Constitution Day is the national day of Norway and is an official public holiday observed on 17 May every year. May 17 is referred to as Syttende Mai, Seventeenth of May in english. Nasjonaldagen or National Day , or Grunnlovsdagen, Constitution Day in english.
May 17 commenorates the signing of the constitution in 1814, when Norway declared its independence from Sweden. It is the most important date in the Norwegian calendar.

Norway's independence day is May 8th (from when WWII was over in 1945). 17th of May is our national day when we celebrate our constitution (written in 1814), we even call it Norway's birthday, even though the kingdom of Norway was founded almost a thousand years before that, in 872, and the union with Sweden was dissolved in 1905 :)
