What are Autoimmune Diseases? Autoimmune Diseases are caused when the immune system attacks its own cells. This video is about autoimmunity, how autoimmune diseases develop, and the symptoms they cause. Find out how autoimmune antibodies, B-cells and T-cells get made and how they get activated. Autoimmune cells are activated via molecular mimicry, bystander activation and epitope spreading. Persistent infections can increase the stimulation of the immune system over a person's lifetime and increase the chances of activating autoimmune cells.
Autoimmune Diseases can affect one organ, as in Type I Diabetes or many organs, as in Lupus. More than 100 autoimmune disorders affect 5-10% of people worldwide.

If the definition of immune is to be "totally or partially resistant to a particular infectious disease or pathogen" Auto-immune disease seems like a misleading name, why not call it an immune system disorder or ISD?

I have multiple autoimmune disorders. Mine started after I had severe influenza and I got another one after I caught Parvo virus B19. My son’s autoimmune was triggered by severe influenza. My brotherinlaw developed type 1 diabetes after he had measles. In my family the trigger seems to be viruses, with a genetic predisposition.

Helpful video! I have a question: I know a number of people who put their autoimmune conditions into remission (& were able to stop medications) with a whole-food plant-based diet. One such person is my cousin. She had severe lupus, but she switched to this way of eating and after 6 months, had negative blood work and no symptoms. She’s been in remission for 5 years. She helped a few of her friends and family members too who are also now in remission. Can you please explain how such a diet could achieve this? Like, how/why does the diet stop the autoreactive T or B cells from attacking the body? I imagine it has something to do with bringing inflammation levels down but I don’t understand how that stops the process.

Thanks for your comment. 🤓 early data suggests that plant-based diets can improve lupus symptoms (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8793314/). However, there is little data on complete diet change and no placebo-controlled double bind studies. Also, as Lupus tends to flare up and then go into remission, it's hard to tell if the change in diet was the cause or if they were going to go into remission anyway for a single case. More research needs to be done on how diet plays a role.

AMAZING! Can I ask: how long in history have we as a collective been studying and researching about auto-immune diseases?
@ClevaLab

Thanks for your question. 🤓 I had to google this one! There's a review article on this here: doi.org/10.1002/rai2.12049. A better review is here: doi.org/10.1016/j.autrev.2009.10.007, but is behind a paywall. Paul Ehrlich put forward the idea of autoimmunity and that the body could attack itself in the early 1900s, and initial scientific studies indicated this was correct. But, only a few scientists worked on this theory until the late 1940s. Up to the 1940s, the research focused on the immune system fighting foreign pathogens and allergic reactions. In the late 1940s, hemolytic anemia and lupus were the first autoimmune diseases identified. They were shown to be caused by autoantibodies. It was in the 1960s that the scientific community widely accepted autoimmunity.

Excellent presentation but diet was considered a culprit for the development of AD at the start but not at the end, anyhow my AD mostly features arthritis, tinnitus and neuropathy which is cured by avoiding wheat, dairy and lectins/nightshades. I often suspect I’m not exceptional because over the years I’ve got to know many people with serious AD classifications and all have always consumed a diet consisting of the best known allergens.

Thanks for your comment. 🤓 Yes, it's hard to cover everything and still be clear and keep it relatively simple! But, interestingly, there has been a clinical trial that found eliminating meat, lactose (all dairy) and gluten, along with continued drug treatment, reduced pain and inflammation (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34684536/). So, you are not alone. It's great you could work this out on your own.

@@ClevaLab , I think it's a different trigger for each individual, but food allergies are definitely involved. For me it's corn, but I know someone else who is triggered by bananas and avocado. I have had a reaction to every grain except rice, but it is worse during a flare.

How do you get the HLA-B27 positive gene out of the blood????
@ClevaLab
@ClevaLab 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for your question. 🤓 The DNA is purified using a DNA extraction kit. The DNA is in the white blood cells in your blood. The gene is then PCR amplified and visualised on a gel or by a qPCR machine.
