These last two years I've been worrying about fast fashion and what it does to our planet but at some point I noticed that I was addicted to thrifting... And accumulated A LOT again. I'm trying to balance this and find the healthy spot at the moment. It's like: we know that fast fashion isn't helping at all but we can't just transfer the addiction to something else and keep buying recklessly because it's cheap even if it's second handed. I know that this wasn't the original topic of the video but it made me think about it. Happy new year.

I’m far from being a minimalist, but that’s simply because I have a lot of occasion wear which I usually need (work wear, ball gowns, Dirndl dresses, etc...). What helped me a lot with my day to day wardrobe is writing a list of the things I miss in my wardrobe - and then I don’t buy any substitute until I have found the perfect piece for me!

I love your clarity! I went on a style journey in 2020 - hired a stylist to help me "improve" my every day style. And I, too, did a lot of expensive experimenting that did not leave me in a better place. While I do have a much better sense of my style, I hate how much I purchased in trying to find it...and I am keeping a very small percentage of the new purchases. Turns out that some of the oldest items in my closet are my favorites and I have yet find anything that compares to replace them. Light bulb! Those things define my style. So I have been working to make sure that I can wear those favorites with a few basics. Another realization based on lifestyle - start with your footwear and build up. Not a great idea to create outfits and then realize you need a new pair of shoes to complete every outfit! Thank goodness shoes sell well on Poshmark!

You blew my mind saying that our items define our style, not us. I wanted to protest for a moment until I thought about it and realized that you are exactly right!! For various reasons this year I needed to start wearing linen pants and shorts even though I hated the look of them. Slowly though my entire wardrobe has changed to go with the linen pants and now I actually have a cohesive, put-together style that I look great in. It is a 1970's "hippie"-vibe style with lots of golds, greens, tans and burnt orange - it is not a style that I was ever drawn to before but now that my items dictated that I adopt that style I have never had better style, or been happier with my clothes than I am right now!

The point about not being able to control your style in certain ways as much as you think you can...way too true! I'm doing a no-buy year for 2021 because I've had some massive insecurities about how to present myself/my style and I really think that buying fewer things should really help me sort out what my true style is. Turning 30 and moving to America actually kinda impacts how you dress. Who knew

You've provided such helpful insight! It's so true that once you have your sense of personal style and level of quality, you don't find as many items when shopping; which is a good thing because it makes decision making while shopping so much more clear and easy, and you end up bringing less junk into your home that you won't get use out of.

Totally agree about feeling the pain of getting rid of items - we are currently decluttering and trying to become more minimalist, and the ideas of personal style/quality over quantity are so important in order to avoid some of the mistakes we have made. Thanks for the inspiration!

I have the total opposite issue, I'm wayy too picky, style wise as well as money wise, which always results in me not having nearly enough clothing. I can never buy something without feeling guilty for spending too much money, especially if it's someone else's, like my parents or something. Teach me your ways!😂

I thought it was fascinating that our purchases can change our styles, especially the most expensive ones. I also love the idea that the more expensive a purchase, the more we are forced to focus on our personal style. I guess that is similar in a way to paring down one's wardrobe.

when i was 15 i wanted to buy myself a real good wintercoat and found one in a city 150km away from my hometome. it was 150€ which was insanely expensive for my budget at that age so i drove back (the train was free cause i was a student) 3 times (!!!) to build up the courage of spending that much money, take photos and showed it to my family multiple times. i loved this coat to pieces, got it repaired like 8 times and then gave it to a smaller friend after it wouldnt fit right anymore... i totally get what you are saying. i loved it even more because it put me through the struggle of being in the train 3 whole days :D i was very sure that i really liked it

The bigger the wardrobe, the more ( normally cheap) experiments you make. I had a time when I'd buy strange colors or forms because "they may suit me". No, they never did, I wore those items rarely and got rid of them during my first big purge. You're right, there's little room for experiments if you have a small wardrobe and want to keep it that way!

For me it is not about being comfortable in finding my style, but being sure I won't change size/needed clothes. Honestly, I know my style is. I know what my favorite and most worn clothes are. But I am not going to buy expensive versions of them because 1. I don't know if I will get 2 sizes up (like this year) or 2 sizes down (if I will be able to get back to previous activities after I heal my injuries or loose weight because of eating less caused by seasonal allergies) in the next year of two and 2. I don't know if I will have a chance to wear them all the time based on were my life gets, since you don't wear the same clothes working in teaching or a lab with a coat over it or in a job that requires smart clothes, and there is a chance I will be in all three types of jobs with my degree in the next couple years until I find a long-term job. It is not that I don't care, but I don't want to spend a lot only to have to resell items for 10% of the price I paid or even give them for free to someone.

I agree that you quickly adapt for higher stress choices, but I don’t think you should start purchasing blindly. There are simple guidelines you can go by, such as color theory. For example, I have a soft complexion- meaning my skin and hair are similar colors- so I know I look best is soft colors like olive green instead of emerald green which would look amazing on a clear complexion. I also know I have a neutral skin tone, which means I can wear both cool and warm tones. Someone with olive skin, however, doesn’t look good in a pinky nude because they have warm skin and pinky nude is cool toned. Warm and cool show up in every color, including white. White is also part of the soft and clear coloring. I look best in a soft, off white instead of a clear, bright white.

It’s rare for any clothing donations to be accepted where I live, there is such a glut already. Many charities will have only, say, one day per quarter when they accept them, then, they go through and throw the majority directly in the huge dumpsters in the back, often without even glancing at the contents. When I buy an item, I really have to consider that it has a 99% chance of ending in a landfill. That’s one reason I don’t buy synthetics, they won’t biodegrade for thousands of years. But, honestly, comfort is the main factor for me in refusing synthetics.

I did really like your point about buying one thing a month though! This month I'm buying thrifted Zara boots. I know that seems like fast fashion for some but in my context it's a big splurge, costing around 12 hours of working wage. They are gorgeous and barely used and obviously I'll take good care of them considering the cost.

The planet will survive and adapt, the real question is will we humans? Not to mention thousands of other species. We just can’t keep gobbling resources, polluting, and filling the earth and oceans with trash. We live in the era of mega-consumption, our descendants, if we have any that survive in the long-term, will look back and wonder how we could be so thoughtless and irresponsible.
