Wharram Percy is one of the best known and well-preserved deserted medieval villages in England. The earthworks evidence two manor houses and enough peasant houses for around 200 inhabitants, together with a church and a water mill. The population was greatly reduced by the Black Death in the 14th century, before the rising price of wool saw landowners kicking tenants off their land to convert it to pasture. This was a disaster for many communities that had lived by the plough, and Wharram Percy was no exception.
An excavation at the village in the 1960s unearthed the skeletal remains of at least 10 individuals. They were buried in a pit and date from the 11th-13th centuries. But what was unusual about the bones was that they showed evidence of perimortem breaking, sharp force marks and burning...
