Modern, script, and decorative hurt the eye when used for body copy so only use them when you need to set the mood like important phrases and titles. Old style is kind the in between and is used for both reasons. San and slab are the standard body copy font styles. Like Helvetica and Times New Roman, it's easy and helps get the words across. However San Serif is the more common because it's what most comic creators end up using in their comics. But in my opinion script is the best because it's the broadest category

For those willing to have a font solely for their indy comic, the Blambot fonts are quite a nice choice. For non commercial projects, Nate Piekos (creator of Blambot site) has really professional comic fonts for free for anyone. And *FOR COMMERCIAL* projects (that is, with which you you earn money, directly or indirectly), you can use them for free as well !!, provided you use them solely for making your comics with them. That is, not for making video games, videos, etc. But I believe he even allows to use the font in merchandise about your comics (t-shirts, mugs, etc) It's his way to support the comic indy authors. And it is really something to applaud. Has been doing this many, many years. Not all his fonts are at the same level, as the newer ones (also among the offered free) are definitely better. Me, I have purchased one of his best fonts (planning to buy more!). 30 USD is something that I consider very affordable for a high quality commercial font type (I even added a tip, as his effort in helping the indy authors is as amazing as it is uncommon) which includes regular, italic, bold, italic bold, a lot of features, all the EU character set... The commercial versions of his fonts, at least a lot of them (it says it in each font description) are prepared for the barred "I" issue. And have many other very pro features for a comic author. Frankly, it's difficult for comics that are going to be displayed on screen (webcomics) to see the difference between Blambot's ("BB") and Comiccraft's ("CC") fonts. If is there really a difference, I personally don't see them ( at least with the best of BB, of course), and I believe most of the audience here wouldn't notice, maybe very pro people in the industry, professional letterers would (or not)... I don't (I am an illustrator and graphic designer; have some (indy) experience in comics making). But I see a ton of differences between a whatever the free font for comics and a free font from Nate (BB). Meaning, it's _really_ worth it, not just because several of those are free. Among the free, I like "Unmasked "(no euro chars, but very readable, clean but with personality) , Anime Ace *3* (many European characters), _Red State Blue State_ if your comic is kind of humor based (and no need for euro characters). Letter-o-matic (no euro chars) has some personal punch that might be very convenient for many webcomics. It's a matter of preference and type of comic, really, among these. But much, much better are his commercial ones. And for 30 or 40 bucks (whichever font chosen) , imo, it's an absolute bargain. My favs are "Ready for Anything" (I think it's the most featured one), "Might Makes Right Pro" (many features, but mostly I love how amazing it looks in balloons and dialogs) , "Spinner Rack Pro" (the most readable one in small size, and this is very important to me). All these three do support all European characters and have all what an indy author would ever need, IMO. Comicraft (I plan on buying Wildwords, Samaritan or Meanwhile... in that order of preference) is absolutely amazing, you can't get better than that (other than a professional manual letterer, of course!), but I believe the first mention for indy authors should be Blambot, given the circumstances. Indeed, may just be me, but I like more "Ready for Everything", and even more, "Might Makes Right Pro" both from BB than all those others from CC. But this is just an opinion.

As informative as this video is, it didn’t really go in the direction I had in mind when suggesting this idea. I was thinking of dialogue and how different fonts give off different tones. I was hoping for what you did with your speech bubble video, but for different fonts.

I'm a legally blind illustrator and am finally printing my manga. What size do you guys suggest for a webcomic? I normally read on KINDLE so I can zoom in when I read comics by myself. BUT that makes it difficult for me to figure out how I should size my manga font.
@MonitorComics

Sorry for the late reply! Thank you for the comment, I'm happy to hear about your project! I've only posted on webtoons a few times, but from what I've seen, I just used their format suggestions: 800x1280 pixels. Obviously, you can make it longer depending on the length of your comic. From my own experience, I like to work larger, so I'll usually draw my comics on letter-sized paper or bigger and then size down to fit webtoons guidelines. You'll retain crisp quality and sharpness if you size down, if you draw small first it might be pixelated. I'm not an expert on webtoons, but I hope that helps!

I was working on a webtoon before the pandemic because there was a contest going on, but once my classes started back and things got into this weird "normal but not quite" phase, I haven't found the drive to continue :(. I have the story and over half of the chapters drawn out but I just can't find the energy for some reason.

I completely understand!! The pandemic has definitely taken its toll. Speaking from my own experience, I have definitely lost a ton of motivation to work lol. It's even worse being in school right now and getting fatigued from virtual classes. I'm at the point where I try to get away from my computer whenever I can haha. Don't beat yourself up too much, it's hard right now for creative people! Just take it slow, work at your own pace, and your work is going to be great!

Is CC Wild Words Roman free for private and commercial use? Oh and since upper and lower case are practically both upper case, but a bit different looking, what would you recommend using? :) P.S. Very nice video!
@MonitorComics
@MonitorComics 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment, YES CC Wild Words Roman is a free font for private and commercial use! The font takes inspiration from the professional comic font Wild Words, which is locked behind a paywall. The font creator of CC Wild Words Roman wanted to create a high-quality font with similar qualities that everyone can use! When I use CC wild words I typically just use the lowercase option UNLESS I have to deal with the "i" vs "l" situation. If I am starting a sentence with a word that begins with the letter "i" then I will use the upper case form so it has the feet and cant be confused with a lowercase L. If the letter "i" is in the middle of a word I will use the lowercase form. Hopefully, that helps!

Hello again! I'm happy to hear you have fully planned out the writing portion of your manga! What you're experiencing right now is burnout! Burnout can happen when you spend too long on one thing, causing a writer/artist block! Everybody goes through them, there's times where I'll have to take a few days off after finishing storyboards because I get sick of just working on it. The fact that you managed to even comment shows that you aren't 100% giving up on your project, which is a good sign! Take some time off, you finished one of the harder parts of the process! I find reading manga/comics or watching tv shows/anime help me regain motivation. Watching other artists on youtube can also be inspirational. All in all, just give yourself some time to regroup, you can always come back to your project! Best of luck!

@MonitorComics
@MonitorComics 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! At the end of the day, it's subjective. I've seen some people just use their normal font but make the speech bubble jaggedy/robotic. If I had to say though I feel like a bolded sans serif font would work best. Sans serif fonts are more modern and being bolded would add to the intensity. Maybe something like Futura. I'd poke around on google though, some people make fonts specifically for things like that. So whenever you got ten minutes just browse around some font sites. Hope that helps! Best of luck!

.... it's a good video about alphabetical forms. Try... when you're drawing, to think of the anatomical forms, that you're drawing, are cylinders. Try to always be aware of their shape and form. The form can shift, depending on how the cylinder is pointing away from you.... and the picture you're drawing is all about foreshortening... cylinders pointing away... tough picture. I suggest going for a reference and trying to SEE what your eyes and brain just accept as "a given"... when it's not. You're doing good. Keep at it. And if you want to learn how to draw backgrounds.
