I have seen the expression on The face of The Painter before many times. It is the look of a child who is tired and grumpy. All my kids looked like this when I woke them up early to drop them off at a sitter on the way to work.

Life is tragic and grotesque, powerful people are greedy, perverse and violent, love is transitory, unhappiness is more constant than not being there, relatives and friends die leaving us alone and our dreams end, are interrupted or turned into nightmares. It is inevitable that art reflects all of this. Everything that is ugly, scary, strange, repulsive and threatening captures our attention and makes us wake up to unpleasant realities that exist beneath the surface of our illusions. But it also makes us enjoy happy moments and value more what is beautiful, simple, natural, innocent and good.
