In 1979, Ridley Scott made aliens more terrifying than ever in ALIEN! In this video, I try to untangle what makes this movie special and what meaning can be found in it.
Many say the movie is about “fear of the unknown” but what does it actually say about that fear? Listen to hear my thoughts then share yours in the comments!

So many things came together perfectly for this film: Dan O'Bannon’s idea, Ron Cobb’s ship designs, HR Ginger’s Alien designs, a cast of OLDER NOT SO GOOD LOOKING character actors with depth (imagine casting it now?), and Riddles to direct it all with his striking visual look. Yes Alien, in all its forms and shapes is really about the unknown horrors from the depths of space. A big mistake is trying to explain and show more, instead you should show less and scare people with the idea of what horrific things are out there in the great black.

I first saw Alien in 1979 on it's cinematic release (yes, I'm old). There had been plenty of hype but nothing solid, it held all its secrets and, with no internet at the time, until you went and saw it they would remain secret. Now I knew of H.R. Giger and was greatly looking forward to seeing his visions on screen but the first sight of the derelict ship and then its monstrous pilot made me sit up and realise that the hype was true. We were in for something special. After that events seemed to happen so fast and so violently - never mind disgustingly - that everything became a blur. A palpable sigh of relief went through the audience when the xenomorph was finally incinerated. Over the years the design of the spaceship Nostromo, its crew and their individual stories has enraptured me to the point where I have purchased everything I can that is in print about the original ship and sometimes in the sequels. I'll never get the chance to talk to Dan O'Bannon, Alien creator, as he has sadly passed but he seemed like a man with huge talent, a jaded view of producers and a joie de vivre that would mean good conversation. I sit here at my keyboard, dressed like Samuel Brett (a personal choice for the past year) absorbing any interesting analyses through KZfaq that come up and playing my internet spaceship game (EVE-Online if you must know) and hoping that, before I shuffle off this mortal coil, I can produce a video as interesting as yours. Thanks for another good video on my favourite movie.

As a younger person I can't wait to tell my kids these type things if I have any because although I wasn't born until 2001 that movie was honestly one of my favorites I did also love the alien vs predator but that since it was legit a wild animal type create that came from space vs a hunter alien but I think I was like 8? Don't remember but yeah I've watched every installment of the whatever verse they call it for fun but what I also wanted to say was we can still enjoy similar things if we extended an olive branch to the younger generation now I don't know which franchise to rewatch now I finished transformers recently

Saw this in the theater when it came out in 1979. It was genuinely terrifying. It was so different from anything in that genre (space travel, aliens). Until then, there was a sense of accomplishment and an ability to overcome the challenges of space and that contact with aliens could be "something wonderful". Alien questioned that narrative. In Alien it was never a foregone conclusion that Ripley would make it - and she almost didn't. The message I got was we need to be more than cautious, we need to be humble and we need to question where we are sticking our faces.

When our first ancestors first encountered wolves and lions, they certainly did know their speed and strength. Humans didn't stumble unprepared into existence, carnivores have been a menace to primates well before anyone came down from a tree. What we fear is what we cannot see, because the unseen hunter is beyond our ability to control.

I'll never forget the first time I saw Alien. I saw it in a theater. There was a man setting three seats down from me, just sitting there watching the movie with popcorn and a drink in his hand and when that chestburster scene came he freaked out so bad the popcorn and the drink went up in the air, and landed on the people in back of him. I just kept on staring straight ahead as in: WoW! WoW! WoW!

A near perfect movie and my 2nd favorite of all-time. The entire film holds up nearly 45 years later but for one thing, and it's not really that big of a deal but it's something that didn't age well. The visual effects for the explosion of the Nostromo and refinery looked overly artificial even back when I first saw it in the early 90s. If ever there were a Lucasesque 'Special Edition' of Alien, I'd think that would be the first and maybe only shot to get remade. That and Ash's smiling head before it switches over to Ian Holm's actual face.

2001 A Space Odyssey in large part was true metaphysical film project hidden in the disguise of science fiction. I'm almost certain Kubrick never meant there to be any aliens, he played time to not reveal things. He managed to get funding because space race was heating and because of Arthur C. Clarke. Thus he had to fake the making of science fiction film. He for the most part removed Arthur C. Clarke's visions and made the film something that most still don't really grasp. Though the point still stands, you cannot imagine the unimaginable, and here that unimaginable is actually meant to be just that. We cannot imagine God, or any entity so high above us that it's god to us. The black monolith, philosopher's stone, cubed brick aka Kubrick (or WTC 7), is something that can transform.

I love how Ash calls the Xenomorph a survivor unclouded by conscience, remorse and delusions of morality, as if that makes it better than us. But by the end, Ripley is a survivor who embraces all those traits and perseveres.

Covenant was tedious because it also relied upon the crew being afraid of the unknown, even though the audience was perfectly aware of what the aliens were and were capable of. The novels explored far wider and more interesting territory. Humans were aware of xenomporphs and what could do, but their greed and stupidity still resulted in them being torn apart. Some of those novels would make much better movies that the drivel we've got so far.

not sure who's creations were the most dangerous, Weyland's, or Tyrell's. Weyland considered Tyrell's to be 'Abominations'. though both were unpredictable and used against humans at times. so like you said about the powers that be, too easy for them to just have an android do their dirty work. Blade Runner on the other hand saw replicants become self-aware and a threat to humans in that way, for their own survival. either way, A.I. is a dangerous convenience! and we're heading there ourselves it looks like

It's about a slightly upgraded "Bender Bending Rodriguez" with a God Complex who sees the Human race as a mistake that must be winnowed out with a custom made "Wolf." No need to find the Xenomorph home planet with an animal keeping "the highly evolved insect species" in check.

Always thought another meaning was a couple gets introduced, then a marriage, the removal of virginity and innocence, strange customs, the in-laws visit, a child is born that ultimately mooches off the parents, he will not go to school nor get a job, mom and Dad divorce, Mom and Son live together , she supports the house hold while he stays home all day smokes pot and plays CoD, son then becomes addicted to stronger drugs, mom can't help but view her child as alien, he becomes violent hurts her and her friends, she tries to leave but he traps her he also tries to go long with her, but she's had it, she ultimately has to kick him out of the house and move on with her life. She tries to move on anyway... Aliens number 2 is the son returns with friends and his girlfriend he calls his new Mother. Two Mommy's Fight. 3 is about a reunion and intervention at a prison, Mom has a one nightstand with her doctor, son get upset, explodes with anger and has an aneurysm and dies finally, Mom has another baby, congratulations it's a girl, mom holds on to her daughter as they walk off into the sunset together..... The End. 4 Resurrection, and the two Prometheus movies were all bad dreams the Mother had. I can not be the only one who saw these movies, this is in there...come on, Cain's body wrapped in white hello, he was the representation of a Bride going down an aisle look at it upsidedown as it shoots out. If you know all the movies really well, and read those, that totally fits in there. Lol, seriously Ive always seen those in the films❤ You're welcome. And Thank You!😂

There's been alien killing humans before and since, But this movie stands out as the more realistic. The new human equation is greed or selfishness. But knowing politics in Hollywood, this might be considered the first woke movie. The theme of a woman hero, corporate greed, incompetent police officers and military leaders are now everywhere in movies. I think the technology to make this movie, was there at the right time. the story was better with great acting talent who had years of experience helped a lot. I don't think they can out do this movie in the future and the more they try to add on the story history before or after will flop, so why try!
@pillmuncher67

There's also the theme of sexualized violence versus the preservation of innocence. Ash, the artificial man with sperm for blood, tries to orally rape Ripley with a rolled up porn magazine. The facehugger orally rapes Kane and impregnates him. The Alien is a penis/wet vagina with teeth. In the end, before she encounters the alien for the last time, Ripley undresses to her underwear. Some have criticized that scene, saying it gratuitously sexualizes Ripley, but I see it as the opposite. Her underwear is clearly too small, like that of a child that keeps outgrowing their cloths. After she finds out that the alien is on board the escape pod, she puts on a space suit and very quietly sings a "You Are My Lucky Star" to try to calm herself down. Ripley's actions through the movie can be interpreted as a fight to keep her innocence. Oh, and Ripley has no first name. Only in the next movie we learn that it's Ellen.
