Why do you not open the clasp and solder the wire inside it?

it will soldier it self out back when you crank it up to 180 degree celsius(soldier point). it is just a simple way to fix it if your engine does not require a serious crankint to start it,you just crank it for a 15-20 secs, and you need to take out your starter and re soder it.guys in my country who are rebuilding starters and alternators are using welding method called point soldering or argon soldering, there are also several ways to connect brushes new wire to old wire home made ways like to cap it wit an copper plate and soldier it with an axid soldieing, it is quite effective if you do not use argon or point welding method.

I fix all my own alternators and starters but the tip about holding the braided copper wire with the pliers when tinning it is a new one to me which I'm going to use the next time I'm replacing brushes, thanks for the video.

I did mine with a hot air station and it worked :) not a paint stripping gun a pukka heat station that I have for soldering.I guess a plumbers blow torch would work but needs care if you havent got a soldering iron with a super large tip like the one in the video.

Great video. My soldering skills are rubbish and from the small amount of effort I put in I couldn't find the right size brushes. It's for a boat starter and I don't want to get stuck out at sea with the kids so I'm going to buy a new starter. I have some skills and knowledge. Soldering is not one of those skills haha.

so cut the old carbon brush as clean as possible then put some tin right?i am trying to replace carbon starter for Perodua Kancil or Daihatsu Mira/Nippa..

How much the wattage of your soldering iron?

Once again a great video... However, I would have used a pair of wire snips/cutters that have a fine beveled end. Then place them where the plate is bent over and clamping the braided copper lead. Then as you squeeze as to cut a wire, it will open/spread that clamp. After a little effort, the existing copper lead will come out. Prep the new brush leads as he showed with solder, place in the clap, close the clamp to compress the lead and then solder the entire connection. No matter what country you are in, how hot it may get or just how long you crank the motor........ The joint will never come apart!!!!!

Ah so this cant be done with normal soldering iron then. The issue is I have a coupe fan heater with worn-out brushes. New plan, slaughter alternator with long enough wires that I can solder on.
