Defining "healthspan" & its role in living longer: • Defining "Healthspan" ...
Longevity This Week is a series of episodes discussing new findings or articles relevant to geroscience, longevity, and healthspan that may have popped up in the news.
This week we're featuring Richard Morgan, a 93-year-old rowing champion whom the Washington Post recently described as being "as fit as a 40-year-old". We talk about Richard's diet, exercise routine, and other aspects of his lifestyle that may have led to his enviable state in older age. We also discuss a recent Wall Street Journal article about how Americans are spending more of their lives in poor health, and about how "sickspan"-the amount of time we spend sick near the end of our lives-might change in years to come.

Hi, I'm Matt Kaeberlein. I spent the first few decades of my career doing scientific research into the biology of aging, trying to understand the finer details of how humans age in order to facilitate translational interventions that promote healthspan and improve quality of life. Now I want to take some of that knowledge out of the lab and into the hands of people who can really use it.
On this channel I talk about all things aging and healthspan, from supplements and nutrition to the latest discoveries in longevity research. My goal is to lift the veil on the geroscience and longevity world and help you apply what we know to your own personal health trajectory. I care about quality science and will always be honest about what I don't know. I hope you'll find these videos helpful!

Matt, 72 year old here, and also was a participant in your Rapa study with Dr. Green. Taking 6mgs weekly. Good to see you in the podcast business!! Will be watching regularly. Rowing is my cardio exercise of choice and have been doing it for three years now and pretty much average about 35,,000 meters a week a little over 20 miles. You can do both HIIT and steady state Zone 2 on it. Rowing has a number of advantages over biking and running -- it is a full body workout that is not hard on your knees and the rowing stroke engages the entire musculature of your back, and requires good arm and grip strength to maintain the rowing stroke. Also doing compound lift training -- squat, deadlift, overhead press, bench press. I am squatting 200 lbs, deadlifting 300. Did a Dexa last fall -- ALIM was very good, as was bone density, but fat % not optimal. Working on that. Finally, as you no doubt know, good genetics is a key to longevity, and I would not be surprised if Richard's longevity is hereditary. Of course his physical condition is not -- he has made that happen. My father lived until he was 93, but the last seven years of his marginal decade were not good. Genetic disposition to longevity remains, but lack of physical function can really take over. For me a stark reminder of the difference between healthspan and lifespan.

I would think that even people eating a processed fuel diet are "sick," even if they don't have a specific disease that could be identified, they could be considered to have a silent sickness. I agree that defining "sick" would be very hard to define.

Truly astounding. After 5 years of athletic level cycling in my early 50s, I decided to taper down, to reduce risk of long term damage. Should I jump back on the saddle now?

Great conversation to be had with your doctor (? your physical therapy MD if you had one). Safety first but as often as I see folks overdoing it I see people being held back by false beliefs. Get checked out and see how much you can move safely. For healthspan... and quality of life!

Great Idea for a series, very well done. I would love for you to become more popular. Looking at algorithmic success stories, I'd mention Sabine Hossenfelder, a German physicist who also does a regular "news" segment. She has over 1 million subscribers. I don't know if you're open to producing a series that has more of a "sugar high" effect with viewers, but I don't think it qualifies as selling out if you experiment with formats that might be more popular with a mass audience.

On protein: We don't have a control, but studies indicate that exercise is what maintains muscle mass vs extra protein. So he could very well have skipped the protein shake and done just as well. Basically, it's the exercise and a junk free diet.

Great to see you doing these podcasts! I would like to see a couple of episodes on supplements for health span, with clinical studies to support benefits, Such as rapamycin etc. NIH just did a conference with series on supplements, any thoughts? Also would you discuss the likelihood/timing of rapamycin being released for healthspan? Are you able to share some insights of your dog rapamycin study? So many questions….Thanks!

Very informative, as usual. You mentioned that you don't think Richard truly reversed his biological age, which is obvious from the way he looks like. That made me wondering: do you have knowledge about how much the crosstalk between skin and the rest of the body influences ageing? It seems to me that improvements in dermatology/plastic surgery (will) make it increasingly easier for people to look way younger than they really are. Do you think that this will have significant/modest/no effect at all at systemic level? And as a corollary, will it become more difficult to estimate someone's biological age, based on how they look? (As an example, Bryan Johnson looks - to me at least - younger now than on images from his early-to-mid 30s. I would assume you don't consider what he does truly age reversal, so is it just cosmetic?) I guess my overarching question is: do you have a sense of how much improvements in certain organs could affect the whole system? Would we get to a point where advances in dermatology, ophthalmology, dentistry, organ 3D printing, if you will, might be able to tip the scales so much by influencing other organs via this constant crosstalk that presumably happens between systems that we won't need a "whole-body" solution or the only way to true rejuvenation goes through treatments that hit everything at once?

Great discussion - just throw more ideas to and fro - currently it is more of a 90% vs 10% show and it would be better to have a 70% vs 30% discussion. but I am looking forward to your next discussion!!! Very interesting!!! As mentioned before - looking forward to hear your thoughts on Taurin and GlyNAC etc. even though I am well aware of your critical attitude towards supplements ;-)

Hi Doctor Kaeberlein, I have done a Dexa scan this week and there are a few things that stand out to me. I'm almost 43 and my T-score is -1.1 (z-score is -0.7) and I just barely fall in osteopenia. The last few years I have been taking extra vitamine D and also take glucosamine. I try to eat healthy. Is there anything else you could recommend? Perhaps increase calcium intake? My Personal physician says that as a man I don't need to worry about osteoporosis and doesn't believe in many measurements. He says almost all vitamin measurments are based on arbitrary numbers. My Total body fat is 8.8% but my Android is 18.3% fat. The dietician that I spoke with says that I don't have to worry unless it's over 30%. Is she correct? I feel that there is a large gap between the 8.8% total body fat and 18.3% in the belly. I do lack definition in my abs and chest while I workout daily for years now. Am I metabolically challenged? What can I do? My apologies for my english since Dutch is my native lange. PS. I'd be happy to share the rest of my results with you (if it's made anonymous... I'll also have to translate them since they are in dutch) Thank you!
