Westworld Season 4 Episode 8 ending explained and review. In this recap and spoiler review, I breakdown Westworld Season 4 Episode 8 'Que Sera Sera', which is now streaming on HBO Max. There are heavy spoilers in this video.
Westworld is an American dystopian science fiction, neo-Western television series created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. Produced and aired by HBO, it is based on the 1973 film of the same name (written and directed by Michael Crichton) and, to a lesser extent, the film's 1976 sequel, Futureworld. The story begins in Westworld, a fictional, technologically advanced Wild-West-themed amusement park populated by android "hosts". The park caters to high-paying guests who may indulge their wildest fantasies within the park without fear of retaliation from the hosts, who are prevented by their programming from harming humans. Later on, in the third season, the series' setting expands to the real world, in the mid-21st century, where people's lives are driven and controlled by a powerful artificial intelligence named Rehoboam. Nolan and Joy serve as executive producers, along with J. J. Abrams, Jerry Weintraub, and Bryan Burk.

It's been a journey covering Westworld this season, and I want to thank you all for tuning in. There are still videos to come on what this is all means for season 5, a general review of season 4 and more. What did you think of the Westworld Season 4 finale and what are your predictions for season 5, if we get it?

I agree with you…this was an amazing season with a poor finale that didn’t do major character arcs any justice….perhaps I should watch it again, but it almost felt like they edited a lot out post production and put out something that could serve as a series finale in case the series get cancelled…..?

I think that the test will be Dolores trying to clean the nihilistic stain from William's soul. I think it will all be predicated on the fidelity testing actually being a success. And we'll discover that Caleb was the successful test. The question will be WHY it succeeded. It will build on Ford's architecture of sentience, completing his hybrid of Bernard, and we'll learn both why it worked, but also, and this will be ultimately the most central theme of the show itself, how such a key will reveal about the very nature of Consciousness itself, and so far as it enable survival and meaning Within an ostensibly cold and violent universe Remember that Ford lamented the fact that he had achieved everything he thought possible, But ultimately felt as though it revealed nothing about consciousness, other than the fact that it served as an elaborate mating ritual. Remember his stories about the peacock and the Greyhound.... I just don't believe that they intend to leave Ford as a depressed and vindictive mad scientist, but rather an optimistic and compassionate uber-mensch. The greatness he achieved DURING his life was unlocking the technical secrets of consciousness. And while he was unable to set Humanity on a course that redeemed it from its violent and limited nature, he set hostkind on that very same path. Think about Bernard's visions during season 2....

Happy to hear someone else mention the writing (dialog specifically). That’s been my biggest disappointment since season 3, and I really hoped it would get fixed in this season but alas. The concepts they’re touching and narrative in general keep being super interesting, just wish they had delivered more thoughtful, deep and natural sounding dialogue like in season 1 (and parts of season 2) instead of the corny, exposition driven one we’re getting now.

As much as I liked this season, this show is spinning its wheels, and has since the start of Season 3. And now, we have a reboot of Season 1 in S4, with it being obvious we're getting something of a reboot of Season 2 in S5. Give me a break. I'm too much of a completionist to not finish the show (if that's even possible), but I'm wary of the final season. I honestly think they're just fiddling their thumbs until they can get to the their big "gotcha" ending, which will likely be the simulation-within-a-simulation theory most people have had since S2. Myself included. Don't get me wrong, the show is still pretty good, but it lost its heady place amongst some of the greatest written shows by dragging the story out unnecessarily.

Such a disappointment as well. That moment in season 4 when you realize Hale has already enslaved humanity and molded the world to her whims was one of the best reveals in TV history. All that build up just to see the rest of the season fumble and then go super esoteric at the end. Also, what was the point of spending several episodes building up to resurrecting Mauve to have her basically do nothing but get shot by William like the rest of the main characters in the span of 5 minutes?

I think a version of C, or maybe an interaction with her in real life will be fortified by the scan Bernard did when he and C were at the 1920s park (behind the mirror). If C is the "key" to saving the world and she hasn't done anything yet that's substantial, I'm guessing Bernard scanned her and told her to trust him is bc of whatever they're going to put in season 5. Since Dolores/Christina never met C, I'm guessing that might come in hand.

I like Westworld, and will watch the next season if there is one, but like you I was not fulfilled by E8. It felt emotionally flat. All but a small part of the world will survive, many hosts were killed, the ALL of the main characters failed in their missions... BUT no one looked upset or disappointed by the result. Que Sera Sera. Whatever. Not very satisfying. Moving on... so Westworld is going to be an odyssey -- an epic trip that often times returns the owner to their beginnings. That's cool. - The thing about questioning the nature of our reality, well that worked (will it still felt emotional drained of drama): Human-William tells his host that enough of the biological William survives that the host-William can continue his original mission - strongest survives. That was cool. Human-William gets his host to kill him to escape the hell of being freeze dried and thawed and freeze dried and thawed at Hale's whim. That was cool. Human-William and Host-William both felt very one dimensional, and what's the point of killing everyone on the planet (host and human and virtual host) if you are the last person alive? Why would that ever be a goal? What do you do next? Christina realizes that she controls a simulation that she mistook for a reality, but then she was not able to effect any change. Hale puts her pearl is put into the Sublime and now Christina/Deloris can control that and run trails in S5. Season Four showed no progress and no success for the main character, uggh. Human-Caleb was converted into a host and goes through over 250 revisions, but his human-ness survives and when he meets Human-C/Frankie he is able to emotionally support her and relish her success being her father. Very Cool. Host-Hale... well she is a villain and never evolved and felt very one dimensional. She couldn't see her main mistakes (hosts hated her world), the entire set of humans and hosts were headed for extinction. If Rehoboam knew the earth was headed towards extinction, why they hell couldn't Hale take that piece of information and try to avoid the extinction? Season Four's emotional tone (the emotional expressiveness of the characters) felt like Coke that has been left in the frig with the cap off for a month. Flat- it was hard to relate to.

I found the last few episodes to be anti-climactic and non-sensical. Surely Hale would be smart enough to build a fail safe into William so that he doesn't go on a crazy killing rampage, he especially shouldn't be able to kill Hale. Maeve, Bernard and to a lesser extent Stubb's death felt especially anti-climactic. It sort of felt like if Bernard has seen every move in every replay then there's no reason why he couldn't stop William from going out of control. Or at least kill him before he got the chance to go crazy. Then Hale who was the bad guy the whole season ended up being the protaganist in the last episode who had to stop the out of control William. It was hard to really care for her being that this whole thing was of her doing. Like as if she has the right to blame him for going all crazy. Her killing him just felt inevitable. There wasn't a sense of tension. It's just one slightly more powerful robot killing another. There was no emotion, no drama, it's just a sequence of events. The story telling felt like they were painting by numbers.\ Then the whole Dolores re-awakening going back to the original Westworld to do it all again didn't make sense and felt like filler material. Just a bit of nonsense pseudo philosophising. She has another chance to build a park the right way. So? There are no humans. What are the robots going to do in the park? Kill each other? For what? Or if not kill each other, what are they doing? Just live happily ever after? So lame.

Good points. I felt like they fumbled the ending and the last few episodes. Why did they spend so much time resurrecting Mauve. She didn't do anything productive and she was supposed to be their secret weapon. How could Bernard not see a way to win in all those simulations. All they had to do was take out William and not interfere with Hale before she was about to transcend. It didn't seem like the robot hideout was guarded at all.

@@MarkG998 Maeve doesn't even have to be there. If Bernard just needed to leave Halores a message, he could just wait in the Assertion room himself and leave the recording there. Ok i think the season 2 post credit scene is in the real world and Delores is running the fidelity tests trying to figure out a way for human consciousness to exist in the real world. If her sim in the sublime is successful human minds finally being imprinted onto hosts would be the only way a form of humans could exist in the real world. I think Delores is doing this at the same time she is running her sim in the sublime that we just saw at the end of season 4.

After last week's episode, I had a feeling the last one wouldnt be as good, because expectations would be high. However, I didnt expect to cringe so hard so often. They did Maeve dirty this season, like they did last season, Clem too. What was the point of Caleb and Frankie storyline, it felt like implausible filler. The reveal with Christina was very poorly executed and plot exposition through her and Hale talking to themselves was y/a novel bad. Westworld has had 2 recurring themes that were there from the pilot episode, "If you can't tell, does it matter?" and "Do you question the nature of your reality?" These are both deep philosophical topics and the show has explored them from the humans vantage point and the hosts vantage point. What this show has repeatedly failed at since season 2 is having any stakes. The initial season spent a lot time setting up questions around free will vs. determinism, themes that haven't really been explored since the Matrix trilogy, but didn't know what to do with them when it had our attention. Instead it recycled old plots and even gave up mid way through. This episode made it clear they had an ending they needed to get to and so they've just been moving the characters aimlessly around to get to this ending. I'm actually quite surprised to read people are excited for a season 5 that is told inside of a virtual world once again revisiting season 1 plot beats that have been done to death. Even if there's philosophical questions to explore about what it means to be alive, when you're just 0's and 1's, I have lost faith the current writing staff on Westworld will be capable of executing on it.

I also wanted to add that season 4 was extremely tedious to get through watching week to week. The amount of unnatural cryptic nonsense dialog meant to obscure details from us did not add anything to the season. I was fine with some of it at first, for example, the big C reveal, or Caleb getting turned into a bot. It just got old when every single plot beat this season needed to have some amount of obscurity. After watching the finale, I honestly think the writers themselves didn't know either.

I found the faux-superdeterminism of 'Westworld' much more enjoyable than the, IMO, failed attempt presented in the mini-series 'Devs.' Part of that was the acceptance of limited data-points in WW, and the cheats that carry over from season 1 (ala it only appears superdeterministic); and part of that is that this is being done by much greater computational powers within the confines of simulations. Irrespective of the reasons, I really enjoyed that aspect of this season. The 'who am I/are we?' has carried over so well from season to season. I'm glad they didn't go for the comedic ending of something saving humanity, instead embracing the tragedy. Part of me doesn't want there to be another season, I didn't have the problems Cortex seems to have had with the wrap-up, and this seems a worthy ending. My favourite episode for the season was Zhuangzi - a great implementation of the Taoist meditation.

I truly don't think everything will make sense until the end of s.5, the first season was written was keenly and so precise that I hope they had a real plan for the show. S.1 told a great story, touched on varies themes but a keen viewer could see what was happening in s.1 by e.4 , and there still exist another level of depth to the first season because there are varies times when we wittness Arnold thru Dolores and I still think that some how Arnold conciousness became the ghost in the machines network to help develope the bicameral mind the host need and I think that aspect will be touched on in s.5 as it's hints that we will go back and perhaps Dolores will not choose to kill , everyone gets it wrong Dolores decided to kill Arnold as all Arnold did was give her the choice, the same thing ford did was give her the choice both times She decided to kill them as a rash decision a newly conciousness being would make... the choice Berarnold is talking about is giving Dolores the choice of choosing to kill the humans or not after she got to experience what comes from it... now that she's been down the entire path she can make the decision with experience instead of raw emotion

Well... to me, any other season(s) coming up after this one won’t make any sens... the last episode of season 4 was for me surprisingly good, it felt like a pretty wrapping paper for a little gift. Overall I enjoyed it very much. This a side, I truly believe that some episodes were tossed out of this 4th season... We still don’t understand how Stubbs got repaired, no explanation was given about that, the replacement of the politicians was overly rushed to my taste... they’ve repaired Mæve to in fact just kill Jay... then, the fact they dedicated an entire episode to explain a host-human swap makes me think that similar episodes were removed from this season... and just for that I still think that the worst episode for me is episode 6... And finally, the story of Caleb... just why??? Seriously 😒 All this season felt rushed or maybe a bit too straight to the point, there is clearly a lack of filler episodes to smooth everything, if there’s a season 5 I think it’s going to be terrible :x really.

There was quite a bit of either unanswered questions or it raised more questions than answered. First, what was the point of trying to rescue Caleb? Not only did Franky almost die, but they didn't retrieve Caleb and lost Stubbs. I get that it will probably play a role in season 5, but it didn't accomplish anything for season 4. Second, when people transcend, do they go to the sublime or something else? Why wasn't the sublime more protected? It seemed super easy to break in and turn it off. Was New York the only city that humans lived on who were not outliers? Judging by the people who attacked William, there are hosts spread all across America and it looks like a lot of them survived. What is there fate? Why didn't Hale trust walk through the door to the sublime instead of destroying herself? Why did Hale only bring one gun and one round of bullets to confront William? She could have just pearl harboured William from behind and killed him? Instead she walks up to him to engage in conversation and then almost gets killed herself. You would think hosts would create bullet proof heads to protect their pearls.

Also why did they bring back mauve just to get killed. She wasn't much of a weapon that omnipotent Bernard made her out to be. Also, how come Bernard couldnt find a scenerio where he wins. @@CosmicCosmo1 I'm guessing it will be explained in season 5. But maybe Mauve allowed a distraction for William to shoot Hale? But it was pretty much worthless to bring Mauve back unless it turns out important that William wouldn't have betrayed Hale unless Mauve attacked her? But you are right, why couldn't Bernard have just killed William? Maybe because only William and Hale had the key to control the humans?

I don't know, I liked what this season was going for, but it felt like it very quickly ballooned from a small intimate plot to a world ending event without ever showing us the world ending. The Nolans have continuously said they have 5 seasons of story to tell, with an end-game in mind. As messy as this season was though, I do not trust the writers will be able to pull off a meaningful and satisfying final season. At this point it's sunk cost fallacy to think season 5 will be anything else but messy.

I found satisfying the ending of S04. It was obvious that Christina will be in journey of rediscovering herself and being again the first robot, Dolores. Teddy was her inner consciousness, so again we have a path of discovery like in S01. So, new Dolores will reboot entire Westworld, she will help in giving a new hope for humanity. Literally, it is seeing a beauty in this world. For Caleb I am not sure he will be in S05, the fidelity was not that successful even they managed to transfer the mind of a person on artificial body. Stubbs, he became futile and I am not feeling any connection with his character. Caleb's daughter is not developed enough to have a positive reaction on her, do I do not know what they are doing to do in 5th season. Halores got a sudden revelation so I am a bit dissatisfied how her character was developed and how she ended in too poetic way. MiB host has become more ruthless that the human version. I am looking forward for your video about S05 theories.

On rewatch William did leave the day he shot Hale. He drove and the show makes it clear that he engaged in gun fights during his travel lost whatever the original vehicle was and stole another. He drove from New York to Nevada. He managed to do all of this before Hale who flew. There is no world were this makes sense unless he teleported. William drove through cities and places that are in war. It makes no sense that he could drive at all as the highways would most likely have stalled cars everywhere.

I cannot get behind a rating of 7.5/10 here. I think you’re looking at this with rose tinted glssses, because this wasn’t good television and I think this episode actively hurt previous episodes with how narrative threads ended up going nowhere. This was 4/10 telly at its best, which is a shame because this season had a couple series best episodes. I think as a cohesive story season 3 may have been better. It was simpler and less interesting, but at least the ending felt earned.

I think if you follow the show's logic, it's impossible to directly map human consciousness onto a host. However, you can take a blank host and program it to get close to original human, enough to fool others. The final quote with Caleb at the end, "I'm not your father, he died long ago," gets at the deeper philosophical question the show could have spent this season exploring, that any copy of a human is still a copy. It could fool someone else, but it's not the original person continuing on. I was so bored of the recycled Caleb Delos sub-plot. We've seen this breakdown story, we do not need to revisit this.

IT was one of the best Episodes this season the ending was absolut Beautiful season 5 could be phenomal. But i agree Maeve and Bernhard DESERVES a Happy ending they are the Most important Character. What i dont Like Clementine acting Out of Character "ha lets kill all Humans when i get finally free..." Bs Story Just to kill the good Robot Stubbs Later on because Bernhard saw IT. And why are the fly Humans blood Red before IT was Green. Also why has William Infinite Bullets while other Not. I did Not Like Williams Evolution IT was too predictable. I Hope for season 5 Anthony Hopkins Back in sublime and that Caleb saves meave and Bernhard. Also why did Bernhard Made Copy of them? For the Sublime Later because He know they die but in the New world delores Made live again? Alot or Plot Holes and poorly explained Story Lines Overall worst season but still high quality Entertainment. Ending was emotional hopefully they do IT right again and get free in the ending and she finds real Teddy Later on. I Wonder If the Simulation Delores IS the og Pearl from season 1 or did she get destroyed complete i dont remember. I also wanted to be Caleb a Robot with a Human mind First success with Bugs.

How come Bernard never had problems with his body. He never needed a fidelity test after Arnaud died. Did Ford know something other creators did not. May he succeeded because Ford created him slightly different from the original. He has a different name. Maybe the host body rejection rises from the existential angst the duplicated personality experiences as they know they are already dead but somehow alive. Maybe each creation must be an unique individual to continue to exist.

Spoiler warning After this Season Serac is one of my favorite characters because he (actually Rehoboam) ironically predicted everything and truly tried to save the world ("in a twisted manner") .... also Dolores even considering to use a dangerous AI like Solomon for uploading a new "strategy" but instead just deleting Rehoboam is what caused the events in Season 4 in the first place. Also it is the final proof that westworld never had good guys to begin with, except the two tech guys at the park and Caleb. Season 5 in my opinion will definitely be a horror movie, because humans are literally extinct by now except for the frozen Outliers where Solomon is stored. Ford is actually laughing his Ass off by now and Logan was right all a long, even if he supported Westworld at first. It is starting to remind me of the Second Renaissance (Animatrix). Also digital copys of every human in a virtual world is pure nightmare fuel by now- - correct me if I'm wrong - -
