This is great and all, but how do these tips translate for people with depression? How do I show that I have "desire", express my "vision", and that I will, "change the world," is my self efficacy is practically non-existent? I have the grades, test scores and extracurriculars, yet no drive. I feel like I would, if not for my depression. They are things I like, activities and subjects that I love, I suppose I am incessantly curious but, my depression is making all of these assets die off. I would act on, and expand my "passions" more if I didn't hold myself back so much. You could tell me to just stop doing that, but it's not that simple. I have become apathetic; complacent, and have been this way for much of my highschool career. It's too late to make a turn-around. Do I lie about how I feel about myself and the world on my essay? I can imagine no college would admit someone they perceive to be emotionally weak due to their likelihood of dropping out, but I want to stay genuine in my essay. So do I omit the fact that I am so depressed? I feel like this mental illness only benefits you in the college process *if* you have already overcome it. It's a bit too late for that now. I feel like everyone expects you to be optimistic and to believe in yourself in order to get into a competitive college, but that seems nearly infeasible for me. I probably could be able to do all that I want to, if not for my feelings holding me back and that sucks so much. No one ever talks about applying for colleges when depressed, I would really appreciate your advice. Edit: I have read and heard college admissions officers say that they value insight into how an applicant thinks. This is the last thing I would want someone to know, especially a college admissions officer. Given my apathetic; pessimistic mentality, do you think that college just isn't the best option for me right now? I really want to go to college, but I'm the antithesis of who colleges look for apparently.
@carolambriz6398
@carolambriz6398 6 жыл бұрын
Nem I Hi I think I can help as a depressed person who recently applied to top schools and got accepted to some. I would advice to talk about your depression because, in my case, it's a huge part of who I am and how I see the world. Of course you can approach this in many different ways. In my case I wrote about a poetry performance that I gave and how I didn't win it. I mentioned how despite this loss, I handled it and realized that it didn't necessarily make me worthless. Because for the most part my depression makes me feel worthless. I think it's not wrong to feel pessimistic about the world, but a way you could make it sound appealing to a college, is how you recognize it and perhaps try to counteract it. Again it's very much an individual case on how to talk about your depression, but I would recommend to talk about it.

Hey! I think that I have the ambition, vision, work ethic and extracurriculars to be accepted by an ivy league. (I know this sounds pretty egosentric and what not, but please stay with me here☺) You probably don't know much about international applications, etc. But I really need an answer on this... My 11th grade average is 87.86%. In South Africa, an A means 80% -100%. I.e. My unweighted GPA is a 4.0. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to calculate my weighted GPA, because we don't work with GPAs and we don't have AP/Honors/Regular classes. Our classes are all the same throughout my porvince (Western Cape). Would a South African's 87.86% be enough to get accepted? (Only judging by grade)
@straightchlorine2434
@straightchlorine2434 5 жыл бұрын
Thomas Fowler 87.86% seems abit low for the Ivy League as they have alot of perfect scorers applying there. But remember that your admission depends on your ecas and essay (and interview in some cases) so good luck!

Can you please tell me if i have the same chance to get in to college as a US resident who attends school there if I am studying abroad even though I am a US citizen?
@ishu4ever308
@ishu4ever308 6 жыл бұрын
Nada Hassan I think you should have the same chance. The only thing is, you might be considered an out-of-state student for all colleges because you don't live in a particular state. For example, UC colleges seem to give more preference towards Californian students and second preference will be given to out-of-state students. This matters more in a public school rather than private.

Hey so I just wanted to let you know from my experience colleges love diversity and the simple fact you are studying abroad actually gives you a better chance to get into most colleges if you really have the grades and you show your worth you definitely can get into that type of college regardless of your current living situation.

I'm in 10th grade, and last year I told myself that I wasn't going to do sports so I could focus on my grade. I love volleyball and I want to get more active but I would be missing so much school for a few months/weeks and I just don't know what to do. My grades are incredibly important to me and I don't want to have them affected, because of volleyball. I want to play but at the same time I don't. This year is definitely going to be a little trickier because I might be taking two math courses, an I just want to be at the top of my game. Please, anybody, give me some advice on this.

@ishu4ever308
@ishu4ever308 6 жыл бұрын
Any pre-medical or pre-dentistry student should have a high gpa and sat score. But it all depends on your major. For example, if you're planning to major in biological sciences, then make sure your grades in sciences are good and have a high gpa, because science majors can be a little competitive to get into depending on the college you plan to apply to. But you could also major in something like English if that's what you want in college. Depending on your major, you can see what type of grades would be required from you. Most science and engineering majors would usually have higher grades. In regards to whether of not to take volleyball, that depends on you. If you think it will drastically impact your gpa, then don't take it. If you think it won't affect it that much, then take it. Do you think volleyball is something you can excel in and it can positively impact your college application? If student council is the only extracurricular activity you are in, then you should probably get more extracurriculars. Colleges want to usually want to see 3-4 or 4-5 extracurriculars where you have put in a lot of time and have a leadership position. I don't know if you have any other extracurriculars but if you don't, you should get some this year.

Do colleges look at unweighted or weighted grades??
@ericbing8636
@ericbing8636 4 жыл бұрын
Most of the time they look at the rigor of your course load and GPA in the context of your school. As long as you took advantage of the classes presented to you and did well you should be fine. So the weighted or unweighted element doesn't really matter as much.

Holistic approach? Really? A teenager of 18 yrs of age is really a well rounded person? Can they have both excellent grades and also a 'unique' positive spirit? The more the octaves of her voice are rising, the more I feel it's all about social engineering and not the unique personality of the student. The more they claim a holistic approach, the more I believe they're looking for subservient students who study relentlessly and follow the leaders without blinking (Chinese model). I bet all applicants tell standardized stories produced by second rate writers in which they discover the 'humanity' of their neighbors, help a transgender make the transition or some other sort of crap that passes today as 'an unique positive spirit'.
