That could have been a good use for a bee vac, and maybe a white sheet to put on the ground under the lower hive mess in case they fall off so you can find the queen easier vs in the dirt. definitely an exciting and extra part of your day. :)

I had the same thing this year. Virgin queen went to the bee bar in the sky to get mated. Guess she had too much to drink and when she came home she couldn’t find the entrance and ended up on the bottom. They can out and built comb on the bottom.

Best thing to do is slow down a little and move the new hive really close to the bees are, put the queen in the new box, and the worker bees will follow the queen’s scent into the box, then you can lift stubborn ones by hand.

If you want to easily find the queen split your boxes and just listen. The box with out the queen will go very loud, The box that stays quite is the one with the Queen in. Hope this helps in future, you only have to wait a few minutes for the reaction to start. To stop that happening just have some empty brood boxes around with just starter strips Hide them in the bushes all around your yard in random places and you will never loose a swarm either. . What happens is if bees want to stop in your area and cant find any where, they will build what we call temporary comb until they find some where else. Queens will mate multiple times far more then what is written about them in the outdated books that beed revising. Seen it so many times over the last 23 years or so.

Get a bed sheet under this mess, set a box of combs next to and behind the hive, start grabbing bees to put in the comb box. Don't worry about any wax hanging under the hive bottom board. This will take a bit of effort to sort. Put the comb of wax into another super and move the whole thing 4 or 5 miles away for a bit of time, then return. Use this colony as is or to suppliment other colonies. You may have a young queen.

Just an observation or two. When you were scraping the 4 x 4’s with the bees on there, you should’ve left them alone. They will clean up any spills of honey left behind and bring the bag to the hive and store it for you. There’s no need to try and clean up honey. They will make a piece of water dry if you leave them alone and let them do their work. It may take an hour and a half or two, but it will all be gone when you come back. With the behind is the wax they don’t want which you can scrape and then heat up with a low flame torch and wipe away clean. What other thing. Using a rubber bands to keep the comb in place is good. There’s no need to come back and mess with them again. The next time you see those rubber bands will be in front of the hive at the opening where they drag it out and put it in the garbage can. if you let them do all the work in the finite if you take care of the big stuff. It’s a great relationship when you learn with the can actually do for you.

No matter how messy that was, the bees will clean everything up and settle down in a day or two.

Ps. Do your Rubber Bands Corner to Corner, rather than all around Frame : that way you can add that Comb onto a CrissCross of X Bands. Then apply more CrissCrossed Bands on top of said Comb. You say ?🤔 Go from over one lower Corner (hook Band) then stretch it to the top End Frame Rest (hook Band over it.) Do same with other x Corner to other Top End. Each Frame will have "x4" Rubber Bands 'X' with x2 per Side. So much easier to lay Comb Down, then over Secure it too, than feed soft melting Wax and drippy Honey (through) a tangle of all around Taught (snapping) Bands ! 😂

With the rubberbands, top to bottom (vertical), just make them an X pattern, in other words not exactly vertical. They can cris cross each other too, if you want. The bees should chew thru the bands & remove them, otherwise let them bee 😂

They have a mind of their own. I had a mess like that once. I got a huge hive from it but it was an awful mess. I had a Queen, brood and honey.

I found another 2 cents. You have done a great job on this hive. I see 2 fixes that could be done. 1st the hive is soon to swarm again. Setup a new bottom board on your stand off to side move the deep body with Q cells to that location, make splits then add the supers. Next the hanging swarm. This maybe hard for you but poke a hole threw the screen so the bees can pass. Add a deep body with a frame of open brood with 2 drawn empty frames on either side. These should be be over the hole. That should get you started. Ps the hole can be patched at a later date if the bees don't do it them selves.

I hear piping. Im thinking underneath is a mated queen left with swarm. Didnt go far. I agree new box for the bees underneath. Leave those inside alone.

I had something similar happen last April, this year. I was installing multiple packages, two of them at one apiary and one at another 1/2 mile away. I installed the first package in a 10 frame deep, with the queen in a queen cage. Everything seemed to go well. A few minutes later I installed the second package about 10 feet away, in another 10 frame deep, screened bottom board. I went to the store for about 45 minutes. When I got back, all but about ten worker bees from the first hive were hanging under the screened bottom board of second hive. At this point I had a hive with six pounds of bees and an extra mated queen. My solution was to take the third hive to the other apiary, and dump half of the bees in one hive and half in another, each getting a mated queen in a cage. Both are strong hives. The hive with six pounds of bees had all sorts of problems and eventually absconded. But before it did, it swarmed, and I caught the swarm passively in a swarm trap with swarm commander. So I came out even, lol.

Thank for sharing your new experience… I’m not a 🐝 pro., but a few things I may would done. 1) both hive already have 2Queens feromonds through the screen bottom., make a hive with 2 Queens. They did it naturally why mess it up. That way you keep everything in one place. That would save the “B & 4” that u😢… about the 3 Q-cells.. I’ll make a 10Fr Deep a hotel by splitting it 3 equal frames, let them hatch 🐣 there. May be 3 new hive or if the bottom one don’t have a Qn you have 2 extra in case something goes wrong? On those 4x4 you left a bunch of nurse bees 🐝… brush them off and uses as you like but don’t leave them there.. By the way that may be an old Queens that may swarm on you and came back, she have more bee out that it was in the hive. Thanks for the video keep the good work.

Great bee removal video. Other than running out of room during removal, you really can ask for a better find. Great access, great room to work and very calm bees. Heck they practically had thier own top bar hive already going for you. I've only ever done swarms for fear of having to get into some major cut outs and dealing with fun home owners.

Hi. I would Vacuum them up into a DIY Bee Vac. Easily made using a Nuc, a Hose into the Entrance to suck up the Bees. And another Hose into the Nuc Roof and back to the Vac Unit. . . That way Bees dont get 'bashed to much in that Suction Hose. 👍 Also have x3 Frames of Comb 'nailed' still (drill holes in Frame Ends and Drop a Nail thru to a Smaller Hole on Frame Rest.) That way Bees on Frames eg in Transit don't Roll all about in that Vac Box. Come Temporary Nuc. You grow it on into a x5, x5 Double Deep Nuc over Nuc, then into a Hive Deep x10 with a Super etc. Hope this helps. 😎 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Here in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 I did this recently. Nice and easy Bee Transfer. And a Nuc is easily converted into a Bee Vac when its a Screened Nuc Roof with an added Dummy Roof with Blocker Board in that Screened area. That way you have the Hose in without stuffing up your regular Nuc Roof. Best of both world's ! 🙃 Tip Any Comb left in situ, get a sharp Knife and cut that Comb off carefully. You can then store it in a lidded Tote. On arrival to Home, Bee Yard etc, you can add this Comb with Rubber Bands around Bee Frames back to the Bees to fully draw it out (and repair those gappy areas of smaller comb parts.) That way you will aid the Queen to lay Brood and the Bees to store incoming Pollen and Nectar. 😉

I don’t know how long you have been working with bees, but if you had put that box with the queen in it next to all those external bees, they would eventually just walk into that hive because they could smell her from that short distance and you had all the bees in the box by morning

I would have caged her for 3 days incase she absconds. And a frame of brood from another hive helps.

Answer to your question. YES, a newly mating queen will make multiple flights. Including laying up to 50 eggs and going out to mate again. I have seen it a number of times in mating nucs which I track diligently. Once there is a palm sized patch of eggs, then no she does not go out anymore … until she is spurred to swarm.

sometimes you just need to take a breath and the time to assess a situation. The bees weren't going anywhere. Good job but could have gone a whole lot better. No reason you couldn't have framed up the brood comb. Also put the honey comb on the blocks next to the new hive so they could have it close by to retrieve. Nice set up!! Seems you were not very excited about a ready made hive with a mated queen, though. I'm gonna watch you because I think you are going to make great strides in the next year or two, but, dude, only if you remain calm.

To my knowledge A mated Queen Could only leave again if the hive had rejected her, it was feeding her otherwise should be too heavy to fly

The easiest way to separate the lower brood box with a queen separator.. then put 2 or 3 honey boxes, then put another queen separator.. then a clean box for the underside bees in the top brood box... if there is no queen in the bottom brood box you will know in 5 or five days.. If it turns out that you have 2 queens you now have a double queen box .. If you have either 1 or 2 queens you still need to pluck the queen cells .. either rehive them or destroy them to avoid swarming..

A happy life is learning how to positively reframe your perspective. This "work" doesn't have to be a chore let alone a tragedy. Look at it as an adventure! It's a chance to be with your bees and learn, and do what you love. Peace.

well to help you out.. before you put comb in frames you put rubber bands on frames first. and you make sure comb is installed right way not just put it on frames. you need to know what is up and what is down. Also after you found queen a few frames should be missing in box so you can take and shake bees into box either from comb or screen board even handfuls. set queen inside on frame and oh yea they will go in like water down a drain. and it is imperative you zip your PPE shut before getting into bees.

Dude, I would set the new hive with the queen over on the block where the bees underneath the fram and she the queen would call the rest of the bees into the new hive!

Everything I have seen about putting comb in frames, they go in the same way up as it was when you cut it out. You fave some sideways, some upside down, some upright!

Should put the hive on the ground behind her that way you would have got all your Bees change board bees coming back well go to the smell on it. She might go back to it .

Hi, just a beginner but did notice pairs of eggs in cells at 13:10 into the video. From what I've read, this could most likely be a laying worker which might explain the lack of a queen in the brood box. Still, qreat video, picked up on your unzipped hood 5mins before you mentioned it so was very engaging.

Not likely that a queen will return to the air to get remated after she is laying. Anything is possible, I suppose but never have I heard of such. A very weird situation you are in, my friend. Why not make this hive a double queen colony. If you have a decent flow you will see something awesome with honey storage.

Queens do make multiple flights, hang your comb the exact way it came off the bottom board cells have a slight angle to them, Leave the cells if you can't find the queen, she was probably the one on the bottom board. Best of luck 👍

37:26 just an idea for next time place a baking dish underneath and then smoke the swarm so they drop into the dish being able to move the bees 1 time

I did have this happen to me. Not good When you inspected the first hive I noticed 3 eggs in a cell. This video was very frustrating to watch. Your hives are beautiful.

I am only a beginner so I am just trying to figure things out. Is it possible that as you have an entrance reducer on the hive that the lack of ventilation is causing the hive to do that?

Well it looks like you are going to get to Lay down on the job on this one . A queen when she get back from her mating flight it usually takes a while before she starts to lay eggs . You need look in that colony to see if you have any queen cells or any torn down queen cells. It sounds like she swarmed she was the primary swarm an yes if those other cell hatch out you you could have more swarms to go out .

I love the video. I’m semi interested in bee keeping. My grandson in highly allergic to almost everything. I thinking if I give him honey from a hive on our property, it will help him. There is more to keeping bees than I realized.

I have the same issue right now. But my situation is built on the bottom of a solid board. I've done building extractions before, but never had this happen. The bees left over will beg their way in the hive on top On top of that I have a colony in my bee shed. Instead of making it easy on me and go in empty hive boxes, this swarm decided to build their comb on the inside of the door. The colony under the outside hive will go into a Langstroth. The colony in the shed is going into a Layen's hive. Our nectar flows are over now, and it's not going to be easy to get the outside job done. As for marking your queen. Why don't you just hold her and mark her. It's easier and faster

Just a quick question. When you are putting the comb into the frame, the part that was attached to the screen that would be considered the top?. That part should be at the top of the frame? My understanding is that the cells on the comb are angled slightly and that if they are the wrong way round the bees will not use those comb?

Newbee here. When you placed the inner cover on the Super you placed a small object in the corner of it and then put your top cover on. What was the small object?

Did you paint the pictures on your hive boxes or are they decals you glued on?

Perhaps a case for not using sbb? I'm guessing the new queen could smell her home hive through the screen and became confused on her return flight. I'm gradually replacing all of my sbb with solids as are most beeks I know. Disadvantages far outweigh advantages. I've become a believer in the condensing hive theory.

Those were not queen cups but actually capped queen cells.

Why do you guys insist on putting this QE flush to the edges of the deep box. Pull it back about an inch or place it 90 degrees to leave a gap on both the front and back. This allows drones a way to move around in the hive without clogging the QE gaps, restricting the bees and honey being stored above. The queen will seldom discover that the excluder is offset. Trust me, I did this for many years with no problem

First question, do you have a hole in your screen to bottom board? That would be the most logical

She missed the landing and the bees passed eggs through the screen. I had that happen to me last year,all I did was leave the queen cells do another split and add/shake extra bees and move brood frames to equalize both colonies. It all worked out.

I had one with a cut wing and she moved under the box they made a swarm sale and I didn't see it

I’m thinking the bees 🐝 swarmed because you’re using a queen excluder. Maybe you should try one Hive without a queen excluder in it and see what happens.

You should of put a tarp underneath the Bee's before removing them, instead now you have to try and get them off the ground

You could have a laying worker... You need to check your frames to see if there is only drone brood. If this is the case its a laying worker.

If you keep the entrance reduced for the winter in a spring/summer all the bees are going to move out. Just like that. My friend is no other case than enlarging the entrance. Please do this exercise: cover your nose and mouth. Can you breathe? I don’t think so.

Seems to me you take the hive off the bottom and put the bottom on top of an empty box on top of the box that you are going to use and then knock them off the bottom replace with a top and if there is cone you work the cone as it fits the day

Your old queen is under the bottom board with a swarm of bees; she is waiting for one of those queen cells you saw to hatch, the virgin will take off to be mated , then the old queen under the bottom board will take off with her swarm.

You could (and in my opinion should) have framed that comb attached to the original location, you already had an empty frame and rubber bands,

No Queen but there is eggs is because you have a worker bee laying eggs .

Maybe it was handier if you already knew that you were going to put comb on a frame ..... put the rubberbands on firts before the comb that's way easier.

The queen usually goes on more than 1 mating flight.

Learning what I have, why didn't you shake them in a box while searching then grab the comb without bees on it and see if bees would then navigate to box if queen is in there.
