Stephanie Beatriz had an amazing year - aside from Brooklyn 99, she was Carla in "In the Heights" and the voice of Mirabel in "Encanto" before voicing Lady Kima. Bobby Hall - Logic - had a Grammy nominated song ("1-800-273-8255") and is a good friend of Ashley Johnson's boyfriend. It was weird to hear Sunil as Gilmore, but he knocked it out of the park.

I know everyone was pushing you to watch this earlier but I think you made a good decision to wait so knowing who they were didn't affect your watching. As a critter fan, I missed hearing Matt do all the voices but the casting was so good I was ok with it. Now we just need Season 2!

We will never get tired of hearing Matt do all the sounds and voices, but hearing other voiceactors that they pick for the characters is so insanely well done that even Matt couldn't do it. I hope you will watch the other "making of" videos that thisone was part of. One of the things I really love of the "making of" vids is the music in each and everyone.

So they started doing the voice work all in the same studio, which is something that basically never happens, but they loved it because they got to feed off each other like a regular performance. Then covid happened, and they couldn't record anything for a bit. Eventually they all put together home studios or had access to private studios, and had to record remotely, but some of the time they managed to do it while doing video calls to try and get the "full cast acting" thing as best they could. That's why some of them are recording in closets (clothes work surprisingly well as sound dampening material). Hopefully they get to do the voice work the way they wanted to for season two.

Fun facts: Sam (Scanlan) Riegel's day job is as a voice director at Disney, so he already had a relationship with David Tennant and Tony Hale from previous work together, which I'm sure helped grease the wheels (David was actually first to sign on!). Also, the two children at the shale steps (Episode 1) were voiced by Sam's son and Liam (Vax) O'Brien's daughter, and the little girl who ends up.on the Sun Tree was voiced by Sam's daughter (😬) - must have made it all the more poignant for them......

Since you mentioned Diggle earlier, you might recognize Kelly Hu as China White in the early seasons of Arrow.

It is funny that most of the voice acting was done in a closet. It's because they did it mid-pandemic. So mostly every parts of the main cast is done in their home, in their closet. The rest of the cast, like David Tennant or Dominic, who had miner roles they shoot at last, so they were able to use a studio.

My recommendation would be to watch any of the side by side comparisons, particularly the sun tree moment or the Briarwood fight. If you like that and time passes quickly you will definitely enjoy the stream. If it seems a little slow then it will be a slog to get through hundreds of hours, so it may not be worth your time. Some people like tea and some people like coffee, and that's ok wither way

Further viewing recommendations of Vox Machina before trying to binge the entire first campaign: 1) There are several side-by-side comparisons of the original campaign with the animated series that folks have been posting on KZfaq, definitely check those out (also shows how they adapted/reworked things slightly to work for the animated series; 2) CR hosted some watch-alongs on their Twitch channel when the animated series first dropped, and they give a lot of background info - you can check out just the host-moderated segments between episodes here on KZfaq (go to the Critical Role channel), or you can subscribe to their Twitch channel and also hear their in-time reactions while watching the series (although you won't hear the episode, just their reactions); 3) Before you dip your toe into the full campaign, you could check out one of their one-shot sessions to get a feel for how they interact and play together. I recommend the Level 17 Battle Royale between Grog, Keyleth, Vex, Percy, and Tarryon Darrington (who will show up next season), where in a dream they have to fight each other to the death. Another good one is the Winter's Crest episode (Campaign 1 Ep 36) which takes place at the conclusion of the Briarwood campaign where Whitestone is coming back to life and they hold a festival - no fighting in this one but lots of fun moments with the cast. Or any of the non-VM one-shots are also fun, but these give you more with your favorite characters. Hope you enjoy whatever avenue you choose to explore! :-D

The voice of Sovereign Uriel is also King Ezekiel in Walking Dead, and does the voice of Cyborg in pretty much every animated version, including Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go. He plays a wonderful guest character on two episodes in Campaign 2 of Critical Role and is a personal friend of many of the CR cast. Because they've all been acting and directing in the VO community for years, they know so many amazing people. For example, Sam directed David Tenant in his work as Scrooge McDuck, which was their entry to getting him.

The campaigns are so much fun to watch, their currently in campaign 3. The comics are also a lot of fun and cover what we didn't see on their streams

It was great that they didn't have Matt play a ton of the characters, but his voices are very distinct and varied. Despite the fact that I think it was a good call to cast other people, Matt is a phenomenal voice actor.

Want to see Matt utterly break the cast with one of his voices? So in terms of shows, watch a one-shot by yourself to get a feel for how the stream works. There are tons, from SciFi space horror to Christmas Crack to Fun Times With Bears. This will give you an idea for length, general format and if watching the streamed campaign might be something you want to do. If you don't want VM spoilers, Campaign 2 is the best way to go with veeeeeeeery few (I can think of three instances) ties to Vox Machina. Campaign 3 is currently on going and has 17 episodes as of 3/22/2022 if you'd rather watch concurrently/ have fewer episodes, though definite spoilers for Vox Machina. If you want to know about Campaign 2 but maybe not WATCH all 556:34:24 hours of stream or 483:40:09 hours of gameplay (thanks critrolestats), I recommend watching the Critical Recap Animated here on KZfaq. Getting the voice of Azula for Delilah was absolutely perfect perfect casting and Khary Payton was Cyborg in teen titans and Ezekiel from Walking Dead

Watching Matt create a rando character on the spot was a highlight. Even the cast would hold their breath waiting for the accent and persona.

If you like comics I would recommend checking out the Vox Machina Origins comics, they tell the story of how the characters met each other and became a group

I think I found it more jarring whenit was Matt doing the voices, sometimes Lord B would be talking and all I could hear was Matt. Not that they didn't do a good job, I am just so familiar with their voices that I can hear it. The main cast also did a lot of the backgroud voices and screams, so it was funny to catch those sometimes as well. They did a talk show summing up 3 epsidoes at a time, and in one Sam(scanlan) was on he talked about how they got some of these people to agree and what their reaction was when Critters reacted to having them join our world. I found it really interesting since Sam was in charge of casting.

many voice actors who record from home and can't afford or choose not to have a dedicated studio/room in their house, use the closet because it often is the best soundproofed space in the house, what with all the fabrics... ambient noise and passing traffic can ruin a take, so... it's a clever choice.

I'm really excited for season 2, and I really want to know who will be voicing some of the big NPCs that debut in that arc. It would be funny if all 5 of the Chroma Conclave dragons are voiced by actors from Doctor Who, since David Tennant voiced the first one. Lmao

Just a quick, fun stat... Although they don't all have voices, Matt created 619 characters for campaign one, 1,145 characters for campaign two, and 218 characters so far in the 18 episodes of campaign three. Although there's a tiny bit of overlap between the three campaigns, Matt is closing in on 2,000 separate characters since Critical Role began.

If you dont want The Legend of Vox Machina spoilers at all but want more critical role content, i suggest watching Campaign 2 of critical role and before that the Exandria: An Intimate History. The characters are the least tied to vox machina out of the three total campaigns. Its 141 episodes but it is finished! It takes place 24 years after vox machina but isn’t effected by it due to it taking place on a different continent, Wildemount. So every dnd campaign starts there is what is known as a ‘session zero’, where before the aired 1st episode the players test out their characters before locking them in permanently in episode 1. In a session zero certain groups of the characters meet each other, engage in a local encounter that matt had set up, then travel to a destination where all the characters “organically” meet in ep 1. As for making reaction videos for campaign 2, shorten down to your favorite moments or most interesting thoughts or questions regarding the campaign or characters. As the videos are lengthy (3-5 hrs at most).

(The main cast was particularly bummed by not being able to record in one room together.) While most voice actors have professional recording equipment at home, few have the money or the space in their homes to outfit an entire room with sound-dampening foam panels, so they rely on a trick that is known to amateurs and pros alike: a filled closet, with all the hanging and stacked cloth all around you, has excellent sound-absorbing qualities, thus minimising the echo caught on the recording. A _lot_ of the cast spent long, gruelling hours in small, hot, poorly ventilated closets, with the voice director on Zoom, for this season of the show.

There are a few Characters that are SO Matt for me, it pains him to not voice them. Gilmore is the one in Campaign 1 (that we have seen yet)
