Earlier in the year, our Executive Producer David Conley and two of our VFX Supervisors, Erik Winquist and Stephen Unterfranz, joined Shadow in the Cloud director Rosanne Liang on a panel for the DGA Virtual Production event. They had an open conversation about modern virtual production technology, including two projects with different LED workflows, and discussed in detail the learnings and challenges they experienced with some of our earlier LED virtual production projects.

It's not often you can get 3 artists to sit down and articulate this much about a complex topic with such consistancy and clarity across all of them. Great video. Great hosts.

Hope to use virtual production and weta digital for my killer Battle of Britain screenplay. Of course I will try to shoot in the real thing as much as possible. :)

@@ComproDesigns he's talking about The Volume that ILM built with Epic Games (Unreal Engine). However, he's also missed the point since this is about virtual production at a low budget.

Imagine the things they can do without the constraints of polygon counts and bake time for lighting. With unreal engine 5 introducing the lumen and nanite technologies, I can see exponential jumps in workflow for anyone trying to do virtual production. It's a wonderful world we live in :)

It would be interesting from a DIT perspective to do a massive test with the spectrometer to measure the change in colour depending on LED wall source distance from subject. For me, the magenta skin tone is horrific but my biggest concern is the screen tearing and visible artifacting, one must also be careful with use of shutter angle given the frequency of the LED panel's themselves. Perhaps testing with live grading the Unreal footage and removing luminosity of specific hues (such as that magenta) may improve the spill before needing to grade it out. Ideally that would all be tested in prep, along with every single light that would be used in the show.
