Today we're in Berlin, Germany, to see what are people wearing abroad in Germany. Berlin has always been an intriguing place for me. I share with it painful associations of what was done to my people there not so long ago, and yet, over the decades Berlin has flourished into what seems like one of the leading European cities in culture, diversity and tolerance. I wanted to explore this dichotomy further, to see how real berliners feel about their city, and how they express themselves through fashion.

As a Berliner I don't like the way berlin has changed and I have some problems with the international hipster bubble. There are a lot of people who are just consuming the city and don't give anything back. They behave like superficial assholes and label at with "freedom". They having some wild years and then moving back to their hometown to getting kids. While don't have any respect for people actually living here. There are neighbours with kids? Not my problem I'm doing drugs in the yard and playing music till 7am cos "it's berlin"

as a berliner, thank you. especially I'm bothered by internationals who pay insane prices. 18sqm in Friedrichshain and paying 850€? Sure, if you come from NYC or Paris seems like a catch. But not the reality for the people from Berlin and super harmful!

As a berliner I feel the same. Many foreign hipsters here are not interested in german people and many speak after 10 years not a single word german.

sprichst mir aus der Seele. Fühle mich teilweise echt schlecht wegen meiner automatischen Abneigung gegenüber Touristen, da ja jeder ansich herkommen sollte um sich die vielen Museen anzuschauen und sich generell mit der Geschichte unserer Stadt auseinander setzten kann. Aber dieses Gelaber von wegen "oh i love the vibe, people are so open here" geht mir mittlerweile todes auf den Sack. Dass Berlin internationaler als andere deutsche Städte ist finde ich gut, aber mittlerweile hab ich das Gefühl dass viele der neuen Mitbewohner hier (wie du schon gut gesagt hast) Berlin als Art Abenteuerurlaub/spielplatz sehen, den Sie in ein paar Jahren eh wieder verlassen.

@@fiaska1222 Ich muss euch aber sagen dass mein Deutsch nach 20 Jahren relativ gut ist, ich lese, mag deutsche Filme und Sport usw. Kontakte bleiben trotzdem wenige, die Deutschen sind einfach zurückhaltender, auch in Berlin

This question of ‘is Berlin tolerant?’ Is interesting to me. I’ve lived in Berlin for almost 4 years. Yes, there is this surface level freedom of expression and sexuality, but to feel safe and accepted in a city goes beyond identity. When it comes to finding an apartment/safe living situation that will allow you to register at (which is absolutely critica for so many things from getting a job to health insurance), getting compassionate medical care, being treated with respect at bureaucratic offices, Berlin is painfully lacking. If you don’t speak German well, you will always be seen and treated as ‘Auslander’. Berlin is a dynamic and creative place, but it is also incredibly loud, indifferent, transient and lonely. Mental health is a crisis point here too, and good luck finding appropriate help for this. But I do love the city, I just think we need to be honest about experiences beyond partying and skating and dressing a certain way.

This right here!!! Berlin is an amazing city to live in, but it is tough af: weather, mental health, loneliness and rising prices + it is a very tolerant city but just like anywhere else there are intolerant ppl, luckily younger ppl are more open tha older ppl

@@manfrevanderland9333 "Young people are more open than older people" people told me this when I was 18 and now I'm 43. They say that to all generations. Don't feel special. I suppose that in 8 or 10 years you will no longer be open. Time goes by very fast ;)

to be fair Berlin belongs more to the cities that accept people that don't speak german. I know people that live here for years and never saw the need to learn german 'cause they expect everyone else to speak to them in English or they work in a place where there isn't a need to know the language. Finding an apartment is extremely difficult, bureaucratic offices are so badly organized but still better than where I'm from. There are actually a lot of people that work for free helping others (to the point that I think Berlin takes advantage of it) but often people don't know or don't wanna take this help. Of course, Berlin has its problem but just the fact that people can be so diverse and individualistic shows that it does this better than a lot (if not most) other cities... but of course, everything comes with its price. I am a very shy person but still find Berlin a pretty city. The whole partying world is very superficial but if you really want you can find people that wanna invest more in friendships. There is something for everyone.

Tbh I have always felt like that even the whole nightlife and sexual liberation community is not that tolerant and actually looks down on you if you‘re not exactly like that and don‘t want to dress in leather straps and nipple stickers or do insane amounts of drugs. I love the music and going to clubs in Berlin and engage in all of that, just dialed down a bit and I‘ve had weird interactions with people there bc I‘m too much of a normie I guess

As someone who lives in Berlin thats a lie. Most of the real Germans don’t have work and are getting money from the government. Most of the workers in Berlin are immigrants! Your comment is just racist

I've been living in Berlin for years, and people are tolerant only when others dress up like shit. As someone with east European ancestry, I used to dress up nicely, and I get plenty of unwanted attention outside. I literally see how people judge me in ubahn for a classy-balanced style

So true! I notice this as a native german too. People like to call themselves tolerant and open-minded, but as someone who likes a feminine and put-together style, I feel like these people get uncomfortable really quick.

Yeah Berlin is cool and tolerant but the "hip" districts like prenzlauer berg and kreuzberg, mitte, neukölln etc make maybe 35% of the whole city, it depends so much on the district if you want to talk about tolerance and how open and safe it is

I'm from Sydney & have lived/worked in London, Chicago, Toronto, Melbourne, Brisbane & San Francisco with the last 4 in London. I travelled in Leipzig for 2 weeks & Berlin for 3 weeks to see if I want to move there & I fell in love with the people & the city. I know my perspective is limited as I have only travelled there but my initial impression is that the people are overall genuine, open minded, diverse, inquisitive & free spirited. Especially as someone who's only lived in larger cities. I found people got to know me as a person & were curious about my background & story rather than just asking what I do/how much I make straight away. I felt so welcome & embraced. Many times people would speak to me in German & not automatically assume I don't speak it as I look asian. It's not the most beautiful city architecturally but it's eclectic, has character, quite green, always changing, unique history & amazing people overall. Yes there's the best techno scene in the world, I was lucky to go to Tresor, Kitkat, Sisyphos (nicht geburtstag) & About Blank but also it's what you make of it. I also went to comedy, mauer park sundays, local music jam session, farmers markets, a small singer songwriter music night, jazz, art shows etc. & met many locals. No place is perfect but it's an exciting, artistic, musical, ever changing city & you'll either love it or hate it. Probably good to know yourself before moving here or you could get consumed by it. It's not the energy for everyone but I can see myself moving here, further learning German, growing, learning & hopefully contributing to the culture of the city.

i’m going to berlin in a month so i’m definitely adding eveywhere you went to my itinerary!! i’ve been drawn to berlin for years, especially with the tragic history of it and how it seems they’ve manage to turn things around, so i’m so excited to go (and this video made me even more excited!!)

I'm so excited for you to go!!! definitely hit up Tempelhofer with a book, a picnic and a frisbee-- and go there at sunset/golden hour. Also go to brammibals! its a vegan donut place that I didn't include in the vid but its soooo good.

the best way to learn Berlin is to just walk and walk, if you get lost the better :) here a little list of good restaurants in Berlin: Kaplan (very good Döner) Mustafa's Döner (famous veggie Dönner) Amrit am Kottbusser Tor (indian very pretty and one plate is enough for two people) Kokolo Ramen (amazing Ramen soup) Arirang (Korean bbq, it'S very cheap if you go with a group. Staff not so nice but the food is superb) Hanoi Dehli (if you wanna good sushi) Shayan (persian restaurant. little bit expensive but very yummy meat) House of small wonder( japanese, little bit expensive but the entrance is very pretty for ig) Tian Fu (Chinese hotpot) tucano coffee ( I love their cakes :P) The alley tea house ( best bubble tea for me) shiso burger (hamburger in asian style) Yuuka (if you just want an asian all you can eat) others (that I haven't visit): Blumen-cafe (cafe with ton of plants) Kisso (good sushi, pretty restaurant) Cafe der Gartenacademie (The cafe of a garden academia, the cakes look amazing) so other tips: If you're gonna come in august, you can buy the 9 euro ticket. With it you have a train ticket for the whole month and can even use it to travel around the cities. If you wanna save money, you can use too good to go. It's an app that sell's ''old'' food for less than the normal price. If you need a toilet, you can always use the ones in the university faculties (they should be open until 8 pm or so) Also the universities have canteens where they sell meals for cheaper than usual (I recommend the mensa Nord) I heard at 11 am in front of the Brandenburger tor there is always a tour for free (but please give the tour guide tip) There'S the Viktoriapark that I like very much, it has a small waterfall and you have a good look over Berlin from the top :3 There is a page called gratis-in-berlin there you can see daily free events in Berlin. Also umweltkalender-berlin but this is more for ecofriendly events In a lot of cafes, you can let them fill your own lunchbox and mug you can drink tap water without a problem there are some rivers where you can go swimming and swimming places are relative cheap so bring your swimsuit Have a nice trip!!

Super interesting video! I am now living in Berlin in the last seven years, and before I lived in another large German City in the north. Berlin is very divers and you have those vibrant parts of the city you shared in your video, but also calmer parts like Charlottenburg or less touristy parts like Köpenick and lots in-between. On the surface Berlin is a tolerant city and nobody discriminates you for your looks. I dress very different to the typical Berlin look, with high heels, dresses, make up, curled hair, high quality items and I never get any looks. But it is true that if you have a non-German name it is much harder to get a flat. For example, my sister found a new flat in two weeks, whereas her friend with an Italian surname and an higher budget searched for several month without even getting invited to a viewing. In terms of jobs I think there many companies very open in Berlin, but you also need good qualifications to get into those companies. Also, because there are more and more companies based in Berlin with international relevance, with good paying jobs, living standards but also costs are growing super-fast. Because of that I feel Berlin becomes less and less tolerant against people with lower financial freedom like students, young families, or older people.

I once moved from Frankfurt to Berlin for the sake of fleeing the "finance capital" for a more creative environment - but during the past 7 years of my absence even Frankfurt in my eyes changed so much to the positive side so now I would live there again. The high fluctuation tho is also an aspect I can empathise with I see locals complaining about: people come to the city with the Berghain experience expectations, "consuming" the city for a time of their life but not giving back. We used to live in Moabit which was more of a melting pot of local "Ur-Berliners" & (regional / international ) migrants. Couldn't have imagined tho living in a district full of expats :D talking about "all-black" idk - Guess it was more of a thing 5 years ago but I'm still doing it since it's easy to decide what to wear and it gets you not only through your dirty city day by day while maintaining your "anonymity" but also stays clean on a bike, potential coffee spills etc. Also my choice for traveling light. just loving it. The things I customise are my bike & laptop so they less likely get stolen and even though my direct fashion outfit is pretty "normcore" I still appear as "colorful spot" in the city.

Berlin is far more tolerant than lot of metro cities in the world..,great place to live...and yes its obviously better to understand a bit of the language..no ones asking you to give a speech in it.... it creates a peaceful atmosphere among the locals ...the same applies to any other city u plan to live in...

I don't know why but for me it feels like some of the people who showed their outfit were not very authentic. They say they dress individual and don't care about what's "In" and what's "out" but In my opinion they only dress like that because its trendy and their peer group is dressing like that as well. I don't really get why everyone is trying so bad to be unique when it comes to how they dress. as if they don't have other and way more important things to do in / with their life than thinking about which crystal to put on their necklace.

For subtitle users: Marco says at 7:25 looking at his beer "This is not from a Späti but from a beautiful event we just have been to". Späti meaning Spätkauf (lateshop), a little kiosk or shop that can be open late unlike supermarkets that close usually betwenn 8 and 10pm.

6:17 - These houses aren't new. Actually they're "Altbau" and were built before 1910 :) Especially the 3 story building is older, since you're around Mitte/Prenzlauer Berg. Often the ornaments (Stuck) fell off due to the bombings and just weren't rebuilt.

I miss berlin! But surprisingly the original Berliners. I lived and worked in the east as a woman with a migration background. Yes, the Berliners are unique but that's what I love about them. I don't just miss the cool scenes... I miss moments when I had to learn that „Brötchen“ are „Schrippen“ and „Sonnabend“ means „Saturday“.

I have visited berlin for 2 months, to mostly check it out and start learning German to see if i would like to study university there, i am a muslim hijabi women, now i was always treated well as in customer service, but i did receive some micro aggressions in public transportation , it is still tolerant to a point but if you are a hijabi keep in mind that ppl will purposely avoid you (in public transportation mostly not streets) and if you want to make friends you MUST initiate the friendship bc most of the time ppl will not talk to you, but overall my experience is not bad cause once you talk with people they tend to be respectable, tbh i think berlin and london are probably the most tolerant europe capital cities in my opinion, i will coming to berlin december

Having lived in Berlin 8 years. I can tell you for sure. Berlin is _not_ tolerant at all. Thank me later (As a tourist if you don't understand German on a native level you will probably not notice tho')

Nice vibes 🥰🥰 I'm living in Berlin and I have to say that not all people are tolerant, it really depends on which circle/environment you are, and as a BIPOC person you get judged and fetishized a lot. All the time when outside, street or subway, people here stare a lot and sometimes it can make you feel uncomfortable 😞

Strong agree - I lived in Berlin for 4 years and as a biracial woman found the racism and prejudice intolerable. Needed therapy for years after leaving - much happier now.

A Berliner here.. well is it tolerant around here? This question is tricky, cause the districts are differing a lot. The more inner city more diverse districts (friedrichshain,xberg,neukölln in parts) typically show tolerance but in some other districts streotypical german rassist attitutes are showing. Also it very much depends on your ethnicity how you perceive tolerance because some bring there enmity here it might be between different arabic nationalities e.g. Also gentrification is a huge problem here which is pushing people that are not havng enough income out, so this is a form of intolerance of its own.

How should the western Allies shut down streets and supply chains when east berlin wasn’t closed off any part of the ddr & sowjet Union. It was West Berlin that was closed off and tried to be shut down.

I lived near the North Sea half of my life, few years in Hamburg and 2 years in Berlin now. Been to many cities in Germany and I think Berlin is the most tolerant in Germany. No one cares how you look here in Berlin, but in the village I grew up people would talk shit behind your back 24/7. also I feel topics like racism and lgbtq+ are taken more serious in Berlin. But of course there are still some conservative people living here. But in comparison I would definitely say it’s the most tolerant city.

7:27 he says "Späti" which is the short form for "Spätkauf" (and basically the only term anyone ever uses). that are shops generally everywhere around the corner in all of germany which are opened 24/7 and have everything you could need around the clock.

It was even used as a prison for undesirables in the 30s. Tempelhoff had many uses throughout the years, but I don’t really care what it’s known for most? My point was revitalization and redemption. Being tolerated means that you may be there under certain terms and conditions but will never be a part of it. It is not a positive or progressive thing but more of an us versus them, a way to once again distinguish between people. Because you named Jewish memorial, Jewish people were tolerated for centuries until they chose not to tolerate them anymore.

I personally agree with the notion that Berlin might be the freest city in Europe, which probably makes it the freest city in the world, or at least a solid candidate. I see lots of complains and contraarguments in the comments, and I think they're valid, but I see it like "nothing is perfect". Yes, even the nicest cities on Earth are not perfect, but it doesn't say a lot about the city itself, more about the humanity and how we create problems or how complicated we are, how hard it is to take a bunch of territory and make it a nice place. Honestly, if we compare even the poorest and most conservative country of the EU, it will be way more progressive and greater to live than poor authoritarian countries out there, and there are so many of them, literally the largest portion of the planet is not a nice place to live in. So when we think globally like that, Berlin is almost heaven. It depends on personal needs of course, but for a young gay girl like me it certainly is

There are laws against discrimination at the work place because of your religious believes. So if that happened sue the company. Other than that it's true that it can be hard for foreigners to get help at public offices etc. Despite all the tolerance Berlin is a prime example of how hard inclusion is to accomplish. Yes the turkish and arabic cultures are huge part of Berlin but they are integrated at best but not included. Everything is still so seperated from each other even after 50 years. I wish the cultures would mix more (without religious influence). I don't see myself getting an invite to Turkish clubs any time in the next 50 years because they want to stay within themself. This also applies the other way round. A lot of Germans don't want that either. It's easy to say Germans are not accepting of other cultures when the other cultures are the same.

Tolerance has to happen on both sides. Very religious people, especially muslims, are usually not very tolerant. They don't fit into a freedom loving society.

I don't get how some people in the vid and in the comments can romanticize Berlin in that way. It has plenty of rough spots, conflicts between different political and religious factions, enormous issues with Antisemitism, Homophobia and Racism in certain parts of town and is run down due to long lasting political mistakes. You do have everything at your fingertips, especially when you are an Observant Jew or Muslim but are also in the midst of conflict when it comes to Israel and Palestine, Far Right rallies organized by AfD, Querdenken and adjacent organizations and so on. Hence why I live in Hamburg. Respect for the video and the work you've put in Batsheva, it was insightful! Kol tov!

I live in New Zealand. I haven't been to Germany. I would like to visit. At the market in this video there are some model toy cars. In my childhood i was into cars. I had die-cast metal Dinky toy cars. My favorite ones were German made Marklin models. Marklin were known for their train sets. The toy cars were very detailed. Audi, VW, Mercedes- Benz, BMW models I had. I no longer have them. I sold them before going to live in Australia years ago. Enjoyed viewing this fashion posting. From Carl.

i'm a bit annoyed with the english speaking 'hip' crowd that has been moving to berlin for the past seven years or so. To me a prime example is the Maybachufer weekly market. It used to be a place where you would do your busy grocery shopping and it was very turkish and vibrant. But these days you have all these english speaking folks slowly walking around with their damn bikes in the narrow space between stalls and it's an issue bc they stop and talk and literally clog up the whole space. Many sellers have also changed, being increasingly replaced by artists. I get it, some people like 'schlendern' but the Maybachufer market isn't exactly build for that. Or wasn't at the very least. It's the old migrant communuties that built up many of those 'hip' spaces you see, specifically in kreuzberg and the surrounding areas, but they get squeezed out by this kind of crowd. Personally I'd prefer to see new markets pop up instead (stilk at maybachufer even, just on another day for example) where this specific crowd does their own thing, but it is sad how the original flair has been changed so much. Kreuzberg for example to me was built up by two main crowds, piss poor german punks living in the streets and turkish migrants, ever since the 60s, 70s. Not exactly the most popular crowd and even to this day it feels like they are tolerated, not accepted. Berlin is made up if too many different neighborhoods to really give one solid answer on the tolerance question. Like every 500 meters the vibe changes a little each time, it feels like. Look no further than rixdorf in neukölln. You get whiplash from that contrast, just architectually speaking. But the crowds are different too. So i'd say it really depends where you are, who you are, and what kind of tolerance you are looking for. Being left to yourself and being accepted are two very different things.

Felt like I saw more Brits and Americans in this video than Berliners, but that's just how it goes. I definitely agree with those that said the city is being oversaturated by those who just consume the environment without reciprocating. Those who aren't from here come and buy an apartment that's expensive for our standards, but cheap for them, and just adds to the housing crisis that's already happening. It's a tradeoff that has been generating frustration for some time. Also, I didn't really see the representation I'm accustomed to in this video, but I'm guessing she approached those she resonated with more like the trendy hipster types than let's say my friends in TNs lol

honestly, I went where my German friends told me to. I went to Kreuzberg, I went to tempelhoffer field, where I had initially went with 2 German friends who live in neukolln. I made sure to interview Hannah, as well as Sohee -- 2 German minorities, and I approached the people I thought dressed well. The fact that they weren't all German is testament to how international Berlin is.

They do fail to mention that a lot of Germans actually hate Berlin. Unemployment, debt, outdated infrastructure, slow and weird political leadership... There is a reason why Berlin is one of the few capitals that would actually raise the country's GDP if it was removed from the country, while other country's capital is usually also the economic capital.
