I was curious as to your opinion of the HBO Westworld series. I really love how they have remained faithful to the original film and it's sequels, while simultaneously expanding greatly on the ideas and scope. It is truly an amazing reboot, on par with Bladerunner 2049, at a time when most reimaginings of older source material, are just tired retreads with slick new veneers.

Definitely. I bet James Cameron watched "Westworld", "Colossus :The Forbin Project", "Doctor Who: The War Machines", and two episodes from the original B&W series of The Outer Limits "Soldier" and "Demon with a Glass Hand", when he wrote The Terminator. There's even a speech in "Colossus" that is nearly word for word the same as some of Kyle Reese's dialogue in The Terminator.

From what I read, Schwarzenneger was originally cast for the role of Kyle Reese but insisted on playing the Terminator instead, using Yul Brinner's performance in "Westworld" as a blueprint. Also, regarding "Futureworld", however appalling it looks like, it makes you wonder if Cameron watched it, especially the ending which shows Peter Fonda fighting his own duplicate in - if not a factory - at least something resembling it.

I think, unless I am mistaken, that the idea of the hands being the one flawed aspect of the robots in Westworld goes back to artists of the past whose greatest difficulty was in being able to draw or paint the human hand as it was the hardest body part to perfect in art form. Surely the problem with robot hands is how much they move. The fake skin has to flex and stretch hundreds of times a day in all sorts of ways. Nowhere else on the robot bodies would come close to that, so it makes some sense that they would have special difficulty with the hands.

I just watched this movie this morning for the first time on HBO. So blown away this has slipped under my nose. I’m a self proclaimed movie buff and am ashamed I’ve missed this! That being said, I thought the exact same thing when I watched it! Need to watch again but the guy was running away and no matter his lead you knew the gunslinger, casually pursuing him, was going to catch him. Also the all black outfit tipped off the Myers vibes. Such a good movie!

Hello Oliver, Eric Ryder here! Excellent review of "Westworld". I really thought this film was truly ahead of it's time. This truly was the seedling to bigger things for both Michael Crichton as I watched this film I noticed two films that truly inspired this movie and not the crappy sequel and the unsuccessful 1980's series, I'm talking about "Jurassic Park" with the theme of theme parks mechanical props go haywire and "The Terminator" because Yul Brynner as The Gunslinger reminded me of him. He was unstoppable, silent, stoic and unbeatable. The film really caught my attention the whole way through and I was excited the whole way through. The acting was pretty god, though not memorable, the fear and the whole idea combining the Western genre with sci-fi was pure original and effective and that the creations killing the creators and the guests give us that eerie feeling of the possibility of our future if computer generated advancements take over our lives and don't need to rely on human dependency. I might be thinking crazy, but a possible cyber war may not be too far away. This film indicates that possibility that rings more closer to now than it was back in 1973. Please stop and visit my channel and check out my review on "Westworld". Feel free to leave a comment. Okay? Thank you.

Barret played many roles in Trek from the Enterprise’s original First Officer, Number One, to Nurse Chapel, Lawaxana Troi and voiced most of the computers up to the 2009 reboot (which was her last role).

A few thoughts (ha ha, get it, thoughts): (1) In retrospect, I believe that the the first sign that there might be "trouble in paradise" (in short, things might eventually go wrong go wrong go wrong...) was the seemingly blank look on Arlette's face when "she" and John finish their lovemaking..."she" actually seems to be disappointed. The fact that she exits saying "I think you're very nice" rather curtly and ends up later that morning in the bed belonging to the character played by Dick Van Patten...I think Mr. Crichton was providing humorous but pointed foreshadowing here. (2) I do agree with the reviewer's thought that corporate greed was really the aim of the film more than arrogance with technology (although both themes neatly dovetail as the film reaches its climax and resolution). (3) A lot of people have grumbled about how the HBO series overemphasized the female androids' dominance. It seems inevitable to me -- in the film, the male robots do all the killing while the female ones are basically just there "for the coitus". Might have made for a more interesting twist if the women automatons would have picked up guns, swords, etc. Speaking of which... (4) I do wish that actresses Victoria Shaw (the Medieval Queen), Anne Randall (Daphne) and Julie Marcus (Girl in Dungeon) would have had more to do in the movie [this is my only REAL complaint here]. It would have been something to see the gradual breakdown and eventual "cascade failure" [the term we might use these days for it] play out through, say, the Queen repeating "herself" after the guest left [and the robot programmers/handlers making note of it] or Daphne not only refusing seduction but also equally refusing to report to Central Repair after attempts to reprogram "her" do not work and eventually "she" is carried away by tech support when her battery power runs out [perhaps freezing in place at some point]. Maybe at the conclusion of the scene where John sets the Gunslinger on fire [and the camera pans back to both the Queen and the Black Knight] there is a gradual close-up of the Queen and right when the lens shows only "her" face, "she" blinks "her" eyes several times and swivels "her" head to indicate that "her" reserve battery power wasn't actually exhausted yet. At least when the brief scene of the Girl in Dungeon comes up, the fact that "she" refuses water, "knowing" that it will short-circuit "her" leads me to believe that a kind of AI sentience has been reached [bringing this commentary full circle with the statement statement I made above regarding Arlette] and maybe the robot breakdown would have been inevitable anyway. But Evan Rachel Wood kills it in the new series, nonetheless. That's all I have for now. Enjoyed the review -- looking forward to watching more of these!

Oliver, the TNT channel is still around, runs a mix of movies and sports. Turner Classic Movies was started as an answer to the AMC (American Movie Classics) channel. Since Ted Turner owned the MGM film library he had plenty of films to run there

A very good friend of mine show me this movie in DVD at early 2000 and it surprised me. Your video is awesome and help me understand this film which -until I know- was never released theatrically or in VHS in Chile, but was shown in midnight cinema in the 80s. Thanks Oliver for another hit in your collection.

Michael Crichton was a very smart man who was always questioning the conventional narrative, I wonder what he would have thought of things today. I'm pretty sure they would have tried to cancel him.

Remember in the film Jurassic Park and wondered if it was a sideways reference to Westworld: John Hammond: "All major theme parks have delays. When they opened Disneyland in 1956, nothing worked! " Ian Malcolm: "Yeah, but, John, if The Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don't eat the tourists." The idea of the robotic performers in a theme park killing tourists due to a malfunction is pretty much exactly the plot of Westworld.

Yul Brenner was incredibly menacing with hardly any dialog. The movie has some slow bits and odd bits but otherwise is excellent. When comparing the movie to the new series it's as if the new series writers really don't get the tone of the movie. They are more interested in exploring AI self awareness than following up the idea of one of the first movie killer androids/robots. It's kind of the same story problem Person of Interest had in that it was very loosely based on Colossus The Forbin Project. I don't particularly care for either television adaptions in their execution of stories.

Another classic, and a great review. I remember running a Film Society at school, shortly after the release of Jurassic Park, and we showed this movie , great comparisons. Amazing what 20 years of technology advancement can do. Also shows how far ahead of its time Westworld was. I guess I didn’t give the new TV show enough of a chance. Will have to start rewatching!

I also remembered watching Westworld on cable TV back in the 90's the first time and i was blown away especially during the final act of the film. Years later i preferred Westworld over Jurassic park mainly because Westworld worked on a lower budget. It just goes to show you can pull off great artistic decisions on a smaller scale.

I like the different worlds and how violence erupts in Roman World while the guests are oblivious in Westworld sets up great tension and also reflects on us as a society watching violence on the news in other countries so different in culture to our own and we think "it couldn't happen here"

Well, this past Thursday, I came across this movie on Blu-Ray in a "$7.99" bin at my local Walmart. I finally watched it last night. Such a great movie, definitely not perfect, then again what movie is. One thing that bugs me about the movie is, with each world, there is a champion of some sort, "Westworld" had The Gunslinger and "Medieval World" had The Black Knight. I wish I got to see what "Roman World's" champion was, but since it barely got any focus, there was no way of telling. But other then that, I really dug this movie.

I saw Westworld back from when it was shown at theaters, and many times since. Yes, the lack of Medievalworld footage always has me wanting more of it, particularly once the system breaks down and the robots go uncontrolled. But the man guest who was slain in Medievalworld, almost certain his wife was killed in Romanworld in which she was one of the guests.
