Got a pair of these myself, had them for years. They REALLY don't like to be tucked into a corner like that, hence the "bass heavy" sound. If placed well away from walls to their sides, backed up against a solid wall, not a partition wall (approximately 10cm or so) then set your equaliser, bass and treble to middle/neutral you can't go wrong. They easily fill a room with a natural sounding, erm, sound. Oh, and a nice set of heavy stands will help isolate them from the floor too (my stands are weighted with sand).

@@bassa69 Probably a bit deep (as in the front to back dimension) for a desk, but the sound is more than decent for the price (gone down since I bought mine years ago), they're monitors after all. Movie watching is good (able to rumble the low's etc), but obviously without supporting surround speakers it'll only be stereo.

I bought the newer 10.1 and have the 9.1 for a small spare room 2 channel stereo setup after breaking in the 10.1, I decided to keep the 9.1 and sell the 10.1, the 9.1 not only sounds better, they are front ported placement is easier , looks and built way better and the bass is much more tight and punchy, these are keepers, Multi award winners. These are Wi-Fi and not Chi-Fi like the new ones.

Very useful review. I've been looking at getting either these or 10.1's and an avr as an upgrade over a 5.1 edifier s550, and had wondered if the lack of low frequency extension would leave it feeling lacking (50hz vs 20hz). Even in the video I can tell the bass is very powerful! Perhaps too much so if it's drowning out the mids and highs... more power is great, but more detail was the goal. Definitely given me something to think about

I still have my 9.1's and brought them when they came out around 2005/2006 and I can assure you they are not £100 speakers and they also came in 5 colours and I brought the Cherry ones which were the most expensive. I paid £250 for a pair and the other colours were around £220 a pair. I also brought the Wharfedale 250W Subwoofer in the same colour which was £50 more than all the other colours and use them in my 7.1 AV setup with my Yamaha AV AV Receiver. Obviously over the years they would of come down to the price you paid for them like most speakers. The demo by the way did not do the speakers any real justice and that was basically because of how the speakers were set up and being in a corner did not help either. But to be honest you can place them nearer to a wall because they do have the bass ports on the front and not the back. But it's always best to give them a bit of space from the wall. They was perhaps a bit stifled and claustrophobic perhaps with the only convenient space that you could squeeze them into and demo them, and of course the mic was not the best to demo them either. But I used to have floor standing speakers for my old stereo set ups and found even with the bookshelf speakers they work really great for stereo and 5.1 when positioned right. The only thing I have really changed since I brought 2 pairs of these speakers and the subwoofer back in 2005/2006 was my Yamaha Amp I brought in 2005. To which I replaced it with a Yamaha AV Receiver in 2015 to which I upgraded to allow for Blu Ray HD formats. I am well happy with my 9.1 Diamonds and see no reason to change them at all. They are all still in mint condition too as I have looked after them very well.

That is the best diamond, wharfedale ever produced... later versions don't sound like it... I use them with a 13watt hi end DIY-kit tube amb (1000$) and they sound fantastic, the bass with my amp is excellent, very refined and detailed, yet flat... THese speakers have a hi end class sound as long as you pair them with a nice amp. Their price is a joke for the sound they give... I would recommend a cheap rotel amp.

Mate...What amp are you using? I recommended these 9.1, with the SW150 subwoofer, to a young guy to use with his 'Tangent Ampster BT II' amplifier. I've not heard the speakers...just based on reviews for value for money. The Tangent amp has bluetooth and a subwoofer line out so great for an entry level system and spotify streaming from phone etc... I was giving advice for when he wants to upgrade from some crappy old 'spring terminal' speakers he's using :-)

Hi Weston, Nice honest review. I am trying to buy a realistic sounding pair of bookshelf speakers for my media room. I have a Denon RCD-M41DAB system in my media room I am very pleased with the performance of such a small unit for the price, (About £350). It does such a lot for its compact size. I have connected it to a pair of Teac LS-H250 bookshelf speakers similar to your reviewed Wharfdales, but the reflex ports are positioned to the rear. The sound is not bad, but lacks mid-range clarity. Can you suggest book shelf speakers that will provide a better overall sound stage? When I compare the same source music with my main sound system, (In a different room) I despair at the difference in quality. I am not particularly a Denon fanatic, I have just found through extensive listening trials and the systems I have personally tested for me the Denon range has come out on top. To understand where I am coming from, my main sound system provides quite an amazing sound. However costing around £3,500.00 it’s no surprise. It’s based on a Denon class “A” amplifier, with a Denon CD920 CD deck. They feed into a pair of floor standing Wharfdale E70s. The sound is crystal clear with a well-defined sound stage, a great well detailed mid-range and an infra base that you not only hear, but feel physically. It’s even possible to pick out where individual instruments are located across the sound stage.

I own a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 7.1s but they are held together with 6 huge bolts as the cabinate is slightly damaged. They sound fine but there is mechanical noise & port noise when pushed a bit. Hello there. First off thanks for the video, l found it helpful. If you don't mind my asking, l'm considering to buy these, or the Yamaha NS-F51. My rational is 'kind of' putting the money of the speaker stands onto floorstand speakers. If you were to spend 200 pounds, which speakers would you buy? (l don't like 'bass shy' sound.) l'll pair them to an Onkyo TX-NR818. Thanks in advance!

@@peterbustin2683 my point wasn’t that your opinion was wrong. It’s that you, in the comments section, gave the most irrelevant criticism. My point was that you’re not better than him for liking floyd as music is subjective, therefore you can’t criticise his choice of music in a video that’s nothing to do with you or pink floyd. The only reason you criticised it is because you see liking pink floyd as a virtue and you like feeling that you are better than people that like that kind of music but in reality it’s extremely popular and many people like it

The reason for the loss in bass is due to your room causing 'modes' and standing waves. Moving the speaker from the wall simply changed the interaction between waves on the parallel walls. The bass is 'in' the speaker, its just not placed right in the room.

Thank you for the review! Could you perhaps help me with some advise? I am trying to build a modest budget, yet solid setup for professional use in a tea house. It'll be used to create a chill, zen atmosphere in a tea house where people will be enjoying high quality tea while chilling in a bean-bag/coffee table saloon. We are looking for a surface of some 50 to 70 m2. For that, i don't need super powerful speakers, since the volume shouldn't really go high, considering the ambiance. I've done some research online, on some forums and also in RL shops around town, and so far i've gotten quite mixed results. The obvious "best solution" is to get a quite expensive 100v amp and a bunch of ceiling mounted speakers. However, with that we are looking at some 1k to 1.5k euros easy. Our budget is smaller, trying to stay around 500 to 1k for everything. The other option, as suggested by some people, is to get a decent amp, that's not "pro" quality, but still high quality, and some very decent shelf speakers. That's how i ended up here. So far the build is looking like this: 1. Yamaha A-S500 amp - picked for being of good brand, high quality (very good reviews) and simplicity - no fancy stuff, it just does music. 2. A pair (or two) of these Diamond 9.1s - Picked for the price/quality ratio. 3. The feed will come from a PC - MP3s, FLAC, online radios etc... The questions are: 1. Will this build even work? If not, what's better to change, the amp or the speakers? 2. Can this amp run 4 of these speakers? 3. Guess this is kinda subjective, but do you think this will work for our goals? We are also open for any suggestions... P.S. You mention that for some 20 bucks more you can get much better - 20 bucks won't make or break our business... which speakers did you have in mind? Cheers!

Hey, great review! I was wondering if you could help me out. I'm looking to make the move from computer speakers to a proper setup like you have. I am a complete beginner so have no clue on how it works. From what I've read and heard I would need a couple speakers(these look great) and an amplifier. I would like to connect the amplifier to my PS4. Which would only be possible through an optical cable. I am therefore looking for an amplifier with an optical input. The ones you have recommended to the bloke below don't seem to have one. Any advice? I would really appreciate it. My budget is pretty low so I can't afford any serious kit.I would also like the option to be able to add a couple more speakers to the amplifier in the future. Thanks.

I think it's less powerful than the Pioneer you recommended but will it still do the job? Bass is important to me. These wharfedale diamonds that you reviewed seem to pack a punch. ***** So they will work just if connected to the RCA inputs of the A/V and not through the dedicated connections for Home Theatre (Front Speakers - Center - Rear)?
@Vylkeer
@Vylkeer 9 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks, that was really esplicative. By the way the A/V Receiver I'm talking about is my Onkyo TXNR-636. So I can either use it as a front speakers or rear surround speakers via terminals, right?

+Vylkeer you can use an AV receiver but for stereo sound you really wouldnt want to, a good stereo amp will always sound better.
@binarydredd

You're getting much more bass reflection than you should putting them in the corner like that. No wonder it sounds "boomy" - really bad placement.

hi what you think? this speakers is is same like krk rokit? or thats a little better?
@caayotee
@caayotee 8 жыл бұрын
KRK Rokit speakers are active studio monitors. They have the amplifier built in. The Wharfedales are passive speakers. You need an external stereo amplifier or av receiver to power these speakers. On the sound signature, you cannot really compare Rokit to Wharfedales as Studio monitors are meant for audio production and are clinically accurate to the source material. They are not meant to make your music sound great. If it is badly recorded, it'll sound bad. The Wharfedales are tuned to make your music sound good, even if they arent recorded at the highest quality. Both have a different use case, so depends on your requirements. Hope that helps.

Mate, the speakers only sound as good as the mic you're using. It doesn't prove anything. If they're ''bass heavy'' maybe try a different amp?
@ericcrawford2697
@ericcrawford2697 9 жыл бұрын
***** Fair enough. Whatever mic you used is crap though, and anyone listening will have different audio systems. There's some pro reviews on here that are far more informative and use decent mics. Just sayin. Innit?
