This is a good summary. It’s a real issue but it’s very uncommon.

Not sure if id risk voiding warranty knowing there's a known issue with the older cars before adding more pressure on engine might be a really good idea to just have the rockers replaced with the updated parts as soon as its tuned Audi won't fix it if it goes then.

Audi doesn't just revise parts for the fun of it ; the revised part is substantially different and that problem is very real.

The part was not "revised", it's the v8tt rocker arm that they consolidated purchases for their models. The old rocker arms have been on VAG cars since 2016, including Porsche models.....take it for what you will....

I see it this way as well. If you have a model affected by this issue, save up some cash now or trade-in. For new buyers, this might be something to avoid altogether. I don't know why people are upset about this. It's an engineering fault. It happens.

I must say we done propably 20+ cars with this issue , some was just rocker arms , some needed camshaft some needed full engine rebuild. Rocker arms were upgraded under diffrent part number after July 2019. Every EA839 engine build before that day will have this problem at some point. How Audi is managing it? No fualt codes in the ECU its OK, ou the engine dont want to start enymore? You need a new engine :D.... reality

Totally agree, having watched the VAG Technic vids, they are not scare mongering they are being genuine. The problem to me is that it’s a ticking time bomb, realistically it will happen at some point in the engines life, factors like mileage don’t seem to come into the point where they fail, however the other factor that does is the use of the thin 0w 20 oil…again specified by Audi! Being an Engineer I’m in agreement the needle bearings are too small and it’s obvious they will fail…the proof of that is the beefed up bearings on the superseded arms! My S5 is a 2017 and I’m having mine replaced. Audi are being villains for not doing a major recall

Wym by July 2019? The new part was 0P2109417 roller rocker arm D - 06.08.2018 so I’m confused by the every car before July 2019 statement. I have a 2019 s4 build date is 09-18 which is 3 months after the new part so should I be worried?

Well, I agree that they are truthfully reporting on the cars that visit their shop. Their videos are always informative, but to draw wide conclusions from less than two dozen cars over a given sampling period and without full knowledge of the maintenance, ownership or driving history of any of these cars, we the viewer are left to draw weak conclusions. If factors such as mileage don't contribute to failure rates, how can anyone say "all EA389 engines will eventually fail d/t rocker arm" root causes? And as an engineer you undoubtedly realize solid conclusions about the size of rocker bearings and acceptable load characteristics over time cannot be made without knowledge of the exact materials used and the specific manufacturing process of the rockers themselves. As an owner of an early B9 SQ5, I am just as keen as everyone else to get to the bottom of this and to determine whether preemptive replacement is a worthwhile endeavor. But while there is definitely a problem in play, the true scope remains unknown because our working database consists purely of social media posts. Also agreed re: 0W20 oil, which seems silly especially for me in the south TX heat, but again I'm not an expert in fluid dynamics or engine lubrication needs. In spite of this I am now running 5W40, with fingers on each hand crossed.

Hi! My 2018 S5 Coupe threw code P90328 “knock sensor circuit high”. I immediately took it into the shop, engine still runs but power output is about 30% worse. What is the likelihood that the camshaft is damaged? I’m hoping I just need to replace the faulty rocker arms

This just happened to my 2018 s4, it was ordered before they were avaliable so it's one of the very first builds. I have 48k miles. I received the drive system malfunction error and has yet to work since. Local independent shop ran codes and used snake cam to take pictures of the broken arms inside. Had to get towed to dealer and am waiting for them to take a look. 😒 Absolute terrible feeling.

just an update for anyone who was curious. dealer finally took a look and confirmed the issue. should be warranty and was written up as the whole long block replacement. quoted at $18k for the block and $9k for labor, all together around $31k with the random taxes n bits n pieces. awaiting the process to get started still but some progress is better than none.

@@Michael-bu7ni the warranty took care of the costs. it took about 4 months from drop off to second pick up because they didn't do it right the first time. overall it cost around $500 of my cash for deductible and the cost of battery since they let it sit so long it died and warranty doesn't cover that I guess. I argued that it wouldn't have died if they didn't let it sit for 3 months before they even started. after new motor was installed they didn't do an alignment and forgot part of the turbo so I had to go back a second time for 2 weeks.

Just purchased a 2018 (Late 2017 build) B9 S5 Cab with 142,000 miles. As far as I know, the car hasn't been tuned. I confirmed the suspect rocker arms are installed with a scope. Used a stethoscope to listen for any signs of knocking or failure. So far, I do not hear or see any signs of failure. I don't know how long the current oil has been in the car so I'm going to drain that this weekend and get new oil at factory spec 0W-20 into it. I'll send in the current oil with a "best guess" of mileage on that oil. Once I'm at 5k, I'll send the oil in for an analysis and report results back here.

I found out that the Audi dealership I usually go to is using 5w-40 on my oil changes and I saw another comment on another video from this channel stating that viscosity is being used to not overheat the rocker arms.

This is data that we don't have on hand, and it is untraceable via VIN. However, we find this to not be a big enough issue to warrant concern.

We offer no guarantees that Audi will or will not see that your car has been previously flashed. We'd recommend having your car checked out by an independent shop. These EA839 motors can be noisy from the factory, as is all direct injection motors from Audi/VW.

@@KOSedheDJADH If they want to check if the car was flashed, they can see it easily. Tho, it doesn't just pop up when you scan the car. But if they decide to check it specifically, they can see the number of times the car was flashed. Not sure about the date/time info. The knocking could be from the rocker arms.
