Very helpful. My leg likes to ask for something and then stay on (which eventually makes it mean nothing) which I am now becoming very aware of. Don’t leave your leg on even while in counter canter, my mind is blown. So helpful. 🙌🏻

Shoulder in - Legs and shoulders stay the same position of the pelvis changes. Leg yield - more pronounced weight to the inside. Traver - more pronounced weight to inside, outside leg bent back a little but not on, allowing the ribcage to bend a bit more. Oh my goodness i can't absorb any more at the moment. Going to have to watch this several times to get my head round it. I can see how once you've understood the feeling, the reaction and the outcome your ability to achieve is within your grasp. Brilliant video. I'm so miffed my riding years have past but what a blessing to all those still able to ride. You little star Alicia.⭐

I love the banana analogy and it has helped me tremendously. However, I struggle with keeping the weight in my feet the same especially going to the left as I allow my right leg to be lazy. What can I do to help myself keep the weight in my stirrups consistent.

Thanks Wessel for being such a good boy so Alicia can show her seat. Really mind blown again. It became so clear on where to sit but also where to hold your outside leg in the travers. I have to confess I sometimes have the feeling to hold the horse in a position during the travers. So gonna try to not hold the horse during my next lesson. It will really help with progress in the lateral work. Thanks!!!!!!

So, at "shoulder in" we have to move slightly to the inside but the weight in the stirrups remains the same. My coach has also told me that I should put 80% of my weight on my stirrups and my seat should be independent and I believe that this is more secure as well. (the example with the pony helped!) And now I can understand the difference between a leg yield and a shoulder in. Thank you for the information!

I have always taught both horses and students shoulder fore/shoulder in/travers/renvers as a biomechanical aid where everything is more or less automatic: everything starts from a very small turn or advance from the hips, no leaning or tipping allowed, shoulders and hands follow the hips and position the forehand. Your body position naturally encourages the horse to move the way you want without resistance and without a large cognitive load on the rider (ie, the rider overthinking and being unable to put the whole picture together when aids are broken down into too many steps). I have found that I can teach young horses as well as beginner riders, neither of which has ever done the lateral positions, to successfully perform these movements in just a few ssssions. The important thing is to sit straight, no leaning or tipping, or as you put it, being even in both stirrups, and also not to overdo the hip movement- horses are very sensitive and do feel the small movement in your hip and overdoing the aids and turning yourself into a pretzel will not make the aid more effective and may actually end up giving the horse a message you didnt intend..

These moves are so far beyond me, BUT thinking about weight distribution and my seat bones like this is exactly what I needed right now. My lesson horse has taken to spiraling in and refusing to go on the rail about halfway through my lessons, so I know my body is getting twisted as I get tired, even though I can’t feel it. I’ve identified that when I try to push with my inside leg, I’m actually lifting that seat bone and pushing my weight into my outside stirrup/seat bone, so my seat is saying go in while my reins are saying go out-super frustrating for both of us. I think focusing on the 80/20 rule is going to help me keep straighter this weekend. Thanks again!

Well now...that makes sense! Having it explained at the halt really makes it easy to understand. I'm still going to have to watch this episode a few times to really memorize it but now it at least isn't rocket science. 🤣 The 80-20 rule, and where to actually "sit" in the saddle were my biggest learnings from this episode! Thanks for everything!

You are a gem, Alicia! This is so perfectly timed - I’m so bad at lateral work. My biggest takeaway: using bum alignment to control the rib cage rather than changing weight in feet. The biggest eye opener: 80-20 rule. I’ve definitely been a sack-o-potatoes with putting too much weight into saddle. I think it’s much easier to control pelvis position when you’re light in your seat. Can’t wait to try 80-20 during my ride tonight. Practicing 80-20 on my yoga ball now and shifting pelvis while keeping weight in feet the same!

To see where to sit exacly when doing different exercises is really helpful. Important to know that there has to be the exacly same weight in both stirrups ALWAYS and 90 % of your total weight in it - just change the positioning in the sattle💡.

To see the actual position of both the rider and the horse for each movement is super helpful as it really allows me to see the degree of angle and the bend required as well as where I need to be. Thank you so much for this!! I’ve been struggling with my horse to make what I’m asking clearer for him and this helps 100%!! Also it was so interesting to hear the 80%/20% since everyone focuses so much on seat you forget where most your weight should be!

Another really helpful video - thank you so much! It was AMAZING to be able to see the aids for these movements in halt…I’ve never encountered that before and it makes a huge difference - such a great way of teaching it so thanks Alicia (and Wessel!) for thinking a bit outside of the box for those of us who are a bit more visual learners and need to see it! So much to learn but I got a real “lightbulb” moment from the 80-20 discussion with your DMA member as I’ve never really thought about how to distribute my weight before - I was so focussed on keeping all of my weight in my legs and heels down but your explanation is much better! I’ll think about that at my next ride. Thank you! 🙏👍 x

Wow. Watching you go back-and-forth between Renvers to Shoulder In made the difference so obvious!!! I am not here yet in my training, but I am tracking with you and will for sure save this and come back when I am ready to start practicing!!! The 80/20 feet lesson from DMA was gold for me. Such a good tip! Also I feel like you need shirts that say “begin with the end in mind” 😊👏🏼

Super helpful! My pony and I are TOTALLY going to work on this! I have been doing pelvis exercises ever since you did the pilates videos and I have gotten SO good! I love how you explain the seat. My pony bucks if she gets too excited so I will definitely add 80-20 to my warmup checkup! Thank you!

Great video! My biggest takeaway was the 80/20. I've tried thinking "feet on the ground" but I find that tough for me to do. The "moving your seat to create space" was pretty cool as well. Thank you for this video!

So here’s what I love about Alicia’s teaching: she teaches in a way I can actually remember and apply when I’m riding. Banana ✅ Equal weight in both feet ✅ 80 feet 20 seat ✅ Every single time I ride now, I use these tips. Now travers-I feel like I have a better feel for what it should look like after watching this video. And Renvers!! Every time I think of doing renvers I have to look at my phone to remember what it looks like 😂 Now I won’t have to-I’m just going to take my shoulder in and reverse the bend. Such an easy way to remember it. Absolutely love your videos. I learn so much. ❤️

The 80/20 rule has been the biggest game changer for me. Years of being told to sit deep in the saddle made me ride with a very heavy seat and clamped on thighs. Also putting leg back into neutral position during counter canter was another tip I didn’t know. Thanks Alicia and Wessel for this very informative video.

Excellent, thankyou Alicia! Yes, I'm one of those people having posed the how to questions about these advanced moves! So wonderful & very helpful to see the tracks, see the line of the horse, see the rider's seat & the movement of rib cage. Now let's see how possible it is to get these moves translated into a reality with my unschooled horse! One thing she does do well is move off the leg. But control of the shoulder has been really tricky for us to achieve. Thankyou so much for such a great visual representation; & kudos to Wessel The Great! He's so divine. 🐴🐎👏👏👏💞🙏

Love Wessel, what a good boy taking one for the team ❤️ I definitely need to shorten my stirrups by at least one hole. I'm in a standing position, however I don't have enough room between the saddle and my crotch and bum. I realize now this will help me feel safer and also be able to move my pelvis where I need too while still keeping the weight in my. Stirrups. I'll be changing this tomorrow and trying this all out. So excited 😁

I love seeing the actual positions of where your body should be in relation to the horse at a standstill. Seeing it in motion is harder to catch, especially when the body position change is minimal. Will definitely be using this in my training of my super green filly (we just got off the lead line and now working on steering while keeping impulsion. She is unsure of herself without the side walker by her side at all times, but we will get there! )

Thank you for another very informative video! I think my biggest takeaways were that your pelvis actually influences a lot more than I originally thought and even just slightly tweaking it can have such a huge impact! The 80-20 rule with your feet also sounds like an amazing exercise and I can’t wait to try it and hopefully stay with my horse when he spooks! Wesell is also so patient and a little star!
