I was stationed at Miesau Army Depot near Kaiserslautern 1968 and 1969. My advice would be for you to learn the language. I was allowed to live off base, and I rented a room from a German family who spoke no English. However, I was able to take two semesters of college German in the evenings at nearby Ramstein Air Force Base. When I came home at night they would help me with my homework. It made my experience there so much better. I was also fortunate to be able visit 14 different countries while I was there. Take advantage of this opportunity. If you don’t, when you are an old geezer like me, you’ll regret it. Best of luck.

I guess things have changed alot in the past 40 years. Obviously the military was much larger back then with many large and small bases. We arrived at Reinmain AFB 21st replacement BN ( Not sure of the number but...) Within 3 days i was at my unit a small base on a hilltop over looking the Main river in a castletown. Most of the field training was done at Grafenwohr. ( It is what it is sure cold as hell in winter but that's the Army for you) I must say to the new guys going there don't be a barracks rat ( Stay on or near post) Get out and explore and make friends with the Germans learn the language the Army offers college courses at night very cheap. Also the military as AFRC ( Armed forces recreation center) Which offers inexpensive trips all around western Europe and has hotels near the German Alps in Garmisch which is very inexpensive for the troops. Take advantage of your time overseas.

50 years ago I was stationed in Budingen and Babenhausen, both kasernes now closed. Was supposed to go to Vietnam, but orders were changed at the last minute. I also spent my first day in Europe in Amsterdam. Enjoyed traveling both by train and POV. Did Graf twice a year...it sucked in all seasons.

Funny how he calls Nuremberg "small"... it's probably the biggest city around... Amberg and Vilseck are actually small 😁 at least he mentioned the WON and Resi... too bad he never got to know "Diva Palace" or the other good clubs from back in the days... To everybody else: If you will ever be in germany - travel as much as you can. Most of the cities and villages in Bavaria are beautiful and really, really old. (Schloss Neuschwanstein is tremendous) The nature is amazing and you can see a lot of history (also WWII if you're interested). And that is only one from 16 german states... There is a lot to see and explore ! And maybe you are also able to visit some other countries in europe. Austria, Czech, France, Switzerland and Italy are not even that far.... You guys are already missing too much due covid-19. So with only 1,5years left, you have a lot to see 😉 Have a good time and thank you for your service

To whoever finds this helpful may it bring you peace in your endeavors at this point you probably stumbled upon this video because u already signed and have ur duty station I’m just telling u right now the glorified image you have of Germany will be completely crushed by 2CR vilseck is small if you’re single and living in the Bs you’ll be sharing a very small room with another soldier ps the barracks have been there since the 40s so their falling apart op tempo is ridiculous holemfelds is absolutely terrible super cold winters hella hot summers that u wish were longer so u don’t get to train in the snow the closets form of civilization it’s not even that great pretty far from vilseck is Graf if u don’t have a car it’s a bitch to get around a 45 min drive especially if you’re a new soldier at this point you’ve probably realized u made a mistake just remember that ur paid in dollars and ur in Europe using euros so not mention ur being underpaid if you pay with ur debit card in Germany ur bank will charge u extra to covert ur dollars into euros so you’re already spending a tad bit more if life brought to you this place idk what u did in life to deserve it or what ur paying for but you’re ganna hate ur life until u ets in my personal opinion and probably one of the realest opinions if I do say so myself 2CR is one of the worst units in the ARMY period I’m out this bitch

Former soldier here ...Ludendorff Kaserne, Kornwestheim( north- Stuttgart) . Hey guys- be SURE and check out the Bad Canstadt saunas/ swimming pools...very very excellent with cold baths too. It is easily accessible via the S-bahn then use the Bad Canstadt tramline...it will drop you off right on the spot. Some days are mixed women and men...some days are women only...some days are men only. No swimsuit is worn in the sauna...you only have a towel to sit on! So be prepared for nudity! Of course in the pool area you wear a swimsuit. Use the cold bath also....it will really get your circulation going!

I would say that I am kind of used to cold in general, because I just overall love the cold seasons instead the hotter ones because with the cold you just layer up but if you are like me my body is shit at regulating temperature so I stay burning up even in the summer, So I guess what I am trying to say is that my internal body temperature is always hot.

When my son was stationed in vilseck he fell in love with this girl. They tried to marry there but because of this c19 pandemic were unable to do get appt in Frankfurt etc. because he had to be present and USArmy had him doing fieldwork. USArmy transferred him to Killeen Texas June 2022 and she came with him on her tourist visa to help him get settled here and also married in Houston Tx Harris County Courthouse. She was only here 10 days on her tourist VISA and is back in Bavaria. Well now Jan 2023 USArmy has deployed him to Poland. My question is how can I help them so she can get her greencard process started? Can the USArmy help them with processing her application for greencard? They want to be together. We don’t know where to start.
