Here's a complete broadcast of a home-run derby contest between the Cubs' Dave Kingman and the Philadelphia Phillies' Mike Schmidt as carried over the Cubs' longtime TV outlet, WGN Channel 9, and emanating from Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, PA. The announcers are Jack Brickhouse and Lou Boudreau.
Includes:
Opening, with sponsor billboard for United Airlines, Pepsi-Cola, and True Value Hardware Stores
Jack lays out Schmidt's and Kingman's stats so far this year, then goes to Lou who interviews Kingman with Cubs manager Joe Amalfitano, and Schmidt with Phillies bench coach Bobby Wine, on the field; both will be pitching to their respective sluggers
Commercials for:
United Airlines (with jingle sung to tune of "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines"; father and son fly a toy plane, then Dad goes to cockpit as captain to fly in real life)
United Airlines (with Dave Kingman)
Mountain Dew soft drink
Jacobsen snow throwers
As the contest is about to start, Lou mentions the rules for each slugger (during which the Phillie Phanatic sneaks up on Kingman), then calls the play-by-play as "Kong" steps up for his turn, followed by Mike, in the equivalent of the 1st inning, followed by back and forth in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings (during which Lou speaks with Dave), then the 6th before the next break
Commericials for:
United Airlines (repeat of first and second ads)
Quick Set Extra Security Deadlock - available at True Value Hardware Stores (ending voiceover by Pat Summerall)
Mountain Dew
Play resumes between the two sluggers in the (equivalent) 7th inning (whereby Kingman speaks to Lou again as Schmidt is at bat), then the 8th (in which Lou interviews Mike) and 9th, after which the contest is finally over
Commercials for:
2nd repeat of United Airlines ads
True Value Hardware Stores - Master Mechanic Hand Tools (with Pat Summerall)
Mountain Dew
Ending sponsor billboard for United Airlines, Pepsi-Cola and True Value Hardware Stores (voiceover by Jack Brickhouse, who then lays out crew . . . )
Produced by Arne Harris
Directed by Steve Silverman

Mike Schmidt is the greatest 3rd Basemen to ever play the game. I am 65 years old and I watched Mike's whole career with the Phillies. The day he said he was retired he was crying and so was I. There's nobody these days that does what he does with his swing at bat. Mike didn't swing as hard as he could. I remember Mike saying to use the energy from the power in the pitchers fast ball. The pitch is coming over the plate in the upper 90s. Just swing so that the fat part of the bat hits that ball. The energy from the 95+ fast ball. Will send the ball.

Can’t believe I found this because I was there for this with my dad. I was in 11th grade at Father Judge high school in Philly! I miss those days so much 😢

As a huge Phillies (and Mike Schmidt) fan, I can't believe I never saw this before (or even knew it existed). Maybe that's because it was only broadcast on WGN in Chicago - the announcers are clearly biased in favor of Kingman, and disappointed in his performance in losing to "Smit" (as the announcer kept mispronouncing his name). A rare and interesting baseball "artifact" - thanks for sharing it!

Who is here today in 2024 after listening to Schmidt tell the story while the As crush the Phillies?

Kingman is my alltime favorite player. I remember that 79 season going to Wrigley and having his homeruns sail over our heads in left field. Wouldn't trade those memories for nothing!

This was essentially a dead ball era when less than 30 homers was enough to win the HR title in any given year.

I wonder if Tommy Lasorda had an opinion on Kingman’s performance. 😊

This is very cool! In all of my random knowlege of late 70's Cubsdom, I never knew they had a homerun hitting contest. Kingman actually seems like a nice guy here.

I love how whoever is announcing, is saying Mike Smith..Lol, rather than Mike Schmidt. Also, Joey Amalfitano is now 90, while Bobby Wine is now 85 (will turn 86 in September).

Oh, wow! I was there that night as a nineteen year old and sitting in the outfield section where most of the HR's landed. In those days the Phillies would have nights dedicated to a town in the Delaware Valley and for this game it was dedicated to my hometown of Pennsville, NJ. I had forgotten this HR contest took place during it until I saw our (then) massive high school marching band being shown before the first commercial break. This is wild....thanks!
