Night terrors, also called sleep terrors, are a type of sleep disorder that disrupts sleep and causes intense fear similar to that caused by nightmares. Unlike nightmares, night terror episodes may involve flailing, screaming, feelings of extreme panic, or sleepwalking.
#NightTerrors are considered a parasomnia, a classification of sleep disorders characterized by unusual behavior, vocalization, or movement during sleep. Night terrors are more common in children, but adults may suffer from them, as well. Though episodes normally last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes, they have been known to last thirty minutes or even longer.

What Are Night Terrors?
Night terrors are a sleep disorder that typically occurs during the transition between the deepest stage of #sleep, known as N3, and REM sleep, the fourth and final stage of sleep when vivid dreaming occurs. The disorder results from a partial arousal from sleep, when the sufferer is not fully asleep but not conscious. Night terrors are characterized by a state of heightened fear, but do not typically involve dreams or #nightmares.

I legitimately remember having night terrors when I was around 6 (I'm 18 now and was talking to my dad about how we remember when I had them when I was little), and I remember feeling the most intense primal dread I could imagine. I know people say you shouldn't be able to remember it, but I really can. I can't remember specific situations that vividly, but I know the feeling I got and it's really hard to explain. It felt like I was in extreme fear, rage, and crying at the same time (like I was in danger and I had to fight for my own survival and nobody could help me). I remember feeling some of the most intense emotions I've ever felt in my entire life and not knowing why it was even happening to me in the first place. My dad said it was really scary for him too, because he'd wake up to me crying outside of his bedroom door at like 2 in the morning and he wouldn't know what was going on. It was a really long time ago, but the feelings were obviously profound enough for me to still know what it was like now, and I'm just glad I haven't had problems with them in over a decade.

The secret is to guide them very gently and lovingly, back to sleep. Keep ur voice soft and calm and reassure them that everything is ok and gently stroke their hair or cheek, as you lie beside them, continuously speaking in a soothing tone, lulling them back to sleep. They will focus on your calm voice, and drift off into a calm sleep. If they are playing out a dream that they are stuck in, then change the direction of the dream towards one of love, happiness and calm.

This is absolutely the trick... especially in small children. I had night terrors all the way to my early 30s. Now, I'm 43yo and have a 4yo son that has them. Even as someone who has had countless night terrors, I believe that seeing your child experience them is much scarier. It triggers some deep emotions in me that my wife just can't identify with, so I'm usually the one that deals with calming him when he has them. Your advice is spot on when trying to calm your child! While I can understand the advice of not touching the dreamer for adults, in my opinion, this is terrible advice for children experiencing night terrors.

Not the trick the appropriate thing in my opinion is to accommodate the ocd compulsion, and actually wake them up to do the ocd and then once they get happy again then they can fall back to sleep.

I learned so much and am thankful that none of my children ever had night terrors because they sound horrible. Nightmares are scary enough but becoming aggressive or leaving the home and never remembering that it happened due to night terrors is just plain frightful. Im surprised more children dont get hurt during a night terror.

My 8 year old brothers has night terrors EVERY NIGHT always around 10 or 11 whenever I’m getting ready for bed. I go in his room and he’s screaming, sitting in his bad, trying to climb down his ladder, and grabbing the air. Last night he kept asking my mom if he can “use it” or “give it to me” and my mom would say sure and pretend to give him something and then he’d feel better and she would rock him to sleep again

I used to suffer from night terrors. I remember a few of my experiences but I am told by my parents that it occurred much more often than I remember. The experience is more than a feeling, although the feeling is intense and significant, I experienced hallucinations reacting with my surroundings and all of my senses. It's a distict feeling I've never had since and I hope I never feel it again. Terrifying. Luckily I grew out of them around the age of 13. Trying now to make sense of what I went through.

I heard of this before when we were researching sleep issues with my oldest nephew. The sleep debt thing seems to be common among making these existing issues worse, my teenage nephew was a sleepwalker as a child, but it only flares up now when he's extremely exhausted or under a significant amount of stress. I'm just glad this wasn't one of his issues.

Night terrors usually aren't remembered but the key word is _usually_ in this case. I don't remember most of mine I had from ages 3-6, but I do remember some. While there isn't a dream in the traditional sense of a movie in your brain, there is a "dream" that lasts a few seconds that consists of knowing something, realizing something, or a single image or maybe an image with a tiny bit of an "action" sequence. Like for example, a night terror "dream" might be that the universe collapsed onto a line. An overwhelming abstract kind of pure terror. And since you're in deep sleep, you never actually wake up, your eyes open but your brain produces dream images of terrifying, abstract things and you just feel overwhelming primal fear. Another "dream" is realizing that you're just a one-dimensional line that stretches infinitely in both directions and nothing else exists except for you. Or another one involved some giant sphere/planet thing that looked like a giant Epcot sphere making perfect geometric shapes, but everything was so pitch-black.

I remember my night terrors like I was awake the hole time but I'd be screaming fully believing I was chocking to death on a big rubber spiky ball I remember thinking to myself there's noway I'm going to get such a large ball from out of my throat and I new I was going to die. I'd strip naked and run around the house screaming death crying my eyes out begging for someone to save my life, a couple of times the bath still had water in it and I'd strip naked and roll around in the bath like always "screaming death, begging for help" I could she everything in the house I could see my family terrified I was fully aware of every little detail I was awake and concious but feeling everything in my night terror so regardless of how aware I was I was just as lost in the terror and spent the hole time dying till one of my family members could lure me back to my bed and rub my head or hair till I fell back to sleep. My terrors stopped when I was 13 and started when I was 7, I'm 29 now and I remember them like It was yesterday, it was the same dream everytime I never beat it and I never got the ball out of my throat they just stopped happening. I remember when I was 17 and I was falling asleep on the couch and woke up to the taste of the spiky ball in my throat i hadnt had the night terror in 4 years by that point but will never in my life forget that taste once id woken i sat up and new extact what that taste was it raddled me for an hour or so after that its like my brain sensed it and had already propared itself for the nightterror but i was just dozing of so i woke to quick for the dream to start but my brain was already in nightterror protection mode. I wish more people would talk about those of use that remember our terrors like there a movie we've seen on repeat. We don't all forgot asoon as we wake up. I have a baby now and I'm terrified ill pass my terrors on to him. I'll wake up one night to the deathly screams of my little boy fighting for his life with nothing I can do to help but watch until I can try lead him to bed in his night terrors own time. I never survived any of my night mares or night terrors and no1 even those with me in my dream were strong enough to save me. All my nightmares where the same reoccurring dreams and everytime the monster dragged me out the window, eventually I learnt what was coming from inside my dream. I remembe one night i was waiting ready for the monster in my dream to open the window and crawl in to rip me out, I was staring at the window when i saw it crawl threw the window with its sharp teeth and claws and long arms and legs crawling like the exorcist I jumped up and ran down the hallway screaming for my family the all got up and ran down the hallway but by that time the monster was in the house and down the hallway holding me by my legs while my family held on to my hands they played tug of war with my body till I slipped from there hands and the monster ripped me down the hallway and out the window right infront of them, I never beat the monster it got me everytime it just went away one day. And another reoccurring dream was a trex came over the hills into my town and ate everyone and destroyed everything I'd always end up being the last one left and under my bed trying not to breath heavy as to not alert the trex to my location all while my heart is racing and aware the trex would find me and eat me and everytime I'd crash threw the roof and eat me from under the bed I never woke up till after I'd felt the trexs first chomp on my body then I'd wake myself up it never let me out till I had felt atleast one chomp. I could probably right a book of all my dreams and my night terrors so I'll leave it hear, iv rambled enough, hope someone enjoys my ramblings. I no longer have terrors and nightmares that I can't wake up from as soon as they start to get hairy but I'm on of the most mentally damaged people you'll meet and I breath anxiety I should be riddled with night terrors and bad dreams. It's a miracle. Now I just have dreams where iv lost someone important or someone I love has died which I also had as a child I just don't wake up crying in a hyperventilating state. I might wake up winpering from my loose inside my dream just very rarely.

I couldn’t make it go away. I had to wake her father up because it lasted a good hour. She had about 4-5 episodes, not every night but close together and then it stopped. My 12 yr old son started getting this And I did not know what it was the first few episodes until I searched it. It is terrifying to experience . He does not respond to any question related to what he is fearfully saying , BUT when I ask “do you want water?” He says YES and the moment I give him , his face and behavior changes back to normal (without being disoriented ). So I just change topic and say something like “oh you’re so sweaty” while rubbing his back. He responds to that (as his normal self) and goes straight back to sleep . Try it.

As a person who has light night terrors I can confirm all of these things. Although when you do have night terrors you can sometimes respond but not always clearly. It’s like sleep walking, you can talk to them and they might answer but in short sentences and mumbled words. I haven’t had many maybe like 5-8 but we still keep an eye on them. It is a really traumatic experience, and it’s hard to wake up from. You can see what’s going on and hear what people tell you but it’s hard to respond and since I have asthma it’s hard to breathe. For me the best solution is to keep them close, hug them, and just do what you would do for a regular panic attack. Except you just need to stay quiet. Trying to wake someone up from a night terror mostly just makes it worse.

I had no idea about how different nightmares and night terrors are. Until now I pretty much assumed they were pretty similar. I had no idea that people with night terrors experience complete amnesia around the experience and rely on others to fill them in, while people with nightmares usually remember them and the emotions that they felt. It has to be completely unnerving to witness someone you love experience such an awful experience - especially your child. Glad to hear that they usually go away by the time kids get to adolescence.

Nothing seems to pacify him but he is a crier even when he was just days/months old so we thought it’s just normal… after almost 2 years of struggle… I finally searched online on what this is… some says it could be worms or sleep apnea or night terror… I’m pretty sure it’s night terror as he is actually asleep while having these episodes. Suffering with this has a adult. Not fun every one at the place I stay at look at me funny and ask if I was ok. I don't remember anything just felt so odd to wake up out of bed has your room mate tell you are you ok.

Night terrors sound awful. I've had bad dreams before and woken up with my heart racing, but thankfully it's been extremely rare.

I live with someone who has night terrors, except he’s not a child he’s a 350lb 30 year old man who’s built like an ox. Nothing like a possessed giant running down the hallways thinking something is trying to kill him. Scary.

Never heard about Night Terrors until I watched the tv show called Evil. Of course, they embodied night terrors into a demonic being but made him a bit comedic and called him George. Fortunately, I never experienced night terrors.

I used to have horrible night terrors as a kid, I'd commonly do stuff like doing forward rolls on the floor or change my underwear thinking it would make it stop. I'd often have some sort of scenario fixated in my head that was the root of the panic - like if you're dreaming you just know the setting of the dream - yeah flying cars are a thing so what? that makes sense in this dream... Well the best way I can describe is that but something really bad is happening. Once I thought 'The earth was going to blow up and all of civilization as left on rockets to safety and I was left behind' I mean, where do you start comprehending that? haha Good scenario to panic in. ITS ALL FUCKED AAAAHHHHHHHH. I tried running away out my house up the road once but I was caught by a relative before I got far, God knows where I would have ended up. My cure for night terrors: go to the toilet lmao I'd just pee and walk out the bathroom like nothing was up - those few seconds of doing something you need to relax but concentrate to accomplish just made me snap out of it.

I am fortunate that my kids so far have not experienced this. I can imagine how frightening this would be for kids and parents. Maybe the fact that my kids share a room is reassuring to both of them.
