You are not a person, you are a planet, made of roughly 40 trillion cells. There is so much of you, that if your cells were human-sized, you would be as big as 20 Mount Everests. For your creepy-crawly inhabitants, this makes your body an ecosystem, rich in resources and warmth and space. A perfect place to move into and have a family. While some of these guests are welcome, most are not. Your immune system is the guardian of this planet, the force tasked with protecting yourself against the constant danger of invasion.

Hey everybody! Today finally marks the release of “Immune - A Journey Into the Mysterious System that Keeps You Alive”. The book I've sorta started writing a decade ago! You can get it here: kgs.link/ImmuneBook - It’s available in English and German and at online retailers it should be available in pretty much all countries too. First we had to push the release back because of cargo trouble and then because so many of you pre-ordered that we didn’t have enough copies for the original launch day! Thank you so, so much for that! Tonight I'm doing an AMA on Reddit where you can ask me about Kurzgesagt, science communication and of course the book! Join here: kgs.link/KGS_AMA In any case - Kurzgesagt is a passion project and it's just so heartwarming how wholesome and supportive our community and viewers are. I'm incredibly grateful to have this job and to be able to make content for all of you, video or printed. - Philipp

I have an autoimmune disease that doesnt act like one, its called Raynauds, basically the process your body does when youre cold is overreactive to a fault in my body and im unfortunate enough to have a fairly severe case of it, its not the same because in stead of killing my healthy cells by body is in a constant state of overreacting (from my understanding at least) id love to see a video on autoimmune diseases and how people treat them at all
@siubhanward7631
@siubhanward7631 Жыл бұрын
It depends what type you have, primary reynauds which is a condition on its own (not considered autoimmune), but also know people with secondary reynauds (caused by an already pre existing autoimmune disease, I’m personally type 1 diabetic). When you’re cold your body constricts your blood vessels as a normal response, but with reynauds the constriction is more severe and can last much longer is how I can best describe it. So painful sometimes 😅
@yuuriahl
@yuuriahl Жыл бұрын
@@siubhanward7631 That is fair, I have Primary which mildly runs in my family on my dad's side, but i have a very severe case where its not just a bit painful, i actively cannot keep my nails alive and have been highly prone to continuous infection as a result of my nerves in my feet not working enough to detect them, its actually to the point that I was convinced I had secondary because of just how bad it is but theres no other condition for it to be considered secondary

I also think that people that has allergies also have a kind of autoimmune disease. I cant recall it fully, but basically allergies are kind of disease where your immune system over reacts at something normally harmless. Like towards pollen. Cells at Work does a good job to explain it, and why people with allergies reacting the way they do

Just wanted to say that I am am big fan of biology, and have been wanting to make a game where you play as the immune system, defending certain parts of the body against disease. It will have many mechanics, such as having to find a difference between infected cells and regular ones to arm your killer cells, without killing your own cells or letting too many infected ones get by.

One really underrated thing about Kurzgesagt is how well they organize their sources. They provide you with a source for every statement found in a video and provides the quote within that source that led to the statement. This is extremely rare if not unique even among educational youtubers, and we should be using those as an example on how to source things.

I got the book today ❤ i love it! The pictures are so captivating, smells good and how did you know i prefer hardcovers! Ive graduated uni as a biomed with a strong passion for the immune system and cancer studying it ever since 2014 but decided to get this to show my support for all the great work you have done and educating so many millions of people and this is such a refreshing way to look at the immune system! I remember getting the usual textbooks and struggling struggling understand how it worked in some parts as there were no colored or any pictures to illustrate it in a way i understood it and i will say on your videos i can get lost with the similes of a metaphor and what youre trying to explain i will be honest, however I am happy you also explain alongside it the simile of the metaphor to what is actually called and how it functions. Please do write more, i would love to see one in hemato-oncoly & paraneoplastic syndromes or genetics and I'd happy buy and add it to my collection in a heartbeat! Needless to say i wish i had this book when i was starting or these videos available to me back then Much love, as always Philipp and keep up the great work! Mila👒

It’s not only receptors, bacterial cell membranes are different from human cell membranes; they contain polysaccharides as an outer shell, as well as lipopolysaccharides, lipoproteins, peptidoglycan. Same process for viruses. For good bacteria, there are dendritic cells that take protein samples from good bacteria, travel to lymphatic nodes with the broken-down protein, and show those proteins around for the immune system to see and understand that those microbiota are friendly.
@infiresmaaan4360
@infiresmaaan4360 Жыл бұрын
I think it is extremely unlikely for an infectious cell to have the exact same set of proteins as a human cell. And even if it did match an individual's membrane proteins, it would still differ from another individual's, like the reason why we take immunosuppressants after organ transplant. Idk that's what i think

No honesty here. Gangs of six-year-old orphans can perfectly exist without adults. You do realize that the whole story about 18 years is a social construct right? You are "useful" as soon as you learn to walk and realize yourself as a separate person. And why should you be useful anyway and for what? For work, for sex? And adults do not become "useful", they stop listening to you and constantly argue with you. In fact, everything you said is nonsense.

A macrophage is the common soldier. A neutrophil is a soldier who has gone crazy. A dendritic cell is an intelligence officer. Your complement system is the armed and unarmed civilians who lived at what is now a battlefield. A T-Cell is a tootsie roll you ate that restocked you on energy. A B-Cell is the shedded blood that reacts with the dirt on the field, making thick mud. And last but not least, antibodies are the thick mud on the battlefield, slowing down the enemy.

I am here lying on my bed as I watch this video. I got sick with bacterial Pneumonia. I was feeling quite down because i lost the chance to do many activities for the upcoming week. But then thats why am here, I remember watching kurzgesagt's video about immunity 7 years ago when i was 14, and nonetheless to say, it is just as heartwarming to know there is a bunch of cells fighting for me as when i was sick when i was 14.
