is from Evergreen Alton road just outside of Adrian WV

I don't mind catching stockers but I always release em. Where I live in Wisconsin they stock quite a bit but we do have alot of natural reproduction and I prefer to eat those.

Where I live we have Plane and Drone Trout. They fly over and drop them like when they fertilize crops.

I live in Virginia and our trout stocking program sucks. Trout fishing in West Virginia a thousand times better than it is here in Virginia. Nobody knows how to throw anything back in Virginia. They announced where and when they are stocking allowing everyone to bombard the stream and fish it until all the fish are gone. At most I keep two fish. And I cook them as soon as I get home. My fish do not go in the freezer. And I do not keep any fresh stocked fish. Most people don't realize if you let that fish stay in the water for at least a week it changes the taste of that fish dramatically when it has been allowed to eat natural food.

I'm gonna have to disagree,the stocking program in west va has went down hill and I fish both states. It use to be really good in wv,I fish lost river,smoke hole,all the lakes and trout run and waites and they dont put barley any fish in not to mention the trick chasers like these guys. I myself limit out in Va almost everytime and am lucky to get 2-3 in wv..those boys in wv will catch them till they are all gone just like va,I do mean multiple trips in one day like it's a numbers game,shit I'm happy just to get dinner. They need more game wardens to patrol..

They announce stocking dates at locations in WV, too. And while the game wardens might ride with the truck as it unloads in Smoke Hole or Germany Valley, they don't stop the line of "sportsmen" from following right behind and as soon as the last fish hits the water, Johnny Conservation tucks tail and heads out at speed, no Id's or licenses checked.

Service a lot of gas wells around that area. You out of town people watch out for the bears.

Shavers Fork is nice too! Cross the continental divide into Pendleton county and fish the north fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River. You will travel thru Gods country to get there.

Palace Valley is in Upshur County. (Up - sure) look it up. Col Upshur. County seat is Buckhannon. (Buck-Han-None). Look it up. Native American name. Dam you people piss me off.

The problem is , Our state stocked otters , These biologist are real brilliant, take dump , stock trout and feed otters, had them to move in my pond, ate 50 cat fish , about 15 beat state record,

Why do they need to stock trout in west Virginia? There would be much better fishing for native brook trout if the stocked fish didn't compete with them and push them out of their native habitat. This is why native eastern brook trout have disappeared in over 90% of their historic range. Trout should only be stocked in places that can't support a healthy habitat of native trout. This is a terrible program that will lead to the eventual disappearance of native fish entirely.

Apparently you have no idea what man has done to trout habitat in West Virginia. THOUSANDS of miles of habitat destroyed for human use and consumption. Please do not ever fish for a stocked trout.

Folks are subsistence fishers and hunters haha... so it wont matter.. they will all be gone either way
