Unlike traditional apps, mini programs aren't downloaded from something like Apple's App Store or an Android equivalent.
Instead, they're accessed on-demand from a 'native' app, for example, WeChat, which pioneered the feature. Now, other tech companies have followed by launching their own mini program ecosystems on their flagship apps.
Users can use them to perform a variety of tasks that include but aren't limited to shopping, food ordering, ride hailing, and ticket purchasing.
They're lightweight in nature and take up minimal space on users' smartphones. The barrier for entry for developers is also much lower, which presents new opportunities for businesses.
So can mini programs replace traditional app stores?
