I was a 63B (mechanic) in the Army for a cav scout battalion and I can verify that these are pieces of shit. I replaced every single part on that monstrosity at least once for almost 5 years. It was good to see they finally moved on.

Man, I used to drive these in the Army. Driving one on the highway makes you feel like a badass, but going down the highway in the gunner turret sitting behind an M2 makes you feel like King Big Dick.

Next to the coolant expansion tank is a plug. If you unplug it the radiator fan runs constantly. If you have an MRE box you can totally use the cardboard as a temporary thermostat gasket.

I work on these here in kansas on Fort Riley, that looks like a M1097. They are notorious for overheating! It's always the fan clutch solenoid, time delay or the fan clutch itself. If you unplug the time delay the fan clutch should kick on if not your fan clutch is seized, if it is there's 6 screws on the back of it loosen them and tap around the fan clutch and sometimes it'll spring out then tighten the screws back up. It should kick on at about 180 degreese.

When I was long haul trucking i never once seen a military convoy without at least one broken down humvee. usually there were a couple.

Unplug the fan clutch solenoid so the engine fan is always on. Literally how we made one last a whole NTC rotation with the overheating problem

As a mechanic in the military and having to work on those all the time I will say the fact that he made it that far before that tire blew kinda shocked me. And them gauges on that thing don’t always work right that’s one of the big problems we have on ours. Well the gauges and the flashers in them are our main problems usually

I served for 6 years and spent 5 of those in a hummer lol, worst vehicle I’ve ever driven. It has 0 space inside, like a reverse TARDIS. It falls apart sitting still, you are a true hero driving this thing that far.

The story's that could be told about HumVee's in the mid 2000's would curl your hair, then make your hair fall out. One of the easiest things to change down on the flat beds. HumVee's can fly, I saw one fly, it was in Iraq, being pulled by another HumVee, second HumVee broke lose, went down the road, hit a big pile of dirt, HumVee flew quite nicely, bounced several times, didn't tip over, 1st HumVee can back reconnected, disappeared into the night.

That's so cool. I had the chance to buy one with a topper for $19,900 with a extra set of tires and a set of soft doors. The surplus store had 4 of them for sale. They said they were going to get more of them but not yet.

I drove one in the marines several times. They’re hot, noisy and no creature comforts. But fun to drive. Not sure how you keep from it being stolen since it doesn’t have keys.

I spent 6yrs in the USMC in a heavy machine gun platoon, we had the hard top humvee's, I don't know how they designed them, all the heat from the engine comes right in to the passenger compartment, you can cook a can of soup on the engine block though.

I appreciate this video so much. After active duty, I spent time as our CO's driver while in the Reserves. I drove a humvee - it did have a windshield and, technically it had door (the fabric kind that have zip up windows). One summer we had to take the company of fuel tanker trucks from Traverse City, MI to Omaha, NE (800mi or so). The company left in three platoons separated by 15 minutes. The CO wanted to drive between them, so we had to catch up from time to time with different platoons. That meant driving over 70mph for the first 2 hours of the trip. We ran out of gas before we had gone 200 miles. Additionally, because there was no AC, we ran with the window unzipped and my short-sleeved arm hanging out the window. When we got to Omaha my left arm was so badly burned it took weeks to get back to normal. Anyway - driving a Humvee is fun in little bursts. Not as fun as a tank - but fun none the less. If you're going over 100 miles though, hitch a ride on a blackhawk.

These things are pretty fun to drive but they do have maintenance issues being so old. From what I've heard, it's mainly the engine that requires maintenance. 240 is not overheating, 260 would be problematic. The cooling system is rated for 185-250 degrees turns on at 220 and off at 190. You also want to check fluids monthly and do basic maintenance like draining the fuel filter after driving it, etc. I wanna get one when I have the money to blow and install some subs in the bed, Apple CarPlay, etc. and totally pimp it out

I did 2700 in a fox body lx 4banger that was 32 years old at the time. Lol It constantly over heated and actually only made it about 1/3 the way there before it chugalugged itself out. Little thing was an awesome car though despite being ragged out by the previous owners before it was gifted to me. Loved it. And watching this threw me right back behind the wheel of that little stang, cruising on the highways of p.a on my way back to Texas. If you haven’t done a full road trip through the us by car. Do it. You only live once so trust me the views you’ll see are worth it.

2:52 unplug the time delay module (little flat box with plugs next to the washer reservoir) the fan will stay on your gas mileage will suck even more but it won't overheat. I spent six years working on Humvees for a contractor on Ft Polk and we had to do that hack more than once on our own recovery trucks
