I use sailor 123 in my vintage flex Mabie Todd. Never railroads and has fantastic shading

I have shockingly gorgeous results with Organic Studios “Twilight” in my metal Pilot Falcon with a SEF. It looks like it’s almost metal-plated in the right light, and the colouring is just divine.

Exact same pen as I have. I don't see it too often that ppl got the SEF. I love my iroshizuku inks for this pen too. I will try your suggestion too

I had a pilot 912 fa that railroaded with about every ink I’ve tried but it worked amazing with platinum carbon black.

I'm glad you did this because I have been wondering the same thing... Also figure they would be good for better nibs too, but yes what Drew says about the feed....I may need to look into trying stuff out on one of my pens, it never seems to have enough ink

I like my Mistletoe from Robert Oster in my ebonite feed flex pens. You get shade and sheen.

Thank you so much for this! I just discovered flex nibs and am having a blast with my Noodler's, so I ordered to Monteverde Monza from y'all...and now I know to be aware that it might get overwhelmed. With those smaller-channel feeds, would a shimmer be advised against (due to possible clogging/further narrowing of the channel with the particulates)? Hrmmm....

Interesting commentary. I just purchased my first flex nib. It's a Conklin Omniflex. I have to say....I was expecting more 'flex' I guess. Need to spend some more time writing with it.

Platinum carbon black is amazing for flex my custom 912 stock feed would only work with platinum and the ebonite feed makes it a waterfall

I have a question… Did you get your first fountain pen online or at a retail store? I live in dc and got my first pen; A lamy safari at a retail store in rockville. Its kinda sad that there is barely any retail stores as I find that it can be very helpful to see something in person rather than online in some cases. Great video!

Since they didn’t name many flex specific examples, here are some inks that perform great with absolutely no railroading in my Pilot Custom 912 FA and some vintage pens such as the Mabie Todd Swan. These inks work gret for me: Noodlers Heart of Darkness, super dark and wet, maybe one of the wettest inks I own and perfect for flex nibs imo. Iroshizuku Asa Gao J. Herbin Eclat de Saphir Diamine Earl Grey Montblanc Royal Blue

Adding water to ink does not make 'wetter'. Actually it makes drier because it makes water to "stick" to feed/nib - surface tension. If you want to make your ink wetter, you have to add surfactant. You can buy white lightening solution from another pen vendor. Or you can add dish washing soap. Just go easy on them - one tiny needle tip amount will make your ink gusher. Too much soap makes it is harder to control flow when you flex the pen.

Thanks for the insight. I have a Noodler's Konrand inked with Vinta Azure. Still railroads despite adjusting and re.adjusting as per guidance from previous videos. Ill use a different ink then. Thanks!

Pelikan 4001 and Sailor “gentle” blue both water based inks, if I am not wrong, with Pelikan being dry compared to the Sailor. I wonder what determines “wet” as “dry”. Viscosity (how freely it flows), water content, time, or time it takes to dry only.

Apache sunset in tripletail and I would be waiting a lifetime for it to dry, for that reason I don't like using apache sunset in super wet writing pens. Black Swan, absolutely gorgeous color but has stained the demonstrator tripletail black, is the black dye or pigment in the ink to be blamed. Also stains black in regular converters. So for aesthetic reasons I have to avoid it in any sort of demonstrator pen. KWZ Honey is excellent with flex nibs and great shading too.

You guys always make sure to mention "Careful... doing this will definitely void your warrantee!" When have you thought to yourselves: "WHEW! Thank God this pen still is under warrantee!!!!" What does a fountain pen warrantee actually cover? For how long? Can you tell us some "Warrantee Tales"? (Maybe ask listener-watchers to share their stories, as well?)

I have found that Autumn Oak is a rather dry writer, though. I think that reds and oranges are a bit drier.

Hi guys, love the videos and great info. I have a question for you, or anyone who can shed some light about Noodler's Apache Sunset. I am trying to figure out what paper works with is as, tried it on normal paper, but no shading. Tomoe River feathered like crazy. Now attempting on Clairefontaine, but it takes hours to dry and not actually managed to get it to dry completely and gave up so used blotting paper as had to close the notebook ........ I'm using a Noodler's Ahab flex nib. Is there a particular paper that allows the ink to dry but maintain it's great shading qualities? Thanks

My Pilot 912 FA nib railroaded badly with the stock feed. It was basically unusable. A 3-channel ebonite feed from The Nib Factory turned it into one of the smoothest writers I own, and it hasn't railroaded once. Pilot really should address this issue.

I don't think I can recommend trying to modify a Kaweco Sport to function as a flex pen. Both the nib and the feed would need to be modified, and for what that would cost, you could buy a pen that already comes with a flex nib. - Drew

I’ve heard that the best way to test an ink for a flex pen is to shake the bottle. If it forms and keeps its bubbles it is less likely to railroad. Anyone ever tried it?

I've gotten the best results (so far) with a Noodler's Ahab running Heart of Darkness, Cardinal Kestrel and Antietam inks (on Rhodia and Clairfontaine paper). They can all sustain a fairly abusive flex.

Definitely not a flex nib! They'll likely put down too much ink. I'd recommend something with a fine or extra-fine nib paired with an ink that doesn't dry to fast. - Drew

My problem is that I want some flex (not tons, but some, for interest in my drawings) but I want water-resistant ink so I can add watercolor to my sketches.

Instead of flex I would say try out a fude nib for drawing. You can get line variation by changing the angles. I use a cheap Chinese fude nib (jinhao, hero, etc) fountain pen paired with platinum carbon black for drawing. The carbon black takes watercolor wash over it like a champ, best black ink imo.

@@CathyJohnson noodler's ahab would suit that I guess. And I would suggest getting their untipped flex nib, gives a much finer line compared to the tipped nib that comes with the pen.

On the Pilot Custom 912, what’s the difference between the FA, Soft Fine, And Waverly nibs?

They are three different nib. Soft Fine is just have a bit of bounce. Waverly is a upturn nib. It is very smooth all diff direction so I was told it is good for left-handed people ( over and under writers ). FA is a flexy nib ( not vintage ). You can get good line variation as you put more pressure.

That's wrong about more water in ink making it wetter. Watering down a wet ink will often make it drier as water has higher surface tension than ink which has flow inproving additives. See it this way: Dish soap is thick, water is thin. But dish soap and water flows better than water itself.
