I'll say this, the HUMVEE was an excellent vehicle for what it was designed for, did some of the initial testing at Ft. Knox waaaayyyyy back in 1984, (yes, I'm old) on what type of grease worked best, how it handled terrain and slopes, vision, mobility, speed, etc.... This was not the be all end all, I was a fresh private, just following what my superiors asked and was thrilled to be able to be the drive this newer vehicle. (The HEMTT was also being tested). Fast forward 25 years and I'm in Afghanistan looking at a flat bottomed, heavily up armored HUMVEE with a engine that was NEVER designed for that type of weight, and a little more situational awareness as an E7. Yeah, we put sand bags all over the flooring plates, added what we could to the outside, and did a ton of praying that no IED's would be found the "hard" way or RPG's/EFP's fired. The vehicle was never designed for these types of situations, which at the time of conception had not been encountered by the US military. This was in 2008. (Yes, I understand the military was looking/ordering/had MRAP variants in 07, but none for us at FOB Salerno at that time had them). Following year, 2009, we received the first round of the MRAP vehicles, (RG series I believe) with the V bottoms, come in the back or the gunners hatch, neither the driver/TC doors opened. Presented several issues on that alone, but the vehicle, memory serves, was from South Africa, or designed in that country. Saved my life, and that of 6 others when we took an IED in the face, took off the cowl all the way to the main frame and saved several in my Platoon as we took over 40 "hits" during that rotation. (Mine Clearance Platoon). Things evolve, that is the nature of man/war and the HUMVEE has outlived it's design. I did get to use this vehicle in 2011/12, (JLTV) or a variant, and while I did like the modular design, found the crew quarters lacking. (did not drive it). Sitting in the back, it's difficult to stay out the gunners way as he travers's, vision is not optimal, and you have no way to fire out any portal on the doors if in contact without opening the doors. I was not able to use the CROWS on this vehicle, so cannot comment on that. But, this is the future for now as it does offer a ton more protection for our troops, and that is what counts.

From the outside it looks cool and is a good idea. From a mechanic standpoint all those fancy electronics are gonna be a nightmare.

The RG 31 was my baby in Afganistan. We ran 5 in our Route Clearance patrol. 4 out of 5 were hit by IEDs. 2 of them multiple times. The glory of that truck was out mechanics ability to get them from "blown up" to driving condition in 2 missions. I know Humvees will always be the icon for the Army, but those RGs saved our lives. More than once and I'll always remember them for that.

The, "Student Driver", psychological warfare placard is the greatest innovation on the JLTV, which took 15 years and $7,000,000 to develop. Top military mobility experts say this addition to the JLTV will provide, an "astounding deterrence", to enemy fire.

"designed for the European battlefield" 🤣🤣🤣 The Humvee was never designed for Frontline combat in the first place. It was a carry all/ workhorse for behind the lines logistics..🙃

Humvee “fast” is hitting 55mph downhill with the pedal to the metal.

I live in the city these are made, its pretty neat seeing them tested all the time or on the highways, truck definitely scores a ton of military contracts over the years.

As a person who lives in Oshkosh seeing one of these on the road is like seeing a normal truck at this point

I joined the Army in 1986, the HUMVEE was just starting to replace the Jeep. Neither of those vehicles were ever meant to be an armored vehicle. In Somalia we put sandbags in the seat wells and floor boards and called them "uparmored" and the gunner had no protection. The new armored vehicles look great for actual combat use, I hope they keep some type of field vehicle that can be used for basic transporation.

I remember reading reviews back in the late 70s, early 80s about the Humvee replacing the Jeep. Same arguments different time.

The MATV saved my life and many other Marines I served with. We had over 70 MATV/MRAP vehicles get blown up during my time in Now Zad Afghanistan and zero deaths resulted from those.

This is so awesome! The US army wants a better, safer, and more powerful vehicle for their infantry. To get reliable power from the engine they turn to Chevy and Gale Banks, who is a legend in the racing scene. He is basically a speed shop owner however, he is probably the most successful racers in the world. Gale holds multiple top speed records on the Bonneville Salt Flats with diesel and gasoline powered race cars and he still runs a speed shop albeit a much bigger and successful one. This is just an amazing real story of the military working with a civilian racer to make something so awesome. BTW: the power on this engine is low because it was detuned to run on bad/dirty diesel, you never know what you will get in a plastic jug somewhere in Afghanistan. The horsepower can be up to 575HP Torque from 725-900 ft-tq

There's so many cool features not covered here, this vehicle is amazing

The biggest thing the Humvees missed was armour plating on the floor. A lot of units made up their own. Mind you go over a 500lb IED in an APC it’s academic.

I enjoy driving hmmwvs but they're pretty faulty and rough to ride in. They handle mud pretty well unless it has that bolt on armor kit then it was like driving an f250 with a go kart motor.

I love how everyone in the comments is making fun about America calling this vehicle light.If you saw this vehicle's opponents,you would understand why the US call them light (im mostly referring to the South African Marauder MRAP)

I think all my preventative matinance guys know the Humvee was not that reliable

The heating and air conditioning have a min of basically an hour bruh id hate to be in there if they go with min specs.

When tested this vehicle has one critical repair every 7500 miles. This compares with 1700 miles for a Humvee. The overall reliability is amazing. The Duramax is a Izuzu designed engine with incredible reliability and Banks modified.

The HMMWV was a replacement for the last of the Military M-151 Mutt Jeeps and M-561 Gama-Goats. The first generation of the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) M998 were an absolute joy drive to use. But after Operation Just Cause in Panama 1989, and the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993. The higher ups were pushing for a HMMWV with some kind of ballistic protection. The first of these had a Kevlar blanket (spall liner) placed into the floor pan inside the crew area and later got bullet resistant glass in modified doors designated as the model XM-1114. This was fine since the frame and 6.2 diesel engine could handle the extra weight. However with the addition of heavy plate armor package and equipment the HMMWV became so overweight that the frame and engine were having a lot of trouble. That and the fact that the HMMWV was not Mine-Resistant lead to the creation of the Oshkosh (JLTV) M-1278. These two vehicel's are basically Apples and Oranges, one can not fairly compare the two.

Saw one of these at a military XPO in 2017. A few years later right before I got out, they were starting to fase them into my unit. I tell you what. We always preferred the non up armored humvee for command level events. The up-armored ones were slow and always broke down.

That’s a badass looking ride. Best engine with best trans with the best suspension. I just hope they incorporated the best radiator and BEST AIR CONDITIONER! 😉

I was in the US Army from 1986 to 1995. I hated the Humvee. It was unconfortable, noisy, hard to see around and a general pain in the ass to drive. I was a mechanic and it was a nightmare to work on them. I'm glad that they replaced the piece of junk.

That things a BEAST! Great to see the old humvee's get replaced, troops will love this thing compared to humvee's. Hopefully they hold up over the years, Oshkosh typically makes solid trucks.

So two of these may or may not have been dragged raced down the runway of Al Asad back in early 2015. They were leaps ahead of the Humvee. I never wanted to get into a 7-Ton or Humvee ever again.

I love the JLTV, it looks good, it is good. It’s a perfect vehicle for our military. But I will always love the Humvee more because of its long combat history and its beautiful looks.

I hope I get chosen for this license next. I have HMMWV, LVSR AND MTVR licenses rn. They dont have any JLTV's in the school house......yet. I Want this license though, its like how I was when I first saw a HMMWV. I thought it was so cool and after I got the license for it I was sick of it. I like MRVR's though😹

Just what the military needs. A hopelessly complicated engine and a check engine light.

By military standards, yeah, 10 tons is fairly light. The M1A2 Abrams weighs in at over 70 tons and the Bradleys are 25 to 30 tons. It's not a Toyota Prius out on a Sunday drive...military vehicles have heavy duty tires and suspension systems for rough terrain, they got armor, they got radios, heavy-duty engines, various modules and equipment your average 30 mpg street car doesn't.

when it comes to the suppression its kind easy to figure out obviously its not gonna be leaf, air bag or coil. we can look at it another way it has to be completely independent, height adjustable and extremely rugged and a proven system. Hint its bean used on tanks it is used on some farm tractors and lots of agricultural trailers are starting to use it. if you still haven figured it out click read more. its hydro pneumatic

my brother came up with a device to minimumize damage to internal part of the humv, and overall dmage by IED's. the government took his paten from him without compensation, to give it to someone else. it still isn't being used to protect our troops

Pretty much, a simpler Durmax engine without DEF or emissions crap. A straight reliable diesel motor and trans.

even though this is clearly more armored and made for war, the humvee still looks tougher and more american. this new thing has alot of sleek looking lines, and doesnt look as beefy as a humvee.

I’ve seen these things loaded up on palletized trains for years. Looks pretty impressive.

They had me at it's a safer vehicle for our troops. I'm also of the belief that law enforcement vehicles should be armored. Keep our heroes safe so they can keep us safe.

Yesterday's truck for tomorrow's Army. What is survivable for MOOTW, and LIC, is a death trap for Large Scale Combat Operations (LSCO), and vice versa. Expanded indirect fire capability means that what the opponent can find, they can kill. The JLTV is HEAVY and unsuitable for unimproved and cross country operations - the places where you need to be to avoid being targeted.
